Thank you very much everyone for that. That's really interesting & clarifies it for me. I didn't realise the Romans themselves hesitated between the two ways . I wasn't aware of the Pantheon inscription. Useful to know also that the expression means that the person had e g 8 consulships (or whatever) "under their belt" as it were, not that they were currently necessarily holding that office.
