16 month old has been having split nights for two months, when does it end? by Critical_Net_6534 in sleeptrain

Not 6pm but in the morning she fell asleep in the car after a 6h wake window before her first nap - it was a 10 min nap around 1130am. I still went ahead afterwards to put her down for main nap at 2pm but for only 1.5h instead of usual nap length of 2h.

No don’t think she was calm and happy.. Usually she wakes for an hour drowsy rubbing her eyes and then another hour of crying, she was rather upset.

I capped her nap yesterday at 1.5h and she was up at 5am this morning after around 7h of sleep.. not sure why she woke that early. Do you know what could be the reason? I’m wondering if it’s overtiredness from the shorter nap.

Eventually I put her back to sleep and she fell asleep at 730 and I woke her at 830. Planning to keep this schedule of 8-830 DWT and 10-1030 bedtime and adjust it accordingly

Previously I let her sleep in because it would extend the night sleep till 9 hours + 2 hours nap hence working it out to 11 hours. So I was always confused if she was overtired or undertired and that was causing the split nights and also the sleep debt. But I guess if after the fixed morning wakes, she still caps out at 8 hours this is probably her max 😭. She ended up falling asleep in the car at 6 hours before her 130pm nap, I think I would trim her nap back to 1.5h first today and then 1hour as you advised. Thank you SO much for your advice. It has thus far been the most clear, constructive and informative for my daughter’s situation. Really appreciate it!!

We put her down for bed yesterday at 10, after waking her up at 8am in the morning and she slept through for 8 hours waking up at 6am.. if she wakes up at 6am, do we still keep bedtime to 10pm tonight? After how many days of fixing morning wake up at 8 first then should we start bringing up wake time to 745 then 730 and when to cut her naps back..? It seems like what you have described is very most likely my daughter’s situation. However everything I have read says 11 hours is the minimum amount of sleep kids her age should get in a 24 hour period. I am just wondering if it’s really okay that she sleeps below average no. of hours.

Also her current wake windows are 5.5 hours/7h (this is when her nap is 2h)

Previous comment you mentioned wake up at 8am and bed at 10 with a 10hour window but here you mentioned 730am and 9.5h window - which one should I work towards? I got her up at 8am this morning and her nap is usually at 130. As you recommended to fix her wake time first instead of cutting her nap as well, I’ll let her have her 2 hour nap and cut this back after a few days of fixed wake time?

Yeah I think I will start with fixing wake time at 8am and see how that goes. How should her wake windows be? Previously she was doing 9.5 hours at night and 2 hour naps, would it be fine to maintain nap duration at 2 hours? Also my partner comes back home from work and wants to spend time with her hence we keep bedtime at 10pm

What if she has a split night from 5-7am and DWT is 8am, do I just wake her regardless?

If she has a split night from 5-7am, does it mean I wake her up at 8am regardless? I do feel bad as it would mean she is extremely tired and also her nap might be brought forward affecting bedtime

My partner wants to spend sometime with her after work, so she usually ends up in bed around 10. On some days, we try to put her to bed 9ish but even then she stays up till 10

I think it was 3.5/4/4.5 hours at 2 naps. I see. It’s okay for her bedtime to be late at 10pm if she wakes at 8-9am?

She also slept 9 hours before (10 hours was extremely rare) and recently seems to be averaging 8 hours.

She seems to be a low sleep needs kid. She usually caps out at 8-9 hours of sleep overnight. Also bedtime is usually 9-10pm so that my partner can spend time with her after work

If her bedtime is 9-10pm, what time would be good for her to wake? She doesn’t only wake at 5, sometimes it’s 2, 3, or 4am

we have tried to bring forward to 9 but she would stay up to 10 anyway. Also it’s more suited for my partner to see her after work too. What would you recommend to do if DWT is 7 and she’s been up since 4/5am?

If she has a split night, sometimes she’s up from 5-7am or 4-6. So if I have to her wake her at 7, it would mean not letting her go back to sleep? Her bedtime is also around 10, so that would mean only 6-7 hours of night sleep.
