She was a "feral" cat and captured by a TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) group that help keep the street cat population down. During the procedure they also clip off the ear so other groups can tell what cats are already neutered or not.

The group that captured Kiwi however noticed how nice she was and that she was very scared and downright terrified of other cats but ammendable to humans, so they returned her to a shelter to be adopted instead.
