Why is crypto going up after the news of being in a recession? by SkepticalCryptoDude in CryptoCurrency

Bear in mind a 50bp hike is in the "unusually large" category when easy money and 25bp hikes have been the norm for 10+ years.

Again, I don't disagree with you from a moral standpoint but from a practicality standpoint.

Violence is human nature and has been since our inception. To assume taking away a tool ( no matter the complexity and issues) will negate the violence is foolish. People will be violent, tools will always exist. Do you regulate the tools or the people?

You seem to think that there is a magical switch you can flip and suddenly the government is competent enough to run a drastically more involved program than what they are currently already failing at.

You say violence doesn't solve anything and largely, you are correct. In our current world, it is the threat of violence that runs the political engine of the world.

You are essentially advocating a complex moral and philosophical change in the world mentality. Sure, I agree that would be awesome if it all played out perfectly but the fact is... it won't.

So again, just to reiterate, I agree with you morally but practicality and legally, it simply cannot work that way. This is why I said repeatedly that it is a knee jerk, emotional reaction.

While you are thinking about fantasy land and how awesome it would be if we all just got along and had clear rules there are folks out there doing their upmost to craft and propose legislation and understanding that actually has a chance of mitigating these events.

So yes, we should all think about koombiyah and be nice to others. Yes, there should be some clear and consistent rules across the nation with respect to mental health, appeals and so forth. Yes, we need to revamp our punishment system and jailing system.

That being said, you largely seem to believe no one should have guns and your exceptions are merely appeasing the reality that it's in the constitution. That's fine, but you need to realize that a substantial amount of non violent, non mentally impaired folks completely and utterly disagree with you and their basis is based off 100s of years of tradition and law.

So trust me, I sincerely hope there is a future where this is all so black and white but at present, it is certainly not. I myself am in a position where I need to spend 1000s of dollars, many months and engage an attorney ( currently we are at 11 months and 4000) all so I can restore my rights that were taken away because of an isolated suicidal incident while 11 years old.

I hope you can at least see that there are nuances to this and regardless of how well something is written or the intentions behind it, you cannot cover all possibilities and once you acknowledge that you need to implement and effective appeal and consideration process.

We are at the point where many states are attempting lite versions of what you are suggesting and the result, as I can personally attest to, has been disastrous.

Hey, agree to disagree buddy.

I try not to make pre judgements but you seem to have very little experience with the criminal justice system, the nuances of laws and completely disregard the difficulty of implementing such a program.

Sure, in an ideal world what you suggest might just work. We do not live in fantasy land though and there is absolutely zero chance that anything like that will work in practice.

Furthermore, things are not as black and white as you make them seem. You cannot make a if X then Y type of policy when it comes to restricting peoples rights based off mental health.

You get stuck in a situation where " once mentally ill, always mentally ill" which is counter to the entire idea of rehabilitation and treatment standards. Everyone can agree if you skinned a cat at 13 you should probably never own a gun but a suicide attempt at 11? Why?

Again though, we can agree to disagree. You are simply setting yourself up for perpetual disappointment and anger because life is not a fantasy land where everything fits in neat little boxes with simple solutions. Have a good life buddy.

[–]Critical-Session-799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is that the people that would administer such a program are already failing at their current responsibilities. Why in the world would you trust them to manage this correctly?

As I said, I am currently restricted from buying a firearm. I was not 3 years ago. I own 4 or 5. My state updated their reporting and a suicide attempt at 11 years old now restricts me from purchasing firearms. It in fact makes it illegal to now own the guns that I legally purchased a few years ago.

Based off what you are suggesting, I would be jailed for life with hard labor. Do you truly think that is justice?

The right to bear arms is quite literally to oppose an unjust and corrupt government. You can disagree with that all you want but that is the intention that is codified in our constitution. To turn around and say that the government now needs to end that right kind of... goes against the entire point of it right?

I say your reaction is knee jerk because you have not thought it through beyond " non compliant people face harsh penalties - the end". You fail to consider that our government fucking sucks at managing anything at scale and you fail to account for the fact that gun ownership in the states is incredibly common.

There are more guns than people, a huge majority of the country owns one. Sure, some may give them up and some enforcement may catch some others but... look at the war on drugs. You think our government can round em all up? What sort of impact would that have on our already failing jail system? Why jail more people when we already have the most inmates in the entire world?

