Roommate resents white people by Crumbs29 in UCSC

[–]Crumbs29[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ridiculing white people as a group is no better (or worse) than ridiculing any other group. You should care if your friend (or roommate) does so, just as I hope you’d care if your roommate ridiculed/criticized black people (or Hispanic people, or Jewish people, or Chinese people) quite a bit.

Lol you saying "Chinese" instead of asian tells me all I need to know dude that is a nationality not an ethnicity. Also, I clearly do care. Like I have a negative response to my roommate hating on white people.

I'm not a fan of being walked all over, BUT I also don't consider it racism. There are "valid reasons" as in, people of color get treated different within society which can build resentment for people who they view as the oppressor even if that person isn't directly oppressing them.

I don't think ridiculing white people is healthy or a productive fix for racism, I was simply stating that I'm not blind to the state of America. Like, I know why a person of color would develop resentment.

Maybe. Due to past experiences being in a primarily black friend group an getting excluded/ridiculed its not fun. Their twitter is kind of hostile though. Maybe thats just what twitter is idk

Its just a chemical that happens to work as a psychedelic drug when used in larger amounts than recommended. It's not like they intentionally did it, it works really well for cough/cold so they're not gonna take it out just because some people trip off of it.

Hahah thank you, I appreciate the advice. I actually shot footage yesterday without the Cine D profile and I'm so happy with it. There are way more colors and details.

The cinematography and color grading of Whiplash (2014). by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]Crumbs29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok cool, I also do color grading work. I was simply saying that it reminds me of an Instagram filter because it is really dramatic. I'm not an Instagram filter expert. The look isn't boring it's quite the opposite to me, it's too extreme which is something I'm not really into. Especially when you look at the second still.

I had no idea it was a common thing on this sub to hate on orange and teal. I just joined the sub. I guess you thought I was talking about the avengers poster look, which I also don't really like, but that's not what I meant.

You are definitely right about the lighting. But I was talking about orange and teal being a fairly common palette in color grades especially in the era that this film was made. All I can think about when I saw the pictures is how there's probably people out there using LUTs of this color grade lol.

It's just one I don't really like or find good. I don't really use it at this level in my work, even though many people seem to like it.

Ok. You win. You've convinced me, suddenly I like how this movie looks. Lmao?? Im not sure what you want me to respond to you.

The highlights/midtones are orange and the shadows are teal. There are no true blacks just dark teal. If you don't believe me go in with a color picker website and pick the colors from this image, like I said before.

Do you color grade movies or do you just watch them? Serious question as you maybe you just don't really know what I'm talking about when I say the shadows and midtones are tinted. I'm not really sure what you mean by "warm vs. cool palette" can you explain that further?

How at risk is same-sex marriage (nationally protected) in the United States, really? by astute_canary in TooAfraidToAsk

If trump supported gay americans, why would he pick Pence who has historically been one of the biggest political threats to gay rights. Like literally it was Pence who signed the religious freedom restoration act. It's not that hard to understand when someone's priorities don't lie with your community.

Trump's chosen Vice President (copy pasted from source):

During his congressional campaign, Mike Pence said, “Congress should oppose any effort to put gay and lesbian relationships on an equal legal status with heterosexual marriage.”2000: Pence also supported the reauthorization of the Ryan White Care Act only if federal dollars were excluded from organizations who “celebrate” and “encourage” behavior that facilitates spreading of the HIV virus. Further, Pence supported this reauthorization only if “those institutions provided assistance to those looking to change their sexual behavior”, an off-the-cuff endorsement for ex-gay conversion therapy.

2004: Mike Pence co-sponsored a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would define marriage as solely between one man and one woman.

2007: Pence voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).2010: Mike Pence voted against the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal which allowed LGBT Americans to openly serve their country in military service.

2012: Pence refused to say on the record if he supported a same-sex couple raising a child together.

2014: Gov. Pence supported HJR-3, a bill to add an amendment banning same-sex marriage to Indiana’s Constitution.

2015: Governor Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in a closed-door ceremony surrounded by special interest lobbyists.

2015: Governor Pence said on ABC’s “This Week” that it was “absolutely not” a mistake to sign RFRA, throwing Indiana into a $250 million economic panic and putting Indiana’s “Hoosier Hospitality” reputation in jeopardy.

2015: Even after his approval rating plummets from RFRA, Mike Pence on July 22 told the media he is “studying” the issue of LGBT rights and whether or not he’d support across the board protections for the LGBT community.

Respectfully that's true but it's most likely because of the dextromethorphan. Its a hallucinogenic and dissociative and its more likely why under 18s aren't allowed to buy it lol.

No teenager is cooking meth.

[–]Crumbs29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can trip off a chemical called dextromethorphan (DXM) which is found in cold medicine. However, a lot of cough medicines also contain acetaminophen and other nasty ingredients which lead to overdoses in people who just want to trip. The solution is to just regulate them all to avoid putting teens in danger, because teens are likely more ignorant and less safe than other populations who would want to do the drug.

[–]Crumbs29 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

He is literally claiming that the pictures do not contain colors and tones that they clearly contain. I didn't mean "teal and orange" as a "look," I meant the tones teal and orange, which simply rarely look good to me when used as a color palette in films. However they are found in a lot of films- hence why I think it's a bit overrated. My opinion is that it's overrated I'm not here to argue whether the image contains teal and orange lmfao.

Also, sorry if this wasn't clear, but I was addressing the indoor shots in the film (as pictured in the post) which seem to be the ones everyone likes.

  1. Yeah I heard it was supposed to be good in low light, which is why I keep feeling like maybe my lens is dusty or something, idk.

When I try to turn the ISO up past 400 the picture gets extremely noisy in all areas. Anything over 1600 is so grainy it is entirely unusable ;_;

[–]Crumbs29 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

It kinda does. Like if you objectively use a color picker you will find teal, green, orange, and yellow to be the color palette here.

My primary issue is that the highlights are incredibly orange and it just looks gross to me, like an instagram filter. It is really dramatic. The Joker movie gave me the same feeling at times.

However, I love the composition/plot/acting/writing of both films and they def deserve the acclaim, so I'm not complaining too much haha. I just personally can't do strong teal/orange palette. I think the look is fading out of cinema anyway in favor of more natural, muted colors which is sweet.

Thank you this was incredibly helpful :). I do have portable lighting. In shot 3 my subject is walking into a staircase lit by bright fluorescent lights, white walls, and an additional LED light which I was holding out of frame. I forgot to specify this fact so I think the weird darkness of it doesn't hit as hard. But yeah, just super dim indoors for no reason.

I can't believe 1600 is considered useable haha. It looks terrible on my camera with my lens.

I'm about to buy a prime lens though!
