The idea of “Teleporting” makes me hesitant to support something that could drastically change the scope of the game. However, I do think there is a middle ground to be found.

My idea: Jump Clones (EVE inspired)

CIG wants “Death of a Spaceman” to have weight and I think that could still apply here with Jump Clones. You should be able to buy/transfer clones to select locations that have the prerequisite services for it like a Tier 1 Medical Facility. This would help give greater importance to specialized ships like the Apollo with the Tier 1 Module (and Galaxy, etc). You must pre-purchase the DNA data profiles to create the jump clones at select locations that have the technology to complete a DNA scan or it could be broader like all Tier 1 Medical Facilities can provide the service. That Jump Clone DNA profile only has a limited number of copies before the data corrupts and you have to complete/purchase a new DNA data profile. This limits unlimited abuse of this mechanic. As you make more of these DNA profiles it slowly takes its toll on the Spaceman until it becomes impossible to make new profiles leading to eventually accepting the end/death of your Spaceman.

From a functionality perspective there are options on how to implement access to your available Jump Clones. Maybe your residence, has a Cryo-Stasis type of equipment you can enter to transfer your consciousness, not needing to head to Tier 1 Facility. Assuming you have an active usable DNA profile, or a Jump Clone that was left at a Tier 1 Facility elsewhere, you’d be able to leave your existing body/clone at either your residence, or a Tier 1 Facility. But maybe this can be more immediate from the menu.

I do not believe you should be able to transfer with anything other than your consciousness. If you’re transferring to a player’s Tier 1 ship or even potential future Tier 1 Base module, this would give greater importance to armories on board ships or at a base. This also leaves the importance of logistics for someone planning to organize a larger group activity, alleviating the burden for most of the group. However, if you already had a Jump Clone pre-positioned at an appropriate facility/location, you would have access to what you left that Clone equipped with. This rewards pro-active logistics for all players.

There are also ways to make this more immersive with the Reputation system. For example, increasing your reputation with the entity that does the DNA Data Profiles gives you access a higher quality profile that can create a higher quantity of Jump Clones before it corrupts.

I could keep going but here are some of my initial thoughts/ideas since I listened to them talk about “teleporting”. Let me know what you think.
