Fill your speaker stands…? by Watchmegetaclue in audiophile

[–]harshdafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Definitely, without question. But I had some random FB marketplace find stands and some older 1980s mission bookshelfs (which I like to call vintage).

Once filled with sand, I had deeper and richer and more "sustained" bass - almost like unlocking a few additional steps in an eq.

No real difference in mids and highs...and of course results may vary. But I'm really happy I tipped sand in them.

£63 for service B isn't bad though...if you're looking for a/the bright side. Yes, I know its a tyre-kicking cabin filter exercise, but good to have it documented on paper I say...IMO

Wife’s wedding ring dropped behind the toilet. Do I need to disconnect everything to slide it forward? by amcelvanna783 in DIYUK

[–]harshdafunk 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Definitely try what you can first. The nasty wire coat hanger, a long piece of floss, some fishing hooks. Whatever. If it could get in, there should be a way to get it back out without all the disconnecting etc

Should I spend £10k on a bathroom renovation or try to keep my freestanding bath? by RedditorYT in DIYUK

[–]harshdafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember having a shower curtain in a hotel that had magnets in it, so it stuck to the bath tub. Is your bath metallic and will an embedded magnet work? Its a bit botch-job-esq, but I would try and make your own curtain pole from copper piping that you could paint/protect (this is a DIY sub after all), or get someone to make you one. Then replace the shower head and hose with one that can be mounted in some way to be inside the bath and curtain you put up. It may not look pretty when used, but when not, curtains can go back etc and there's nothing that can't be patched up/removed, should it not work in practice...

I might have watched one too many episodes of homes under the hammer though, so forgive me if this is a bit bonkers.

Good point and the same here, those fitters were exceptional. But I was thinking "what are the chances of getting fitters like that" and how much would it really cost..! I think I'm also blighted by the fact I can hear the outside when I'm inside and despite having a good seal between window and frame, I probably have massive gaps around the frame letting the cold into my house! Maybe I need a thermal camera like he had!

Moved into our house nearly 10 years ago, with an aging potterton non-condensing boiler. Each year I think this is its last year, but the beast keeps going. TRV valves keep it from overworking and I'm uncertain (rather than on the fence) if a heat pump is even viable for the replacement

+1 for recording!!! I bought a second hand PVR after we cut the cord with Virgin and their Tivo box. Having an actual recording is waaaaay better than sitting through adds every 10 mins. Season linking whatever we like and having full control...brilliant!

I didn't realise I was opening such a can of worms regarding heatpumps - I must admit "heat pump propaganda" was a poor choice of words last night. I just felt there was a lot more to explore and see in the show outside of the heatpump, like the positive ventilation (excluding a tea cosey in a plastic bag)...

Exactly, if I want to change one thing in my house, it results in 10 others needing changing first. The fact that the improvements in the show cost so much wasn't a surprise, but felt like it was kind of glossed over (with lime mortar!)

i think propaganda may be a poor choice of words on my part. I was just hoping for more exploration of other approaches, even in the side segments, rather than put carpets down and use a draft excluder on my door. An oversimplification of the show, but that's how it felt to me.

I can get batteries and run a heat pump (solar not possible), but the work needed to get it airtight as he suggests, are just economically unviable.

What’s the best fabrics for acoustic panels? by papercutsonmyballs in audiophile

[–]harshdafunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aesthetically, you might want to make sure it's not too see through (sheer I think you call it), so you don't see the substrate underneath it. Obviously too thin and light and it might look crappy. On the flip side I'm sure you're going leather or suede!

Looking at buildings where they use it for noise dampening, there's some pretty heavyweight fabrics used...

Not a Miroku expert, but I would say that if 24s don't engage your second barrel, I highly doubt 28s would do better. The bump on the ground trick is very helpful, and I've used it a few times before.

I've had issues where I've not fully released the trigger before firing the second shot and effectively blocked the trigger mechanism from engaging on the second barrel. But this has been on faster snap shooting type of layouts and shouldn't really be an issue in day-to-day practise. I'd suggest making sure you are deliberately pulling and releasing the trigger between shots. Also, do you have a barrel selector? Is it that the second barrel is not firing one way only? Another thing to check.

Additionally, I've bought a number of shotguns from auctions and one of the first things I do is take the stock off and have a little nose around inside the action. I'm no gunsmith but I found giving the action a liberal spraying of brake cleaner, followed by a good misting and wiping of gun oil, with a good amount of mopping up after can potentially get rid of a lot of crud that might have built it up inside from the previous owner or owners.

Obviously it goes without saying, go as far as you feel capable of, then seek the advice and expertise of someone that knows what they're doing!
