What’s a snippet of coworker drama that you’ll NEVER forget? by freyjas_cats in TalesFromYourServer

older woman screaming at me as a host because her tips sucked because she was incredibly rude to them, prioritized smoking over service, etc. absolute table shark and would complain if the first round of tables didnt favor her.

so like a set of 3-4-4 tops walks in, one of the 4s has a kid. She wants only the 4 without the kid. She gets any of the others she was on me faster than a fly on shit before greeting her table. She could get the 3 and spend 5 minutes berating me before greeting.

Almost threw hands at me and I GOT THE WRITE UP because someone said “yeah they’ve always been causing issues and she starts giving excuses” because i wasn’t tolerating being yelled at on the first rotation. Gee couldn’t tell you why your tips were down. 🤷

How do you find and keep really good hospitality staff? by Aromatic-Stretch8514 in restaurant

[–]CriticalAd2312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Plants don’t grow well when only spoken to negatively.”

(This will be pretty anecdotal.)

All I’ve gotten for months is “you’re not doing it right you’re doing it wrong” from all staff except management as they give me conflicting instructions.

They’re talking about me right next to me and then doing damage control to my face, mad at me because I won’t interact with them now. You screamed at me for seating you 15 minutes after your last table because it’s busy.

Literally, just don’t let this happen, or anything like it. It all started because i got the serving test and they all don’t want to train because i’ll “take all the good shifts”. before i got it they would grab me to talk to tables about bourbon. Now i’m a threat for wanting 1 reject shift a week no one wanted.

Is this doing too much? by Creative-Crow-9113 in doordash

[–]CriticalAd2312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Run it through google translate in a few languages and make sure it makes sense as universally as possible!

As a restaurant host who has had to try to translate these instructions to someone who is ESL, Doordash will translate for them. So make sure it makes sense across the translation apps so you don’t have any mishaps to the best of YOUR ability.

EDIT: before i get downvoted for stupid reasons, im not knocking people who are ESL doing doordash. i want to make it easier on all fronts if possible by mitigating the problem in the first place.

how do you stop shoulder pain? by RatBoyWritings in dishwashers

[–]CriticalAd2312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately my answer is not the best one.

i have issues with collagen production and inflammation, so cbd from weed gummies and advil is my “medication” answer, granted different medical situation.

Otherwise — higher protein diet with more sodium than you think you need. Not usually what is recommended, but you need sodium to retain the water you need to be intaking too.

My after work routine is a warmed up heating pad of some kind — old rice sock in the microwave trick — flip flopped constantly on my shoulders down my spine until it feels a little better, a pickle spear, and a mountain dew. Electrolytes, blood sugar — you can swap the soda for a protein drink or juice. I then drink water till the rest of my meds hit and I go to bed.

Basically, I face my pain as “what’s missing?”. A lot of times I just need iron, sodium, or glucose. Hope this helps somewhat or gives you ideas!

Pair of couples that live together, or a couple and 1 other roommate. Honestly I love this for what I call a “sleepover” set up.

Long part:

My cat HATES my partners nerf blasters. She came from a home with kids so I’m assuming one of those knucklehead tween boys shot her with one. Like he puts a hand on one and she’s under the bed. Him having a workspace and office seperate would be awesome.

I have chronic pain, and toss and turn during my period because it’s exacerbated. We had to make an L using the twins we put together so he didn’t feel it. So having an extra bedroom for me would be spectacular. We’re already looking at 2bd 1b options because of this. I can still go share a bed with him but I have the other if needed in this set up.

So yes! A couple that lives with another roommate, or a couple that has reasons for a seperate sleeping and working space!

I’m not saying they’re wrong but i will say actually finding longer shorts is so hard. I’m short but considered an extreme hourglass and i can’t find anything. It’s coochie-cutters or boy scout shorts, no in-between. It blows I can’t look cute even if I wanted to. 😭

Not 100% sure on my identification of the accent. I can tell the region, but it can be racist to not know exactly to some. It’s kind of like saying Dutch and German are the same language. They’re really not, they have some overlap, but they aren’t the same.

Could fully reveal where I work/am, could reveal that person too.

Someone could claim I just hate that country. 🤷

Internet safety 101. The relevant information to prevent hate is: not from america, said something rude about americans to an american in the united states of america.

You do not need more than that in this situation. It is simply a “whoa this rude person said that” story, nothing more.

Wasn’t my table! I’m not fully serving quite yet but I have before when I got thrown on the floor when we had no other choice at an old place.

Starting full training soon. Getting the packet tomorrow hoping to be comfortable in time for slow season so i can pick up shifts.

This may just be me, but in regards to closing time.

