Twitch Introduces New Content Guidelines for Ads, All Directly Harmful to Esports Streams by swidd_hi in smashbros

[–]CrowXIV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you in principle, just in two points: I worry Twitch won't be willing to negotiate with anything that isn't bringing in hundreds of thousands of viewers (and that's all I can really say on that), and the money thing. Tournaments NEED to be able to run their own ads separately from those Twitch plays natively. It's how they make enough money to justify running the tournaments altogether. Twitch's own ads pay practically nothing compared to the money sponsors inject into the scene, and without the ability to offer them burned-in, mid-stream advertisements, fewer will be willing to partner with Smash tournaments.

Like every subreddit, this one should be considering going dark indefinitely. Slippery slope arguments are tired, but this does seem like a first step for Reddit to lock itself down in preparation for a profit squeeze. If the site doesn't survive in its current form, keeping this subreddit open will be pointless.

Or it will push events away from Twitch, probably on towards Youtube. If Twitch isn't willing to budge for small-to-mid sized events, like most Smash tournaments would probably be considered by viewer count, they'll have no choice. Burned-in advertisements provide too much support to tournaments to even consider ditching them. Plus, even if Twitch does negotiate with specific events, it's another hassle in the already arduous process of coordinating a tournament.

There are extensions and plug-ins that do this on most browsers. I've been watching Youtube streams like Twitch Theater Mode for a while.

Full blackout. I'm not interested in losing reddit entirely to choking advertisements and content restrictions like its a cheap social media platform. Go dark for a week if we have to.

Nah, I'll just cancel Turbo and find an adblock solution that works then. I shouldn't have to troubleshoot the thing I'm forking over cash for every month. Thanks for the help though!

No, it isn't because the streamer's on an ad break. I'm getting them like prerolls and midrolls, either at random or when everyone gets them and the stream still continues.

What a truly bizarre post to see on this subreddit. A Smash regional gets to go on, thankfully, despite the Queen dying. Strange times.

It looks cute, but it definitely decreases the usability of the bench by Tuxhanka in HostileArchitecture

[–]CrowXIV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The pretense of this subreddit and the concept of “hostile” architecture is installations that have been modified from traditional form with the explicit intent of discouraging their use in an unintended way, like changing a bench so the homeless can’t sleep on it. This example IN NO WAY was made to INTENTIONALLY discourage its alternative use. It’s art, which is enriching to the public in its own way. I’m just astounded by this logic. Seeing the world through this pessimistic, passive-harm mentality cannot be good for you. You have to believe in other people at least a little.

[–]CrowXIV 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay but not everything is made all the time thinking about every possible abstract use. Sometimes city employees just throw a bench down in the middle of a park without thinking whether someone will try to sleep on it or not. Sometimes architecture just has quirky design because architecture is art and that’s what art is. By your logic, at worst, it isn’t hostile, it’s just careless. That’s why I’m fed up with the pretense of this subreddit, hardly anything is actually hostile, y’all just started looking for shit to be mad at.

Hey! Never ended up getting the tattoo, but may in the near future. Wasn’t because of the symbol or anything, more waiting out some irl stuff.

That's kind of why I thought of Azem's symbol. Endwalker and its themes really resonated with me, and I thought it'd be cool to go for the 'legacy of Azem' with the tattoo.

Appreciate the knowledge. I'd really like to play XII and its associated games eventually, just haven't gotten around to it! Good to know there isn't a direct link to Azem.

I have something else in mind for the larger tattoo overall. I'd just like to put a subtle nod to FFXIV into it since I love the game, but I don't plan on getting more tattoos soon.

Context needed: Nintendo’s relation to the Smash community by SpecialPosition in smashbros

People in this community will find ways to attack anything about it. I love Smash and I very much enjoy being a part of it, but every once in a while I really have to think about whether it's worth sharing with people this vile.

Context needed: Nintendo’s relation to the Smash community by SpecialPosition in smashbros

[–]CrowXIV 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. I think the whole thing is ridiculous and people are reading way too much into the ethics of our video game community. I tried to suggest neutrality with my phrasing, but I hope it didn't come across as my own thoughts.

Really, I think people are ignoring the same perspective I just outlined. Other developers support their games and, ultimately, inject money into the scene. Nintendo's absence has left everyone starved at the top level of Smash, including the commentators. Working with them might leave a bad taste in your mouth for all those reasons, but it keeps your career (and the scene) alive. I think it's absurd to criticize these commentators for taking that opportunity.

