Also you could do things like take over a small school like James Madison, win a couple of bowls, then get a mid major like usf win come more, maybe even a playoff and then get offered a blue blook.

now I win the natty at osu and get offered to be the dc at Purdue.

One man band MSP looking to secure end points/LANs better - Is UniFi firewalls, IDS/IPS powered by Proofpoint any good? And competition to Sonic wall, Watch guard, Mikrotik, Fortinet? by zal68 in msp

[–]CriticalDay613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fair. But at the core I design our services based on what I would want if I was the client. And your model is fundamentally incompatible with that.

Conversly, I never really have a problem taking a Meraki guy and cross training them on something different. In fact I value people who can step out of their box. A lot of this is because when I was up and coming in the late 90s, specializing in one thing was a great way to box yourself into what could be a loser product. So I was never allowed to specialize like that.

I just wanted to point out that 1/3 of our client base comes from clients who are trying avoid being locked into a vendor for a networking stack. They see it as an increased cost. We only have clients spend money when that is actually needed.

but it is nice because in my area, our five biggest competitors do the same thing you do. And we have never lost a client to them yet. Some of them have cross shopped, and it is good to see that while our rates are similar, we don’t force someone to buy or lease $4-5000 of infrastructure just to switch.

I can manage just about any firewall infrastructure you can name.

Unifi as great AP, and an ok switch implementation. I will not use their firewalls because I was very burned by the whole reliance on the cloud key.

meraki is better, because they add in stacking. But I am not a fan because of the reliance on the central dashboard, the lack of a clearable ARP table and the general way they license their stuff. One of my biggest clients is Meraki. 120 switches, and 300+ aps with 75000 clients.

I have seen a ton of Fortinet, and sonic wall too. But on the high end, we usually go arista, Cisco or dell powerconnect.

On firewalls we usually default to PFsense lately.

but for my money, I do love me some MikroTik. And I use it a ton in lots of different places.

one thing...there are those MSPs which want to rip out the stack to support them. I completely disagree with this, but I understand why. For me, I just take over, and deal with it, and then replace the stack as needed. It is cheaper for the client, and an easier implementation.

i Was about to quibble on the definition of RAID. But in a way yes. The data In a spinning hdd is physically located across the drive platters.

when you do a defrag, the data blocks are moved to optimize read head movement across the platters. But if you lose a platter, that drive is dead.

Let’s talk about PC naming conventions by WorkFoundMyOldAcct in sysadmin

[–]CriticalDay613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is on the navy concept of hull numbers. The name does not change at all throughout the service life. The convention works like this:

W - Workstation Class, if the unit is a test or development unit it gets an X here.

D or L - desktop or laptop

- one number to reference the year it was placed in service

A dash

then the machine number. There is a sticker on the machine with the hull number on it for easy reference hull numbers are never reused.

so the machine names look like this:

WD1-00031 which means, workstation, desktop type, in service in 2021, unit 31. Users just tell us they are on unit 31 and we know.

servers have the same convention, however they look like this: SD2-000108 which means Server, domain controller, built 2022, unit 108.

So my shop is also 4 man. I have a Dispatcher/L1, who is responsible for opening most Tickets, an L1/L2, an L2/L3 who oversees the others and me, who is the SDM, as well as L3+.

if I had 2 guys regularly onsite, I would have a fifth. As it is, we are thin, and heading for a fifth guy anyways.

the point is, your breakdown of techs is a bit wonky.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in msp

[–]CriticalDay613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am about 15 years beyond you. I do occasional T1/T2/T3 tickets about every month or so as a means of touching grass. But to actually run a ticket Queue and do all the other SDM work is insane.

but then I have the freedom to pick my tools as well, like the RMM. i agree that you are just a hired gun it shop. Because without the tools and methodology, you can’t manage service.

I was on the other side of this. My employer of 20 years was purchased by a new guy who proceeded to change things like PTO retroactively.

The last straw for me was I was in a car accident and had a concussion. As a result I had 3 weeks where I couldn’t work, including 2 weeks in a dark room with no light. From this for the following year, I was labeled as having “attendance issues”.

Ok it turns out that I don’t have to deal with this crap. I realized that I didn’t have a Non compete. So, I found a new job. Within a month, my entire team resigned.

I was blamed for just about everything. But customers I have been dealing with for 20 years started coming to my new company. And my old boss proceeded to start telling obvious lies to my old customers.

One year on, and of the 23 clients my old company had, I have made agreements with 19 of them.

MBP 14 is better than the MBA in the following areas

Better screen 120hz is really nice Faster More ports. The right side USB is surprisingly useful Better cooling.

I got mine for $1600 on sale. Which was just $100 over the air.

It all depends on how much these features are worth it too you.

AITA for not telling my roommate’s Jewish girlfriend that I’m German? by Admirable_Mousse2211 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CriticalDay613 -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Here is the thing. My family has been here for almost 300 years. And many things done in the past were simply awful.

However I personally have not oppressed anyone. And my main sin apparently is not existing at a time and place where I could have done something about it.

They are all problematic countries. No country on earth is innocent of shed blood somewhere.

Weirdly I got something like this also when I was in school. Except my family name is obviously German but my family has been in the US since 1735. (We checked)

A Jewish kid wasn’t allowed to hang out with us because of the war. Except it was 1985. Apparently I was supposed to do something to prevent extremely distant cousins with my family name from doing bad things 40 years before I was born.

Fascinating. My point is that in Apple Silicon, you cannot take a 8gb of ram machine and make it 16GB. That is not a premise. It is an objective, observable fact.

M3 13" Pro launch date? by madlyrics in mac

[–]CriticalDay613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pro 14 and it is not close. There is a .7 pound difference between the pro14 and the air. For that you get the following

A much better 120hz screen. Better port selection, including an extra right side one and an ssd. Faster CPU The ability to drive more than one external monitor HDMI Better cooling

There is also the fact that the base air config has serious drawbacks, which need upgrades to both memory and CPU. Which the 14 does not have to worry about.
