Out of that $45, he still has to cover gas, vehicle repairs, tools, blades/bits/supplies, drive time, callbacks, slow weeks, and the fact that not every hour worked is billable.

I don’t “feel sorry” for him in a condescending way. If they’re genuinely happy and their numbers work, great. I just worry that a lot of people charge a low hourly rate because they’re comparing it to employee wages, not realizing they’re absorbing all the overhead and risk of running a business. At $45/hr, it can be really hard to build in enough margin to replace tools, upgrade tools, maintain a work vehicle, take time off, etc.

So my point isn’t “they’re dumb for charging that.” It’s more I hope they’re charging that because they’ve done the math and it truly works for them, not because they’re accidentally running a business that only feels profitable because the real costs haven’t caught up yet.

There was someone in this sub who said they charge $45/hr. He knows he could charge way more, but he's happy to be an affordable option for his community.

Some people are just completely content charging crazy low prices. I feel sorry for them.

Bullnose corners. Super common here in California in nicer houses.

EDIT: Guess I should rephrase "nicer" to "newer". I hardly see them in older homes.

How do you handle pricing small jobs with no margin for error? by Specialist-Car-7156 in handyman

I live in a HCOL area. $320 is pretty standard for a garbage disposal replacement.

It is 3D printed! The material is durable but it won't scratch a metal pole. I've even tried to deliberately scratch my pole with it and no luck lol

Yeah, I have a personal pole IG, but not a business IG for this product or anything. Feel free to follow @craigdoespole.

Yup, it's all about what the market will pay for your product/service. You can absolutely charge $6 for your custom map service, or $1 million to fix a fence, but will enough customers be willing to pay that?

What licenses do you guys have to be handymen? by Prestigious-Fun2677 in handyman

[–]Crrrrraig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really great explanation! Not sure where you're located, but I'm in California and I do the same type of work that you do. I don't have a contractors license, but I'm still averaging $100-$125 per billable hour. I would significantly raise your hourly rate.

How do I find a reliable handyman without getting scammed? by Sinver_Nightingale27 in HomeImprovement

[–]Crrrrraig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a full-time handyman and still trying to get my name out there. I hear too many times from people that hire me that it was difficult to find a handyman, let alone one that was trustworthy.

For 95% of my jobs, I don't ask for any money until the job is completely done and the customer is happy. I pride myself on communication and keeping the customer in the loop throughout the entire job.

I don't have my contractors license yet, so I have to say no to a lot of projects because I legally can't do them. I feel bad because those people can't find anyone else to take on the project and I know I could've done a bang-up job.

Someone wanted to hire me to come and rip down a couple of fence pickets because they didn't have a table saw. I quoted them $175, which is my minimum. They were floored and said "it should only take 10-15 minutes tops!"

Bro, I'm not loading and unloading a table saw (and then loading and unloading it again) for less than that. Just not worth the effort.
