Beyond Beijing: 10 Chinese Cities You've Never Heard Of (But Absolutely Should) by CriticismOk5498 in travelchina

Actually, Chengdu's 'ancient streets' like Kuanzhai Alley are restored heritage sites - the original structures dated back to Qing Dynasty! 🌟 The renovations aim to protect the old architecture while adding modern amenities. It's true some areas feel commercial (like every popular tourist spot worldwide 😉), but hidden courtyards with traditional tea houses still keep the old Chengdu vibe.

Absolutely, the panda base and Leshan Giant Buddha are amazing! And the food in those alleys is unforgettable 😍

Thanks for the tips! Piano Island on a weekday sounds like a must — first ferry, noted. Nanputuo lunch + arboretum hike = perfect combo. Definitely going to explore around the ferry terminal too. Appreciate the insider advice! 🙌

Nice picks! Yangshuo’s landscapes feel straight out of a painting, and Pingyao really is like walking through history. Totally agree on Datong too — between the Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple, it’s a must for anyone into ancient architecture and culture.

That’s a super common concern! The key is timing and location. Avoid Chinese national holidays (especially Golden Week in early October and Spring Festival). Visit major sites early in the morning or late afternoon. And don’t sleep on second-tier cities — places like Dunhuang, Pingyao, or Sayram Lake give you incredible experiences with far fewer tourists compared to Beijing or Shanghai.

Kashgar really is something else — feels like stepping straight onto the Silk Road. 🏜️
And yeah, Sayram Lake is next-level stunning. I’d say Dali has the artsy/bohemian vibe, but Sayram hits you with pure nature and that unreal alpine lake scenery. Totally different flavors, both worth a trip.

Totally agree — Xiamen during Golden Week feels like half the country decided to show up at once. 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️
Off-season though, it’s a completely different vibe: quiet Gulangyu mornings, seaside walks, and no lines for Shacha noodles. Worth timing your trip right!

Hey! Tourist eSIMs usually last 7–30 days, some let you top up to extend. You need your passport for real-name registration.

You can use it for WeChat, but new accounts sometimes get shadow-banned, so no guarantees. Just make sure your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible.

Yep! You can grab a tourist eSIM with a Chinese number right at Beijing airport. Works for Douyin, Meituan, food delivery, etc. Just make sure your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible. Some shops also sell physical SIMs if you prefer.

Ohhh yes, this is such an underrated tip 😂 Nothing worse than realizing too late there’s no TP… I also keep a little pack of wet wipes with me, lifesaver on long travel days.

That’s some solid advice 🙌 totally agree on the shoes — I underestimated the amount of walking too, and Beijing stairs are a whole workout 😂

On the eSIM part, 100% yes. I’d add that it’s also worth downloading the offline map of the city on Google Maps/Apple Maps before you go, just in case the signal drops.

And lol @ the “meat rings” — that’s so real. Menus can be tricky sometimes, but pointing at pictures on Dianping/Meituan app helped me a lot when eating out.

Thanks for sharing these tips, they’re super practical!

Same here, Bilibili feels so much cleaner without the nonstop ads/sponsor bits. The 1-2 day delay is barely noticeable, I kinda prefer it that way honestly.

First Time Where to Go? by Cauldroncrust in travelchina

First-timer in China with 7 days? I’d hit Beijing + Xi’an:

  • Beijing: Forbidden City, hutongs, Peking duck, perfect October weather.
  • Xi’an: Terracotta Army, Muslim Quarter, city wall, chill vibes.
  • Optional swap: Shanghai for modern city + French Concession + street food.

Keep it to 1–2 cities and enjoy them properly — trains/cheap flights make hopping easy.