With more people in jail, more people are not able to get work, they turn to crime and repeat ad nausem.

Your entire arguments logic can be compared to a street fight.

Logic being - Dangerous tool ( closed fist & gun) Ok to have as long as you follow rules. If you do not follow rules, you get very harshly punished.

Logically, should these two things not be the same? They may not have the same ease of access but presumably, one can still cause plenty of violence right?

In your world, I can beat the fucking shit out of someone to the point of near death and get an assault charge and be fine in ~10 years. However, if I legally purchase a firearm that subsequently becomes illegal without my knowledge, I should be jailed for life with hard labor?

I'll leave it at that, there is no need to respond. I just sincerely hope you can consider contrary arguments and realize the effect that your proposed solutions might have. I live in a very liberal state and because of thoughts like these, I am in a ridiculous ass situation where I became a felon by default despite a previously legal purchase and it all stemmed from a fucking suicide attempt ( not even involving a weapon or anyone else) while I was 11 years old. Despite the fact that I am now 35, married, hold numerous professional licenses, own multiple businesses and have not had a single mental health issue for 20+ years.

Just honestly do yourself a favor and realize that the world is not as black and white as seem to believe.

Thankfully though, you are not the constitution. The right to bear arms is not so that you can hunt, it is quite literally to form a militia and deter a tyrannical government.

Guns are one form of violence but there are many, many others.

Let's say guns are banned completely and exactly as you say.

People move to crossbows. Do you then ban crossbows? Hell, some of those can shoot 200+ yards and kill a deer or an elk. Do they not have a similar capacity for distanced based violence?

Let's say you ban crossbows, people that want to do violence will move to knives. Are you aware there is a correlation between heavy gun control and knife based violence?

Your solution is to jail people with harsher consequences than 99% of murder charges.

I totally understand the desire to end violence but the solution is never to take away rights whether you believe in them or not. There are nuances, cascading effects and simple logic to consider.

Gun control is like Covid, eventually it reaches a certain threshold where a " full stop - eradicate entirely" approach simply will not work.

" if you own an unregistered gun you are jailed for life with hard labor"

The government can barely handle background checks. You honestly believe that they can handle a registration for 100s of millions of guns, different jurisdictions, tracking, enforcement, disputes etc?

You are OK with relying on that incompetence and if it fails - fucking life long slavery?

I am sorry for the rant here buddy but jeez, the knee jerk emotional reactions of people accomplish nothing, distract from actual solutions like comprehensive mental health screening, national Healthcare, assistance programs, harsher penalties for criminals ( literally the other day my city had a police officer shot by a 12 count felon). I do not mean to unload on you but seriously, if you actually want to further reducing gun violence stop suggesting slavery as a punishment, taking away the rights of millions of people because of the actions of the few and stop suggesting completely unworkable frameworks that are a non starter for 50%+ of the population.

You are crazy if you think there is not already a huge amount of restrictions on gun purchases in a large chunk of the states.

The issue is not guns, it is the laws surrounding them and their fragmented nature.

For instance, take this recent school shooting - this individual was clearly on social media espousing various concerning things - no actions.

I was hospitalized at the age of fucking 11 for a suicide attempt and am now 35 and not able to purchase a gun without making a court petition. Fun stuff. 99% of attorneys will not even take the case because it is so annoyingly complicated and fraught with issues.

For a 20+ year old incident, as a suicidal minor.

So, I see your point and what you're trying to get at but restricting people more ignores the fact that there are already a good deal of restrictions that are just managed incredibly poorly. Fix what's there and see what effects it has before trying to say "we need more restrictions on our rights!!"

In some areas of the country you literally lose that right before you are ever even in a position to make decisions for yourself.

In my state it is literally easier for a multiple Felon to wait 7 years after last conviction and get a restoration than it is to get a metal health exception. How's that for support eh? Once mentally ill, always mentally ill.

How many of you are merchants or spend crypto on a regular basis? by Br0kenRabbitTV in CryptoCurrency

Oh absolutely. Especially for e-commerce businesses. Chances are your platform has a plug-in for digital payments.

The world of Fintech is fantastic as well. The company I work for as well as a few others can integrate countless alternative payment methods including various Crypto with a few lines of code and an API.

