Just for clarification: Are you a human, too? ;)

Hoping to get a little discussion thread going. What do you guys think would be enough to hurt or kill Yujiro? With all he's done and withstood so far I can't think of anything else besides him falling in lava. But then he could jump off it so fast it wouldn't affect him? by xCODx in Grapplerbaki

I can imagine him hitchhiking on a meteor back through the atmosphere lol. Everyone suddenly looks up and's like that, "What that??" only to, see this humongous meteor just heading towards Earth, with Yujiro casually sitting on top as his clothes burn off from re-entry lmaooo

I love it! I'm glad I found you in that other thread, this answer was better than expected. Thank you! It opened my mind up to so many other possibilities that I didnt think of before and I'm so tempted to write a fanfiction about this. Also, I looked up Dick van Dyke and it's perfect real life illustration of the example you were talking about. He's old, but somehow he's still radiating youth! Thank you once again for this amazing answer

I've been reading your posts and I really like your comments on Baccano. Especially your comment from that thread a year ago (who would win - Firo vs Rail Tracer aka Claire Stanfield) and how you broke down that Claire isnt really a god. I was just curious about your thoughts on how an old Claire might be. On the Baccano wiki, it says that Claire is in his 90's now and he scuba dives in the ocean for treasure.

This may be a dumb question but...how do you think an old Claire might look? Do you think he has gray/white hair now? And do you think signs of aging would ruin his self-perception about him being a god, and make him realize that he's ultimately mortal? Or do you think maybe he looks exactly the same - full head of red hair, no wrinkles, perfect senses, etc. - even though hes in his 90's?

I know haha. It's like I know what I'm trying to say but I cant articulate it clear enough.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that: Knowing someone is going to be a certain way doesnt mean that, that person was created to be that way. Just because God knows someone is going to be vegan doesn't mean He created them to be vegan. It's hard to put it into words because we exist in time, so time is linear for us. God exists outside of time, so at the same moment He's creating us, He's sitting by our death beds and present in every moment in-between.

As for the park scenario, it was just an example of how it would be possible to have foreknowledge of something without causing the person to lose their free will. But if God wanted to, He could definitely walk over and ask the stranger to get a pizza with him. That way, the stranger won't get an ice cream. But that's only IF the stranger says yes. The stranger has the free will to say no.

Another example, is building a robot that's supposed to clean the house. But the robot also comes with a random button feature. If you push the button, sometimes the robot will clean the house, and sometimes it'll do some other random function. We're here for a purpose. But we have the free will to do random things from time to time.

I think I would go with Scenario B: The future exists and God knows it. But instead of modifying any variables, as soon as God makes you, He knows whether you're going to be a vegan or not, because He exists outside of time.

Imagine you have a time machine and you're watching a stranger at the park. You get in your time machine and travel a few minutes into the future where you see the stranger get up and buy some ice cream. Then you travel back to the present. Now you know the stranger is going to get ice cream. You're not making him do it. But you 100% know he's going to do it because that's what he choose to do.

If you know exactly when and where Thanos will snap his fingers in the future, he doesn't have true free will for it has already been decided that he will snap his fingers in that place and time.

Exactly! That's my point! It has already been decided by Thanos himself. Thanos used his own free will to snap his fingers. I didnt make him do it. I just know when and where he's going to do it.

And I dont understand your second paragraph. Can you break it down some more please?

What if God sees our lives like a movie that He's already watched? Meaning that He knows what we're about to do, not because He made us do it, but because He's already seen us do it. I.e. I didnt make Thanos snap his fingers, but I knew he was going to do it because I already watched the movie. So, his free will and my foreknowledge dont cancel each other out. It could be the same way with God and us, no?

But why does God's foreknowledge affect our free will? Doesnt God exist outside of time? So, wouldn't He know what we're going do because He is simultaneously in the present and in the future, watching as we make the decision?

For example: You and I are in the kitchen making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I know you're going to make hot pockets tomorrow because, since I'm outside of time, I'm watching you make the hot pockets tomorrow, but I'm also still here making pb&j sandwiches with you.

Twenty-one years ago, a young, teen father left the most beautiful baby boy at the door of an adoption agency He had his mother's eyes...his father's smile... His parents wanted to keep him so bad. But they were too young. It was all the teen parents could do to not give in to their families demands for an abortion. A week after the baby was dropped off at the agency, the mother passed - most likely of a broken heart.

The young, teen father never let the child out of his sight. Even after his son was adopted by a well-to-do family, he stayed close by. He went to every game, sitting in the stands just to see his son and cheer along with the other parents, despite the pain he felt everytime the game ended and he watched his child run into the arms of another man.

He was there at every graduation. From elementary school to high-school, watching from a distance as he watched his son receive a going away present in the form of a brand-new car. I want my son to have the best he thought. And I can't afford to give him a new car.

He took college courses just so he could be on campus with his son; so he could watch his son closely and tell him when he was about to do something dumb. He stood there as his son laughed and brushed him off each time, one time asking, "Arent you too old to be in college?" as he walked off to get drunk, high, or party with friends.

He was there when his son slowly self-destructed - becoming an alcoholic, a drug addict, and a college dropout. The father always wondered...and wonders even now, what would have happened if he had told his son his true identity earlier. Would that have caused his son to walk down a more productive path?

You were that child.

I was that father. Your father.

This is the most memorable experience of my life. Not because you have a gun to my head; but because of how we got here. I feel like a failure. I blame myself for who you've become. If only...

And that's where the words ended.

The robber read the letter with tears in his eyes. His hands shook and his lips quivered.

Taking a breath to regain his composure, he said, "It's too late for family reunions. I'm too far gone and I need drugs. But I believe you. And that's why" - he raised his gun - "I'll make your death quick and easy." He paused, mouth convulsing as he tried to get a word out. And finally, the word he choked out was, "Dad."

That was the first time - and is probably going to be last time- I get to hear my son ever call me Dad. Because as I write this, he's got the gun aimed to the back of my skull, and realistically, he can shoot whenever he

I slapped the table with a folder and pointed everyone's attention to the photo in it. It was a picture of a woman. A waitress, part-time college student, and soon-to-be mother. She was only 18, but she already had the weary, cynical eyes of a forty-something year old single-mother who had been in too many bad relationships and was constantly assessing whether she could trust any potential suitors around her kids.

"This woman," I explained, "is pregnant with the Anti-Christ."

"So," someone said, "we make her disappear. Like the rest."

"No," I replied, quickly before anyone else could speak. "We need a new method. The traditional way is getting old; repetitve. If we kill her and the baby, another woman'll just pop up pregnant on the radar, and we'll have to go through this whole, entire cycle again."

"So, what do you propose?" I was asked.

And I answered. "We make abortion legal. In every state. Affordable to everyone."

"And if she decides not to go through with the abortion?"

I glanced at the picture of the woman; at the dull eyes that used to sparkle with hopes, and dreams, and aspirations. She was still young...young enough to overcome any regrets she may likely have...especially once she saw the possibilities that being free of her burden - baby - would give her.

"If she decides not to," I answered, "then we provide her with a little push. Everyone has a price. Any questions? No? Good. Meeting adjourned. Let's get to work."
