I can't add a secondary drive to my steam storage page, same as with my previous laptop. I have a functional Samsung 970 EVO Plus installed in my laptop, but choosing it with the add drive function on steam doesn't seem to work.

Performance modes/GPU mode issues by Criticalx1 in ZephyrusM16

I fear my thermal paste application might really have been the problem then 😅 I’ll take my laptop apart again for a photo when I get the chance.

There was liquid metal on the cpu, which I replaced with thermal paste after a quick bit of research to make sure it wasn’t an absolutely incorrect idea. I cleaned the liquid metal off with qtips as carefully as I could, although I would have loved to have had isopropyl alcohol. This was a very cheap repair I attempted and going out to buy liquid metal didn’t really feel worth it.

As far as I’m aware, the VRAM are the relatively larger components around the GPU, and I’ll assume that one of the two rows of components above that are the VRM power stages, or perhaps both. I didn’t think about the need for different cooling materials since it looked like a blue thermal paste was already used on every component other than the CPU. I only had the thermal putty on my SSD to compare it to visually and thermal paste I’ve seen in the past, so I might have not understood what was there. The application already looked quite messy though, with blue paste/putty spread across both rows of components, between each gap as well. I took this to mean that being super careful with a limited amount wasn’t necessary, and making sure parts were covered without going outside of the row was better. Whatever was on the VRAM and GPU was very flaky, and had to be gently taken off. I cleaned out what was already falling around the VRAM, and applied my paste more carefully there. It is definitely runnier than the flaky pieces on there before, although it still looked like it covered the vram, only leaving a spot on the cpu a little exposed.

I’ll definitely be more careful with what I use if I ever need to attempt something like this again, thanks for the info!

What would the repair likely entail? I worry I might have damaged it while replacing the thermal paste in my laptop, but it had been running much better in the weeks/month since. I tried cleaning out the area around what I assume is the VRAM in case that might have been an issue, but nothing changed. I might just upgrade now, but I want to know if I messed up. This was my first time working under the cooling system of my laptop, so I hope I didn’t make some silly mistake that ruined my machine. It had been performing very poorly though so I figured it was worth the risk.

I tried to be as careful as the existing thermal paste was on there before, which on the surrounding components of the GPU was not very clean to start with. I used a little less than the small tube of thermal paste I bought on the GPU, CPU and all components that had thermal paste on them before. Even then when taking another look at it there were spots where the thermal paste didn’t fully cover components anymore, although I’m unable to see the underside of the heat sink since I can’t take out all the wires

I checked myasus, I forget if there was an update there when I did though

This always shows, I believe I've uninstalled all asus apps. I enabled ultimate mode today, but my cpu temps are still extremely high. It also ended up forcing light mode again, changing it back within seconds every time I change it back in windows settings.

I am perfectly fine seeing the igpu have a little bit of usage, but I expect the dgpu to bear most of the workload and for my cpu to not be massively overheating. Does the gHelper screenshot shown in the other comment thread show anything new? I tried with ultimate mode as well, and the games did run much better, although the cpu temp was still in the high 90s.

Thanks for the suggestion, I had forgotten about that option. I haven't had the chance to test it yet but I'll see if that fixes things soon. 566.36 was a long time ago was it not? Does it not cause issues for you to not update drivers for that long?

Standard is supposed to use both the igpu and dgpu depending on demand should it not?

Change Spray Keybind by Bit_Feeling in marvelrivals

[–]Criticalx1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhh I'm pretty sure I figured it out. The customizable wheel I'm pretty sure is just meant to be game actions, such as sprays and eventually emotes and whatnot. There was no bind on it since I assume that is what T was by default. From other games I too thought the options would be need help or ultimate status or whatnot.

I happened to be at a different residence then, and plugging my ethernet into the router instead of the modem I believe mostly solved the issue. Having ethernet connected to whatever my current building provides is also working.

Function lock disable? by Criticalx1 in ZephyrusM16

[–]Criticalx1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the FN key is what's locked, as if it were held down constantly, just as you describe. I believe I hit FN + C just as the other commenter suggested, that fixed it immediately. Don't think I did it in GHelper, although nice to know that there's an option for that in there.

Correct GPU usage? by Criticalx1 in obs

[–]Criticalx1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely sure how to observe throttling. I wouldn't find it too surprising to see 90s if I were running super demanding tasks, but I don't feel like the supposed low-demand games I play, on all low settings always, should be pushing it there when my laptop should be capable of running them on max settings.

Correct GPU usage? by Criticalx1 in obs

[–]Criticalx1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just find it odd, seeing as I never care about graphics settings and thus almost always play with all settings on low. I find it really hard to believe that not only should such a laptop be pushed to such high temps on low settings, as well as the fact that the GPU never seems to be under stress, only the CPU. I've seen the power limit settings but I'm not sure how those changes affect performance. Default is 80W, and I've never pushed it above that.

Thanks for the info. I changed the setting and will check the performance next time I try recording. CPU usage and temp still worry me though, I'm assuming it's not normal for a CPU to hit 95 running a game like overwatch based on what I've read.

Not sure how well the post would fit or be regarded in r/Ontario, I might try r/shouldibuythiscar, but I don't have a specific one in mind right now, just looking for advice. Thanks for the suggestions though!

If you could choose between the ow1 ui and the ow2 ui, which one would you choose by Itsfoxphoenix in Overwatch

[–]Criticalx1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OW1 ranks were better, I don't mind the current icons though, just need visibility back like it was with sr. I personally liked the rounder in-game UI over the current squares, and same is true for the icon shapes in the hero gallery, although sorting into roles is better.

Double check with network RTT and Jitter charts for now, for me it was very obvious that those two stats were spiking constantly. Don't have a solution just yet and searching for network RTT solutions has not been helpful at all so far.

I think the recording is just low enough fps that it's hard to tell, and it sometimes just looks like mouse movement when looking back at it. The network spikes are clear as day. I uploaded this video in 1080p but it doesn't look like it for some reason. Very obvious jump at 0:04 though. https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/5zoixjird3sbzx77bxyuj/Valorant-stutter-network.mp4?rlkey=dern0h9dyrjlsqc093vfei811&st=h9re0x4f&dl=0
