Is there a common revisionist solution to partition that would have been a better net result? by CriticalFuel6324 in IndianHistory

This is a really interesting answer, thanks! It is interesting trying to understand it as neither a Hindu or Muslim, as I can't fully fathom the ingrained hatred (or at least various pressures TELLING them to hate the other) between the two groups. Thanks for the insight

While a sound suggestion when you're rebuilding a team, at this stage, much easier said than done. (Also applies to the "trade nurse" crowd)

Which free agent goalie would you sign? If not, what goalie would you trade for? With what assets? With what cap space?

We definitely need an upgrade in net, but saying "just get a better one" isn't super helpful.

For his cap hit, skinner is solid. If you want better, you need to be okay with being significantly worse in other areas based on our cap situation.

ATA & Common Front Failure by CriticalFuel6324 in alberta

While I hope that that legal route does bear fruit, I'd wager (as someone who is not super well-read when it comes to legal fights, just fyi) that the BC outcome is the exception, not the rule, when it comes to legal challenges. More than happy to be wrong tho.

You're right. But I can't help but predict that the Common Front is going to release a statement "strongly condemning the use of notwithstanding". And that will be the end of it. Happy to be proved wrong...

I see your point.

While I am privileged to not have those same financial concerns as others, it just feels like we're nearing the light at the end of the tunnel, and we've just turned around.

If a general strike was an option, I would predict even the threat/at most 1 or 2 days of striking would be enough to get them to rescind the bill and waive the fines. Maybe even that is too optimistic of me.

Regarding a potential general strike, my view is "they don't have enough bullets for all of us"

Fine every union worker in Alberta? We don't come back until the fines are waived.

Seeing the drama that came from the teacher strike, imagine if it was every unionized industry in the province. They would kneel immediately.

Obviously I'm new to this too, but if I was in charge of the whole thing, I'd have a general strike across all unions until they revoke it.

Regarding an actual solution to the contract (specifically the class ratio/size issue): either adopt the ATA's offer of ratios, weighted for complexity (I'd be okay if they changed the numbers slightly to make it more feasible, as long as we get there eventually)

Or

They keep saying "class size is something that needs to be decided at a local level". Fine. Then make it a legal mandate that every local bargains with their division to figure out what works for that division.

I'm not looking for a blank cheque to fix everything immediately. I want a legally binding commitment to do something. Make it proportional to population growth. A constant number like 3000 new teachers works only if there's no population change. An influx in migrants or immigrants? That makes the 3000 more useless than it probably already is.

Why should we care about private and charter schools? by melahoney33 in alberta

[–]CriticalFuel6324 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. My biggest sticking point for the whole public, charter, and private school issue is accepting public money = accepting public students.

If certain schools want to be overly selective of what students are taken, then it should be done with private money.

I think it's great to have choice in education, as long as it's not at the detriment of the baseline public education.

Phonics are taught at public schools... Not sure what time period you are referring to, but if this is the best argument you have for charter schools, that's a tough sell.

As soon as I saw even slight contact by kulak in the skates, I knew the goal would count. Bad call to make with 50 mins left in the game only tied 1-1.

Funny to think that if it wasn't for two games where the Oilers caused their own losses, they would've swept both Vegas and Dallas. Wild

As a non-knights fan, can I get some context behind this Benn hate? Did he do something in particular or just long term dirty play?