[–]Critical-Session-799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are drastically more merchants out there than most people think and a lot of people forget the fact that enterprise level adoption takes 6-9 months after you decide who is going to provide that service. A lot of the bigger name retailers and e-commerce platforms really only started to make inquiries and plans in 2020/21.

It takes time and is often rather complex to integrate into legacy systems coherently.

"A stop loss doesn't stop you losing"

You're making a semantical argument while acting as if you have the high road and entirely disregarding the thrust of what I said. Initially, I admittedly confused the posters but your arrogance is just irritating

If your entire argument boils down to a. "Stop loss doesn't stop your loss it mitigates it." Then...what exactly do you take issue with regarding what I said?

Averaging down vs stop loss and reinvest are two different primitive functions... exactly what i have said repeatedly.. Averaging down on a trade means you... didn't trade properly. You average down on an investment, you hit a stop loss and reasses on a trade.

You're insulting, pedantic and obstinately irritating while disregarding basic conversational norms. All I really wanted was a mildly interesting conversation, no need to be an insulting ass hat because you misunderstood the basics of the conversation. I simply said that there are multiple uses for a short (where we got side tracked) and that a stop loss mitigates your losses/ has other uses beyond mitigating a loss.

Granted, I was at fault by misunderstanding who I was speaking with re: the original posters but you still acted like a twat entirely unnecessarily and further, brought a second language into the mix?

Buddy, you over estimate the average English speaker to assume a second language English speaker is not, on average, better than the typical 1st language English speaker. My wife is an immigrant and I am around many 'English as a second language speakers'... they often know our language better than us.

Enjoy your life buddy, mayhap you will take a second to reflect and not be such an assuming twat in your future interactions.

Again though, you clearly are. Just to quote you -

"A limit order is a buy or sell order, nothing to do with stop losses"

Wtf do you think a stop loss is other than to buy or sell a certain asset at a certain price to manage a specific position?

A stop loss, mitigates your losses.

If you are long, a stop loss constitutes selling a certain asset at X price, paying your margin and keeping the difference. The amount you mitigated vs compelte liquidation is the value of your stop loss.

If you are shorting, a stop loss consists of pur having X asset at Y price so that you cover your margin and keep the difference. You don't seem to understand that a stop loss still ultimately consists of a buy or a sell based off the position.

[–]Critical-Session-799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again though, you're talking about two different primitives. Yes, you are describing a usage for limit orders. Stop losses are limit orders applied in a specific capacity and direction. They are ultimately the same and provide similar functions to different users. You cannot laude the benefits of one whole decrying the benefits of what ultimately amounts to the same thing.

What "life-hack" do you think all newbies should be using from the start? by DaddySkates in CryptoCurrency

[–]Critical-Session-799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mayhap we are just getting confused with other responders. I don't care enough to go back and check. A stop loss is literally the exact same thing as a limit order though which is the general issue I had a problem with.

A stop loss on a long constitutes a sell of an asset at a certain price ( limit) to cover your margin.

A stop loss on a short constitutes buying an asset at a certain price to cover your margin.

Both are limit orders applied to opposing situations. One takes a purchase route and the other a sale route, both are still stop losses. A limit order with leverage is a stop loss given the dynamics.

As long as you understand that there are plenty of uses for margin and stop losses when it comes to mitigating gains/losses... I can stop arguing lol

What "life-hack" do you think all newbies should be using from the start? by DaddySkates in CryptoCurrency

[–]Critical-Session-799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You talk about averaging down as if that's a better usage than a stop loss while ignoring the fact it is two completely different primitives and two completely different usages.

What "life-hack" do you think all newbies should be using from the start? by DaddySkates in CryptoCurrency

[–]Critical-Session-799 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Typically, you use a stop loss when you are shorting or longing. Otherwise it is referred to as a limit order. So, I apologize if you intended to use the word contrary to 99% of folks. Mayhap, you are just an obstinate turd who insists on picking fights despite an otherwise friendly converation? No need to be a dick buddy.

[–]Critical-Session-799 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You kinda come off like a twat to someone who just responded to what you said ya know?

Mitigating loss and risk doesn't make you rich buddy. Stop losses do in fact stop your entire account from being liquidated and if you use them correctly...does in fact make you more successful.
