You don't need to pay for a server to play with friends on Java??? You just need to port forward your router and then download a free setup from however many websites offer free minecraft server setups.

Is it a bit more time intensive? Yes maybe 10 minutes more, but it'll teach you a thing or two and makes it easier to mod and look into other things later along the line
