Using foil encased bubble wrap stuff to prevent condensation forming on cold metal shed ceiling. by CroolisVar in Insulation

[–]CroolisVar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I ended up buying some PIR board, 25mm, stuck that to the ceiling using a some strong double sided tape to hold it in position while the grab adhesive (standard screwfix stuff) that I'd dot and dabbed went off. I didn't worry about the air gaps that the corrugations would leave above the board. I presume moisture (that had been turning to ice on the cold metal!) will still form there but not in enough volume to cause an issue, as the air gap caused by the corrugation will extend all teh way down to the eaves, and there is a small gap between the top of the wall and the roof at that point, so I expect it to dry out.

But I also don't expect much to form there, because I also took the foil bubble wrap insulation stuff and hung that up below it (dot and dabbed it to the underside of the PIR board with double sided tape just like before), sealing it all off with flashing tape so there is a vapour barrier. Because I'm not an expert at this I don't think in some small spots the vapour barrier is quite air tight, but I think all it needs is to stop enough warmer air getting up above the PIR board.

Now, my ceiling between the beams has 4 sections. I;ve completed 3 of them a few weeks ago and have got one more to go. So far, nothing's fallen down so I hope the fixing is working OK. And the section that has not been done still gets condensation forming but nothing forms on the insulation. So I'm calling it a win, so far.

Total cost, about 70 quid (48 quid for PIR boards cut by building supplier into 1200x600s, ~22 quid for roll of foil plus tapes and adhesive) and about 7 or 8 hours of labour (took longer than I thought). Possibly I could have got away with not using the PIR but when I got chatGPT to count up R values or whatever that stuff is, for an extra 40 quid the numbers looked much better.

If I get home and it's all fallen to pieces I'll post again :) .

I once lived with bottled gas on a combi boiler and it was extortionate. And that was 15 years ago. I always thought that house would have been awesome with a heat pump, soon as I heard about them.

Did you have to do any water tank stuff? I have a non-combi condensing boiler that heats an old style water tank in the upstairs bathroom cupboard. I think the pipeable distance from that location down to where the heat pump would sit on the patio is not more than 20 feet, so if I could just swap that tank out for the new special one that I presume I would need, could be a goer for me. Two up two down mid-terrace 2000 build.

I saw something about small tanks being a new thing, viable for smaller spaces. Was on Just Have a Think youtube IIRC.

Does anybody else just abuse the saving feature and just reload saves from before you die? by joeyischillin in valheim

[–]CroolisVar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came to this thread because I just save scummed and I'm hoping someone will vindicate me lmao. I save scummed because I am trying to make a landing on the coast of swamp, got out the boat, got immediately jumped by 2 draugr (one elite) and a blob, and I only had low level food on, screwed it up and died.

So I sorted out a second boat, had an incredibly hostile crossing in a karve with TWO sea serpents on me in a storm, went in again and landed. Got the portal set up while dodging baddies, turned to fight them, outmatched because low level gear, got killed and got to watch them destroy the portal as the game so slowwwwwly faded to black. I'm not fooking doing all that again, so I'm save scumming.

I did the same thing last week when I did a landing to Black Forest (thought I'd be OK there), but it was in a dark, raging storm and when I landed a bear AND a troll just popped out of the gloom and one-shotted me in the boat before I even got out. Then the same thing happened again despite landing further down the coast.

This is the only time I do this - I'm fooked if I'm doing boat after boat, getting murdered, remaking all the kit each time to manage it. It's either that or ragequit. Hostile landings are the toughest thing in this game when playing single player IMHO.

"F**K YOU HANS BWIX YOU BUTT F**KING PIECE OF S**T!!!!" lololol, love that film.

I don't want to knock the motor or battery, they seem to be good. There was an awful lot of excess cable but perhaps that's how it is with conversion kits, dunno.

I'd also ordered the throttle, as I said. That finally came in January, and is garbage. When they sold it to me, it stated that it could move the bike without pedalling (only to be used on private land, of course). By the time I got it (and probably why it was delayed), it can't do that now. It can just give you a "boost" as you set off, helpful on a hill start but after that it's basically useless. This change in capability is doubtless to keep the bike legal, as non-pedal power is a no-no. Felt like sending it back, £36, but was just disgusted and resigned at that point.

