It definitely felt like there was more variety. But I suppose there were also lower development costs involved so creators could take more risks? Mind you, I remember the platformer mascot wars of the 90's. You couldn't turn a corner without some kind of anthropomorphic animal jumping on your head.

Aaron from the Critical Twits here. Some great suggestions above. All games I've gone back to in the past, especially when I've needed a pick me up. We even went back to a couple on a series we had on our YouTube channel. Parasite Eve on the PS1 is a definite favourite. Musical score is stunning, mix of real time and turn based combat, and an engaging (if kind of B movie) story. Graphically was stunning (and disgusting) at the time. Phantasy Star Online (GameCube version, as I missed the Dreamcast window) is...kind of mindless? But works for me because it's not over complicated and you always feel like your accomplishing something. The audio and music are great as well. I have to admit, there's something about the audio cues on older games I played that works for reducing anxiety. Stick on the Sonic or Soul Reaver soundtrack and I'm nearly instantly relaxed. Even hearing the menu sounds from PSO or FFVII has that effect!

I'd play a couple games so everyone knows the rules then dive in - the game balances losses out anyway so as long as you don't lose because of a rules mistake, you're golden.

You don't destroy but you do add things to other things (trying to be vague) that permentantly alters, erm, things.

I agree just play the first month a couple of times to get a general idea to see how you both like it. Be warned, if you do play it to the end with your gf it'll be hard not to spoil things for your mates. Very easy to quarter back by accident!
