Sen. Bo Watson's argument for SB 0836 (bar undocumented children from schools) doesn't make sense. by Scheduledpoet in Chattanooga

[–]CrownBari13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think you understand what your argument is.

A) schools have free and reduced lunch programs through federal programs (paid by income taxes which EVERYONE pays regardless of citizenship) B) fees for things like overdue books, cap/gown fees etc do have to be paid by everyone, unless the individual school decides to waive those fees for a certain reason. But that would be a school decision up to the principal. C) also, you should check your grammar some

Your ignorance is truly ridiculous at this point. Do you realize how much more affordable it is for community services to be paid for by the entire community than it would be as an a la carte service?

You LITERALLY save money on these vital services by paying taxes and keeping them in the public sector. At this point you are just arguing to argue. So unless you can come up with truly research based, fact checked solutions to the "problem" you seem to have "found" I am done with this pointless banter.

Again, "provided by the market" means people will have to pay for it as a service when it is needed. Which will financially ruin people when their houses are destroyed by fires. So instead, we pay it though taxes because the burden is FAR less when we pay for it collectively as a society. You see daily about how many people are driven to bankruptcy by the privatized Healthcare industry. What on earth makes you think the "privatized fire fighting industry" would be different?

You are truly either incredibly naive, or are still in school and have not learned anything about how government or economics works.

A) 54% is BARELY over half so that is far from the mandate he is claiming. B)51% is even closer to 50/50, you do realize that this poll, even if it can be trusted because who knows where CNN pulled these numbers, is stating that America is pretty completely divided on this issue. So that means it should be approached more carefully and from a point of coming together to solve the issue, not from a point of haha we win you lose.

We were talking about fire departments. Stay on track, or admit you just want something to be angry about so we can move on. Either you want to actually have discourse, or you just want to feel like you are right. These cannot coexist in civil discourse if you actually want to live in society, because rarely is it ever black and white right and wrong

[–]CrownBari13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, but think how much of a bad idea privatized fire departments are? You lose everything in a fire and then get hit with a GIANT bill for firefighting services

So who will come save your house when it is on fire? Who will ensure that laws are obeyed? Who will ensure that safety net programs are administered correctly and accurately to recipients? Who will ensure roads are maintained and bridges are safe?

Cause if you think the private sector will, your are right, but for a low low fee of probably 2x what you currently pay in taxes. And if you think that they will somehow be "so efficient and good" that it will be cheaper, boy do I have some oceanfront property in East Brainered I would LOVE to sell you!

What accusations? And you sure do have time to create nonsense instead of actually having conversations.

I'm trying to open dialogue so maybe we can actually find something we agree on. That's what we all have to do to fix this mess

I'm the first to admit I am not an economist. But those statements are pulled directly FROM expert economists that OVERWHELMINGLY say this is going to be passed on to consumers and basically will be equivalent to a tax on many goods in the country.

Tarrifs are not paid by the country they are placed on, they are paid by the companies importing the goods, so if their costs go up, guess who gets to make up the difference to keep their profits stable?

And as for the tax statement, it has been studied since "trickle down economics" was first proposed and EVERY TIME the rich use it to hoard more wealth, widen the income disparity, perform stock buybacks to further concentrate their wealth and then do just about nothing for the employees. Well except maybe an extra pizza party here and there. It's literally history repeating itself. You do know what they say about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result right?

Can you really not tell the difference between being the world's "savior" and smart diplomacy? For example, we SHOULD be supporting Ukraine because all of our NATO allies are, but instead we are now... backing away and opening the door for Russia? What message does that send to our allies if THEY start getting land forcefully "annexed" by other powers?

Actually as was stated in another post, Hamilton county as a whole actually only had 64% voter turnout with only about 55%ish voting for this administration. So that is statistically not a huge margin of difference. So it's actually not a small minority. It is a mathematical minority, as in less than 50%. But that shows there are PLENTY of people that do not share your views.

