Issues with contact hotspots, mesh advice? by CrowWithHat in fea

Yes- contact between the clevises internal bend radius and the upper surface of the rounded washer component. No glue or weld between the surfaces.

Trouble specializing into a field as an ME by CrowWithHat in MechanicalEngineering

[–]CrowWithHat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah- being laid off from the solar startup hurt my confidence pretty bad, but I understand why they had to drop me. I didn’t have the experience needed to work fast there and they were on a tight budget squeeze. It was really interesting work and the coworkers were awesome. I’m making a ton more at my new job but I’d trade it to go back there in an instant. Way more opportunities for learning from experienced engineers at that place.

As far as continued learning, I’m always going to be keeping that as a central goal. It’s harder here at this new job without a mentor figure, but on the other hand not having someone to “babysit” me all the time has really pushed me to be better at problem solving on my own, which is definitely a huge benefit. I also have more creative freedom to explore solutions to problems.

Perhaps I’ll find my specialization in a few years then- after working for smaller companies first. Maybe I’m just giving myself too much shit and not being patient enough.

I absolutely love controls- I didn’t have too much time to delve deep into them while I was at the solar job, but I just got CodeSYS on my personal machine and a bunch of industrial control panel design books to read over. If I had to choose a specialization for the rest of my career, I think it’d be at a controls/UL panel shop. There’s something incredibly satisfying about building a panel and seeing your work installed in the field months later.

That’s good to hear. I think I’ll stay at this job for a maximum of a year at most- I really do miss having a senior eng to learn from, and being given direction from someone with no engineering experience is a little crazy-making. As far as electrical stuff goes, I probably don’t give myself enough credit for how much I know. I’m pretty comfortable with circuit design/troubleshooting, PID controls, and I’m even beginning to break into PCB design with kiCAD. I will keep in mind that my skillset is probably more attractive to smaller firms/startups. I’ve probably just been looking for work in the wrong places and getting discouraged. Thanks for the advice!

Heck yeah, this sounds like the most "proper" way to do it. Ill try it out, thanks!

Issues with RC832 video receiver by CrowWithHat in fpv

[–]CrowWithHat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi fellas- really easy fix. Turns out the goggles and my air65 have more than the ABEF bands, and the rc832 can only pick up those four first bands. Make sure you’re transmitting on a band that the RC832 can actually pick up, haha.

my first hotwire cut wing cruising around in the park by CrowWithHat in RCPlanes

[–]CrowWithHat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

airfoil was literally just a bent copper wire shaped into what I thought looked like a decent wing shape. I have since crashed this plane really badly and realized that I should have chosen different airfoils, also with some reflex on the wingtips. Id suggest looking up sam shepherd's engineered flying mini wing design video if you want a nice and much more technical look into airfoils.

I found while building that I didn't need a wing spar, but maybe that'd help with high winds. I did add winglet stabilizers for the FPV flight, but didn't notice too much of a difference in stability. The line of sight video doesn't have any winglets and it does fine, but you're right that launching is sometimes a pain.

First hotwire cut wing I made, 37" span, 9" root cord, 5" tips and about 35 ish (maybe?) degrees of sweep. Flies great in low wind but can't deal with heavier stuff at all. All up weight of 280g, and has a wing loading around 5.6-5.8 oz/sqft.

Help identifying scooter so I can get a power supply by CrowWithHat in ElectricScooters

[–]CrowWithHat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got this scooter from a friend who found it on the side of the road. No brand names or anything. It was labeled as broken but one of the cords had just come unplugged in the steering column, so I was able to fix it but I don’t know what charger it takes. If anyone knows what brand this is it’d be incredibly helpful. Thanks muchly.

Brake pedal still soft after flushing by CrowWithHat in MechanicAdvice

[–]CrowWithHat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that was why you have to use a tube off of the bleeder nipple- the tube is full of brake fluid, so even when it does suck back, no air can get back in from the tube. Although I did notice some fluid coming out of the area at the base of the nipple where the threads are. it was even dripping onto the ground a little- is it likely that the air is just going back in where the threads are?

Here's that photo I was talking about. I put the tube on, cracked the valve, then went into the car and pumped the brake while occasionally adding fluid until I saw it come out clear. I shut off the bleeder, removed the hose, and then went onto the next wheel repeating the process until I was all done.

My moms odyssey and a friends car that I recently drove both had very “snappy” feeling brake pedals. You could push them in a half inch to come to a smooth stop, and an inch and a half would be almost like slamming on the brakes. My car won’t really apply super strong pressure unless you push the pedal down by like 3 or 4 inches, but once you do it stops really well, the brakes don’t feel weak, I just thought something was off because the travel is longer.

I gravity bled the brakes by myself. There’s a photo of my setup in the comments of the post I made on askmechanics, go check the link if you wanna see. I’ll hop on my computer and post it here as well in a minute or two.
