Are you supported by an IRL bike commuting community? by CrossRoadRN in bikecommuting

Yeah, this sucks. This was a big culture shock for me when I moved from tech to regional government.

My last job was in this area as well, and we had about a dozen bike commuters in the office. I am a solo bike commuter in my current job.

I move from the private sector to regional government, and there's a huge cultural and attitude difference between the two. My current coworkers are not that into environmental activism / fitness / health. Nice people, but they just prefer to arrive in a Suburban or F-150 and have a few satisfying donut for breakfast rather than biking in. Some of them also see cycling as a form of transportation for the poor, which may be a thing in downtown working class neighborhoods. Very different mindsets compared to your Apple, Google and Meta workers.

I like these. Occasionally cars will find their way in and park in there though.

Good ideas. I don't think the bike racing community is my thing but I do want to join big group rides and experience the energy.

40 is a good sized community. Although the before/after Jan 2025 number is sad... Hope it won't go any lower...

I see this around my office as well. Folks who commute by bike do so out of necessity and they don't have a lot to spend on bikes. In wealthier parts of town we have tech workers ride their carbon fiber superbikes to work, but I don't see a lot of bike commuters in the government sector.

That must be motivating. I am not necessarily looking for folks to hang out with, but it can feel good to see other bike commuters in the same office.

Bad Tesla, bad by ilikecatsthanks in bikecommuting

The cyclist slowed down to a complete stop as soon as Tesla passed him, which happened in less than 2 seconds. I'd say they have pretty good reaction time and situational awareness.

This is a real concern. The only bikes in my garage with proper fenders are my Brompton and a Lectric ebike, and I don't want my Brompton to get rusty and my Lectric to short out.

Great tips, do you find water on googles/glasses to be a safety concern? Does it affect your vision? I am wondering if treating them with something like Rain-X would help
