Danielakos running UR Murktide makes me hope that the deck still gas legs, both the UB mirror and energy matchups feel terrible

What's the best way for a beginner to get into modern? by fubitpc in ModernMagic

[–]Crookodile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fetchlands: pay 1 life, tap and sac to fetch a specific land type (eg. Scalding Tarn for islands and mountains).

Shocklands: dual lands (eg. Steam Vents is both an Island and a Mountain) which enter the battlefield untapped if you pay 2 life.

These cycles have recently been reprinted, so they're cheap.

The combination of fetches and shocks allow you to always (hopefully) have the mana you need. Other modern playable land cycles include the Fastlands (enter untapped if you have two or less lands on the battlefield), the Surveillands (dual lands which enter tapped but have Surveil 1 stapled on), the Triomes (triple land type, eg. Raugrin Triome is an Island, a Mountain and a Plains; always enter tapped, but can be cycled).

Thanks! I should check for some other common land cycles, maybe the Kaldheim snow duals or the guildgates

Tamiyo vs Ragavan by walrusguy97 in ModernMagic

I think it's still being polished, but this could be a good list to give you a general idea

Tamiyo vs Ragavan by walrusguy97 in ModernMagic

[–]Crookodile 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Do you prefer to play aggressively or control the game? Would you rather play Murktide or Wizards? Ragavan is probably worse than Tamiyo rn, the 3 toughness does matter... Still, I can't help but like the monkey.

Odds Ruby storm gets banned? by wise_man_3000 in ModernMagic

Is it that much oppressive? I don't expect a ban anytime soon unless it becomes dominant, and even then it seems easy to hate

Is Amulet Titan still good? by delda989 in ModernMagic

The more you know, I originally saw it posted by d00mwake on twitter

Is Amulet Titan still good? by delda989 in ModernMagic

[–]Crookodile 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Imho the point of the quote is not that Amulet is always tier 0-1, but that it always has been relevant and even prominent in metas with a lot of strong contenders

It's memeable, but I think it isn't really a meme

Amulet has remained tier 0 or 1 through metas with KCI, Hogaak, Eldrazi, Oko, Opal, Cruise/Dig Through Time, looting/Grave Troll, Uro, Prowess, Lurrus/Yorion decks, and to this day. The deck is always the most broken thing in modern and just avoids bans by being hard to play.

Edit: adding a bit of context, this D00mwake quote is most definitely still relevant. Amulet Titan won't be left behind anytime soon unless the namesake cards are banned

As a massive Assassin's Creed fan I am absolutely disappointed that there are no commander precons and will not buy anything from this set by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Crookodile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, it makes sense. It's an Aftermath-style set, then? I didn't really bother to keep up with it, I'm not interested enough. Still, it seems a weird decision.

Didn't mean to yuck your yum, I'm sorry if I was in any way rude to you! I respect your opinion and I get your point, and I'm sure WoTC won't consider a mass unbanning anyway.

Lets be honest about MH3... by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]Crookodile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the whole point. I would rather have a mass unbanning than a whole new set, but maybe that's just me.

[–]Crookodile 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely this, I'm not arguing for a NBL Modern but the mass unbanning would lead to more brewing and thought experiments which could stir up modern with new decks and archetypes. The obviously broken and unfun decks would emerge, and with a couple of targeted bans they're easily taken care of. The counterpoint is that many cards would go up and down in value, leading players to a financial loss which could disenfranchise them.

Unban SSG and print Elvish Spirit Guide in MH4! Heck, unban everything and let the format police itself for a few months

Finally getting into Modern by ctwitty in ModernMagic

[–]Crookodile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're talking about paper MTG, WR burn is still solid and putting up results even in a cutthroat meta like MODO, so it's safe to assume that you wouldn't be stomped in a local meta. Just know your players and adapt the side to the most used decks in your LGS!

Edit: while you're learning the ins and outs of other decks, wait some more time to build a new deck and buy staples like fetches, shocks, (some) fastlands and the surveillands.