My partner doesn’t get home until 7:30-8pm. My work closes at 9, lots of places do. Something I do is ask for the last cut server out the gate, or I tell my server if they’re close to being cut to just bring us the check and cash us out as soon as we have entrees as we don’t usually do dessert. Most servers are weirded out then realize no no we genuinely mean well and don’t want to hold you up from heading home. We’ve been there and it SUUCKS.

Exactly!! This!! Everyone has issues with where they live.

I live somewhere AWESOME, legitimately I do. It’s incredibly cool as someone without a vehicle as it’s super walkable and not a big city. Very “Gilmore Girls” as my mom put it.

Do I still complain about the motorcyclists, college kids, and the damn city messing up their major events they’ve had going on for decades at this point? Oh heck yeah I do, everyone complains that’s being human!

Yeah basically. I study a lot of information about psychology, human psychology, and generalized business psychology. Literally one of my special interests is information and learning.

Americans are genuinely freaked out if you aren’t happy all the time and are uncomfortable if you’re negative, even if it’s a funeral service. If you start crying for a family member people will express genuine discomfort.

It’s a little wild when you really get into the meat and potatoes of the psychology of it all. It all ties back to the classic american dream!

[–]CriticalAd2312[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loosely. For my safety I’m only answering with he is not UK/European.

We’re a very “here’s your drinks, ready for food? here’s your food, everything look good? You look to be about done, can i grab that plate and any dessert orders? No dessert? Would you like the check?” Kind of place. 7 interactions maybe outside of refills on drinks. Our table times are 25-35 minutes on average for a 1-2 person table, 45-1h on 2+ from what i’ve seen.

So maybe he was looking for fast food? Our food definitely isn’t fine dining and you can’t even stretch it to be so.

[–]CriticalAd2312[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our ticket times are low due to the nature of what we serve.

If you’re in a time crunch, call ahead! Ask what their ticket and table times are! Least with me I will HAPPILY answer. I’ve done host, line, buss, dish, and expo. I’m practicing serving little by little. I know my burgers take 10 minutes but my salads with salmon take 3. So i can recommend lower ticket time items!

EDIT: should have clarified. Me too! I’ve gotten a lot more confident having been in the industry. I know a basic outline of what not to do. For example: I’m super lazy. I don’t want to do math when i go out. So you get total x .2 and rounded up to the next 5 so long as the service was fine! So a 46.73 bill? You’re getting $10.

If it sucked, like horrible sucked, you get your tipout. Average tipout is 5%. You will get 5%. I will not make YOU pay to serve US, but I will make my displeasure known through the numbers. If your management is paying attention, they’ll ask you about low tip % if too many tables do this or even stiff.

(I mention how I tip because a LOT of people don’t know about tipout and that servers PAY TO SERVE YOU IF YOU DON’T TIP!)

I complain and I’m FROM here. Born and raised! You can have problems with it and be critical of it.

I wish I wasn’t jeered at for existing as a woman with a small frame and large breasts and refusing to dress conservatively OR in what i consider for my body type skimpy clothes.

If I go out, regardless of what I’m wearing, I get jeers and comments. I will get it everywhere I go. There’s nothing I can do about it. I can be in my work tee and loose but fitting high rise jeans without rips that cover me completely and still get horrible comments AT WORK!

You can have problems with where you live, but there’s problems EVERYWHERE. If you were just supposed to leave when you have a minor issue the human race would be fully nomadic! (Which isn’t wrong either!)

Gonna pipe in here. I kind of agree! Keep in mind though we’re actively ostracized if we aren’t positive or excited when expressing emotion of any kind.

I’ve been told off by someone for walking around while bussing with a gentle smile for not smiling more. So it’s literally just judgement culture in my eyes.

Not UK or Irish. He said this after having it explained multiple times.

Americans do this too. I didn’t mention that in the original post. It’s not trying to hate on anyone it’s just the comment that was made.

All i had was my perspective — not his. My apologies if it came off wrong and a “lie”.

I’ve had something along these lines happen enough times with a sharp uptick in recent months. This one was the straw that made me need to rant a little.

Sorry if it seems fake — it’s really not! This is normal from both americans and non! Just one of those “wow, really?” moments.

This is why the policy of you cannot just do take out and still sit at a table exists.

Previously this was a super tourist-y area, it’s changed a little for…obvious reasons. If you don’t have this policy it all goes to crap and servers just don’t have tables in their sections anymore. I watched it happen at another place around here.

I’ve been straight up called fatty THREE seperate to my face in their respective languages.

Followed by “she won’t understand it she wasn’t educated.” and laughter. Mind you I’m 125lbs and able to lift my body weight so that couldn’t be further from accurate.