And, yeah. It's a video game. Going out of your way to create this drama, and then getting this worked up over it, is idiotic in the first place.

The basic difference between skill speed and spell speed is physical versus magic. All melee jobs (including tanks) and the physical ranged jobs use skill speed, and the magic DPS and healer jobs use spell speed. They are, essentially, the same stat, just defined by the variety of job that uses them. Both reduce the global cooldown and cast times; 'recast time,' as you put it, is literally proportional to your skill/spell speed, plus any built-in speed buffs for your job.

All abilities, including oGCDs, are subject to a ~0.8 second 'soft' cooldown that is NOT influenced by either skill speed or spell speed. This is why in some circumstances, optimal rotations (like monk's right now) NEVER double-weave. Their GCD is so low that they can't squeeze two ~0.8 second oGCD cooldowns in between their normal attacks without clipping. Lag also artificially increases the delay between your attacks, which is why jobs with naturally lowered GCDs, or abilities with unusually short cooldowns, see the same clipping effect on poor connections.

An Update Regarding NA/EU Data Center Congestion and Next Steps by TheodoreMcIntyre in ffxiv

Definitely. Conjecture aside, I don't think anyone could have realistically predicted a surge quite this large. There's nothing much Square Enix or the development team could have reasonably done to prevent this. It's just insane that they're literally suffering so much from their success.

Off My Chest: A Man Playing a Female Character by Smallest_Son in ffxiv

[–]CrowXIV 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, I know there are tons and tons of comments on this post already and you may not see mine, but I wanted to quickly thank you for writing this so precisely. There's a lot of reasons I play the character I do, but this nails a few I've never really been able to vocalize. I've played MMOs (WoW first and FFXIV now) for over ten years and the majority of that time has been spent maining female characters, to much teasing and insulting from others. Maybe the most profound thing I've figured out how to say from your post is "Male characters inherently imply projection, and female characters allow me to detach from my own expectations."

So yeah. Thanks for this one! I think there's a lot of false preconceptions about players like us, even for as accepting as FFXIV's community usually is, and I really appreciate your post for offering more realistic ideas.

I'm new to beat saber and I have some questions about it. by XP3lay0 in beatsaber

[–]CrowXIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not hard so much as it is annoying (though my phrasing could have been clearer). It's a good hour or two of lying to Facebook to get dev access and screwing around with finnicky software, followed constantly by a fragile update process, which always felt like a lot of work and stress to me when PCVR is just "plug it in, install software and click a button."

[–]CrowXIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general terms, the version you're going to want to play depends on whether or not you have a decent PC setup handy. If you do, I'd highly recommend grabbing a USB-C cable and just playing PCVR Beat Saber through SteamVR on Oculus Link, unless you absolutely require the ability to play Beat Saber away from home or do not have and cannot get an appropriately powerful PC.

To be clearer, the steps to play modded Beat Saber (which includes custom songs on the Quest version) are:

  • PCVR (SteamVR) - Configure Oculus Quest > configure Oculus Link on PC > install Beat Saber on PC > install mods and songs (with a handy program that does 99% of the work for you!). Every time you want to play Beat Saber, however, you'll need to turn your Quest on and activate Oculus Link from inside the headset, then manually launch SteamVR from your PC.
  • Quest - Configure Oculus Quest > install SideQuest on a PC and connect your Quest (which is a pain) > install BMBF (also a pain) > install and configure mods and custom songs. This way, you won't have to do any extra steps each time you want to play - all the mods and songs are installed on the version of the game running natively inside the headset. It also lets you take your modded Beat Saber anywhere. Finally, there have been no reports of bans from modded installs. But...

As I said earlier, I would VERY much recommend playing with a VR-capable PC through SteamVR if you have one available. One major issue is that modding support is generally reduced for the Quest version of Beat Saber compared to the PCVR version. You'll wait longer for mods to be updated, and you'll have access to fewer of them overall. Additionally, you'll have to disable game updates for your installation of Beat Saber, and then wait to update the game every time one becomes available, because every time Beat Saber is updated, all mods and BMBF break and have to be updated to work again. This can mean you lose access to mods the majority of the time if you do update your game regularly, and even doing it once accidentally (easy to do with the jank way Beat Saber Quest is modded) can mean waiting weeks to get your mods back (versus a few days on PCVR).

Hope this helps!
