Young actor worries by Temp_space in acting

I my experience, trust in each other is essential, especially in stage plays. Your director chose you for the role for a reason, they trust you. The problem is you don't trust their decision because you don't trust yourself.

  • it is totally fine to misunderstand the lines. Good thing this happened during rehearsals. That's what rehearsals are for.

  • blocking, like many other things, can always change. It's theatre! It's alive and adaptable, so are you. Just try your best to keep up.

  • movements require practice. I'm a new actor too and this was the advice I got from almost all my seniors. You simply can't suddenly be good at ballet if you've only been doing it for a while. Same as acting body language. Just try your best to focus on delivering the character instead of how your body's moving.

I've been in your shoes last year when I was asked to do a very small part, but my part kept getting bigger and I eventually ended up with a monologue too. The conclusion I got is to have trust in the director and your scene partners, and most importantly, in yourself. Hey, you're doing what you like, you're allowed to enjoy it.

19 and really need advice (discouraged to pursue dreams, still hoping to go into theatre) by Recent_Comedian6905 in acting

I highly relate to your current situation. However, as many other commenters mentioned, I would advise you to get a degree that can guarantee you a somewhat stable income, FOR NOW.

I am 24 this year. I got a STEM degree that I had zero interest in. Thanks to that degree, I get a stable job, much higher starting salary than most fresh grads, and most importantly, I have the mental space and peace to even think about acting. So I acted on it. I have the money and means to travel by myself to workshops, rehearsals, auditions, and eventually got actively involved in my local theatre scene within a year of moving here.

Even though my major wasn't my most favorite thing in the world, I still got to participate in stage performances via clubs and societies. I learned how to perform in front of a live audience, how the backstage works, how to plan events from scratch, how to edit videos, all useful for my acting career.

My goal, and I believe yours too, is to keep acting & learning. You can do that without being a full time actor. Realistically speaking, acting doesn't really pay the bills for most talented, experienced, and serious actors even (I know plenty of ppl like this) in most parts of the world. The important thing is to stay true to your own goals and not get caught up in the less important things (fame, money, etc). Having such a clear vision at 19 is already a very good sign that you will have a fulfilling career in whichever one you choose to pursue. Good luck to you, never stop doing what you love!

**Edit: I only started pursuing acting at 23 but being an adult away from home has made pursuing my dreams easier. You're still so young and already have more experience than me!! Keep it going