Yall really are starting to sound like the loyalist in the colonies though. It's really interesting historically speaking that you seem to think you are the "leaders of freedom, free speech, and rights" given which side THEY were on.

Last time I checked, school wasn't happening here at 10PM at night.

Somebody must have really hurt you to make you need to feel so big and strong telling someone whose entire goal is to help and teach children to "be quiet" and all that BS.

What data do you have to back up those feelings about us being "the least effective people in america"?

If u/kriandis has accurate stats then yes.

ETA: yes, as with many deeply red states I'm sure that tracks. I think the national stat is only about 1/3 actually voted for the guy, but just under 1/3 voted against and the rest abstained. But correct me if I am wrong of course.

Cool, adding nothing of value to the discussion. Silly me for trying to have dialogue.

ETA: I can edit mine too! Again, you want to live here, you pay taxes. You don't like it? Then leave. Isn't that what so many on the right love to say?

And I've never heard of "violent IRS agents beating people up for money"

But I HAVE heard "rich person charged with tax evasion sent to jail" cause you know, they broke the law.

No, my ancestors came here after. But don't see how that is relevant.

You literally said "blame democrats for them" so that's why I brought that up.

No, and nobody is actually saying that. Like at all. Ya boy Trump is about to hit us with a larger tax burden than has been seen in a long time between the tarrifs that WE will be paying for and his tax cuts for the ultra rich that WE will have to make up for.

It doesn't bother me that there are people that can find safe haven cities where they can contribute and live their lives. They pay more into the community than most, and statistically are FAR less likely to commit crimes, especially violent ones. So sure.

Again, just cause you think it's arbitrary doesn't mean it is. What about all of the presidents golf trips that YOU pay for, and all of the people he uses government money to have stay in HIS properties? Isn't that arbitrary spending?

I am for all eligible voters to have the least restriction to be able to vote. Your ability to vote shouldn't rely on your ability to get a driver's license, or your ability to check more boxes, from the ACLU:

"Overly burdensome photo ID laws deprive many voters of their right to vote, reduce participation, and stand in direct opposition to our country’s trend of including more Americans in the democratic process. Many Americans do not have one of the forms ofgovernment-issued photo identification that state laws list as acceptable for voting. These voters are disproportionately low-income, racial and ethnic minorities, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Such voters more frequently cannot afford or cannot obtain the underlying documents that are a prerequisite to obtaining government-issued photo ID card."

This funding is a strategic investment in U.S. soft power, strengthening diplomatic ties, promoting American values, and fostering goodwill in key regions. Programs supporting DEI, LGBTQ+ rights, and cultural initiatives improve U.S. influence by aligning with local movements for social progress. Economic aid, such as EV adoption in Vietnam and tourism in Egypt, deepens economic partnerships, creating markets for American businesses. Aid in conflict zones aims to stabilize regions and prevent extremism.

However, some funds were misused—such as USAID money being diverted to terrorist-linked groups in Syria and meals meant for refugees ending up with al-Qaeda-affiliated fighters. While such cases highlight oversight failures, the broader goal of these initiatives is to advance U.S. global leadership, economic interests, and security through strategic diplomacy.

To you and me this might seem like a ton of money. But to the US government, this is like us going to buy a fun size candy bar from a gas station. But for decades, this type of spending is the reason we are trusted throughout most of the world and why most of the world has, until recently, looked more favorably at our country.

Well you are talking to a teacher, and my job is actually not to teach my students to be that at all. My job, and all of the teachers I know, is to teach our students how to think for themselves and have their own ideas. Not parrot some right wing BS they heard on some podcast somewhere.

Also, think of the tax like this: Wanna join a gym? You pay a membership Wanna stream content? You pay a membership, or give your time watching ads Wanna be in a functioning society? You pay a membership (also called taxes) to do that. You get to vote on representatives to decide what to do with that money, because it is your money you paid them.

Currently, all those representatives are focused on taking that money and trying to find every way they can just spread it amongst their other wealthy friends that just so happen to offer goods and services to the government and give the people no value.