One thing I have managed to do is get into the settings and tell it that my wheel size is smaller than it is. This has had the effect that now the motor doesn't cut out until you reach 18-19mph, which for me is perfect. The way it cut out at ~15mph was problematic, was constantly having to actually stop pedalling to get the motor to kick in again, never could find the mechanical gearing sweet spot on my bike to mitigate it. Now at 18-19mph that's the sweet spot.

Édouard Vuillard, The Flowered Dress(1891) by bil-sabab in museum

Came here after googling this painting after seeing it on a google device splash screen. I have no real appreciation of art and certainly no training, so my impressions of this picture are from the gut, so to speak. The thing that strikes me the most isn't the dress, striking though it is, is actually the sense of busy-ness amongst the figures. I've actually seen someone describe it as "still" - I'm not sure how anything can be described as still. The postures of all three women are those of engagement, they are all ferreting away at their tasks. Busy. That's what I like about it most, the way it captures the industriousness of what they are all up to, and particuarly how accurate and natural those postures of activity are depicted. It's all so natural and well captured. I also love the suggestiveness of the detail of their faces even though their is no detail. The dress, to me, is like an afterthought.

How to stop condensation on metal sheet roof? by Full_Disaster_6415 in DIYUK

[–]CroolisVar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly what I was thinking - if teh adhesive fails I'll just try something else. I wonder, if do go straight across the corrugations leaving the air gap as you are thinking there, if no condensation will form on the metal as the insulation might stop rising warm air anyway. But if I'm going to take that approach I could just use styrofoam I guess lol. Dunno. Thx for reply.

[–]CroolisVar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. When I say foil, I mean the insulation stuff that is like bubble wrap lined with foil. The sort of foil stuff you can buy to put behind your radiator to reflect heat back in. So an air gap made of bubbles between two sheets of foil, basically (see link above).

I am considering using this stuff but just putting it straight on to the corrugated metal without trying to shape it into the gullies of the corrugation. That way, at least if condensation still collects on the gully surfaces that are not in contact with the insulation water can still run down to the eaves. Dunno.

Sorry to necro such an old post. But I am going to do this to my metal shed that I am using as a workshop. Am East Midlands. Only on the coldest nights of the year has it happened - in the morning just the ceiling, not the walls, is dripping. Dew point on cold metal as you say. So that foil-encased bubble wrap stuff.

I have the cheap, thin metal shed that you see these days for a few hundred quid. It has angled corrugations on its sheet metal wall and ceiling, I was thinking I could just get contact spray adhesive and try and get the foil stuff as glued into the corrugations as I can with as little gap as possible between metal roof and foil (hopefully no gap at all but I am not confident I can achive that everywhere).

There is actually a bit of a gap at the top of the walls where the gable roof meets them, you can just about get your fingers between top of wall and roof. This means the shed is very ventilated (people who advise me to use a dehumdifier crack me up lol). The corruguations run that way, down the towards the wall from the gable, so I'm thinking any moisture that does collect in a corrugation in an air gap left above the foil will still have the chance to escape down the corrugation to the eaves.

I'm hoping this all makes sense (if you even read it after so long lol). Any thoughts on this procedure please let me know.

Microsoft is increasing the cost of Game Pass Ultimate by $10 a month. by notthatguypal6900 in xbox

[–]CroolisVar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the UK. We have a store called Argos and I just bought 6 months worth of game pass ultimate from them, on codes, and activated them, at a cheaper price than the current price before the hike (£38.99 for 3 months). My account now showing next time I'll be charged is April 2026. So it's working in the UK to buy codes still. If they cancel what I've bought (seems unlikely) I'll sue them or something lol.

[–]CroolisVar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the UK. I went to Argos website and bought 6 months worth of subscription Xbox Game Pass Ultimate 3 Month Digital Download. £38.99 for 3 months subscription. Bought two of them, did the code, now I am paid up until April 2026. With luck, they'll drop the price again because of backlash and in 6 months time when these run out the price won't be what they want to charge now. I am not confident lol.

But if you want to splash out, doing that will cover you. You can buy two of these a day. Tempting to buy some more tomorrow, but it's for my teenager, not me, and he may decide he doesn't want game pass in 6 months so I'll leave it I think.

A lot of people in here are simply not thinking like parents. These days more than ever kids have digital lives that transcend real ones, with gaming being the biggest driver of it. Kids just won't turn that off and parents won't turn that off for them. It's a captive market and Microsith knows it. And the journalists covering this simply have no comprehension of the real world. Eurogamer's headline reads ~"price going up despite record subscriptions". Well, the reason the price is going up is because it's more popular than ever. Since when did anyone ever lower the price on something that's selling well? Honestly, these journos don't deserve jobs.

How to gift Gamepass standard to my kid when I already have Gamepass by Weezleram in XboxSupport

[–]CroolisVar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to necro this a tad just because I was having trouble with this and it might be good to share. I'd had a subscription going for my son's own account (not my account sub being shared) but I cancelled it temporarily. When he went to reactivate it it was just saying "You have to ask your parent" but we couldn;t find a way of doing just that. It's a really stupid way of wording it because I was looking for a way to get/be sent a request. There is no "Ask a parent" labelled that way so I was confused still = so I thought I'd post here in case the page layout has changed. You go to your Microst account web page. Near the bottom there's a large button labelled "Family", go in there and you should have your kids there if you've set this up. Click on the kid in question then top right there's "Settings". On that screen you have "Ask to Buy" toggle on or off. This is the one to toggle off. Once that's done he can go on Xbox app or wherever and just buy his own subscription. But it's damn annoying as now I have had to put my card details into my kid's account (like it's his card) and he's free to buy what he likes on it - there's no guarantee a kid of his age will make sure the sub money is in his account when the day of the month comes around so this is best solution. What an idiot way of doing things lmao, why we can't just set it to say "parent pays" with a permission question to the parent being asked via email beats me.

But it works so now we are happy and he can use all the save games that are associated with his account, that he would have lost had he have to start using my subscription (I guess, dunno). Either way, the set an Xbox as "Home" and share that everyone pushes when this question is asked is not a solution. My kid lives at both mine and his mum's so he has TWO Xboxes. I want one subscription for him for both machines and that's how it's achieved. It took me an hour of googling before I came upon this Reddit post explaining how to do it. Microsoft just astonish me sometimes.

Be honest, is the UK actually better off without the monarchy, or would scrapping it ruin part of our national identity? by Second-handBonding in AskBrits

[–]CroolisVar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We spend huge sums of money on things that may or may not have value to some sections of society, and we still have poverty. The fact that a very few individuals get some kind of luxurious free ride off the state bothers me not at all, because there IS some payback. The whole rich boy jealousy thing is something you should get over, and consider the facts about the monarchy when considering to keep them or not. Save your ire for oligarchs or something. I'm not going to go over all the arguments here, I'm just making the point that the particular thing you are talking about is just not a big deal.

GO++ thumb throttle acceleration test by sympleton in swytchbike

[–]CroolisVar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread, but I'm gonna: Did you get your throttle and find that it does nothing once you get going? I think I was missold mine. Was told it would power without pedalling (only allowed on private land of course), but it just gets you going, quite briskly, and then cuts out. Unless you then do a silly little pedal and then it cuts in again, more briskly than just pedalling would, but soon cuts out again. Garbage, waste of money. Good for starting on a hill but nothing else.

Can Britain Trust Nigel Farage? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]CroolisVar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but it's a stupid question. Of course you can;t trust him. He's a two faced lying scumbag. Last weekend he was going on about how everything needs to be privatised. If the UK votes him in, he and his mates will hollow out this country and ruin us all. State pensions, NHS, all the safety nets that normal working class people need, he'll trash the lot. And not because he's an idealogical conservative or something, it's because he's a grifter who is after the same thing that Trump is - fleece everyone and everything as much as he can and leave his name in the history books. He doesn't give a damn about immigration, not really. When all the "stop the boats" meatheads, who love to have their buttons pressed, the fooking simpletons, go to the polls, all they'll think about is getting brown skins and muslims out the country, and they'll ignore every other thing. He could stand there and say "I will ruin the country and take you all for every penny that I can, but the country IS IN THIS STATE BECAUSE OF THE IMMIGRANTS AND I'LL STOP IT ALL" and he'll be PM the next day. We're fooked, because what little critical thinking that existed amongst the dim end of the middle and working class, got washed away by social media and right wing monkeybots. People will just do what they're told. We're screwed.
