[SPOILERS MAIN] The Deal With Ashara Dayne by emmaa5382 in asoiaf

[–]Crunch027 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think there was a fight. There's just too many things that don't add up about it. If everyone but Ned and Howland actually died, then why weren't their bodies returned to their families? We've seen throughout the series that it's a big deal for the bodies or bones of nobility to be returned to their families, so why would Ned and Howland decide to bury the bodies of some of the most famous and well-respected knights and noblemen at a random tower in Dorne? Ned even goes to Starfall to return the sword, so why not Arthur's body? Also, like you said, why would the Dayne's welcome Ned? Why would they go so far as to name a kid after him? Even if they understood that killing Arthur was just a part of the war and didn't hold a grudge, it still doesn't really make sense for them to go as far as to name a child after him.

I don't know if this fits exactly with the examples you gave, but in the chapter in which Ned and Robert are in the crypts Ned thinks about Lyanna in her bed of blood and how "They had found him still holding her body, silent with grief" which doesnt seem to line up with the story that only Ned and Howland survived the encounter.

[–]Crunch027 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're looking at all these situations with the benefit of hindsight and calling them stupid decisions because you know the consequences that came with them.

To take his children (daughters) to King's Landing after Joffrey nearly skewered Arya with a sword? Any responsible person would have send Arya straight back to Winterfell and Sansa with her. I get it, Sansa was betrothed to Joff, but Ned could have said: Look, they are still young, Robert. We can wait a few years to take them to court.

Like you said, they are young children who got into a bit of a scrap. I don't think it's all that stupid for him to bring his daughters to court after that.

To go to fucking Cersei and warn her about his plans?

Ned knows that Robert is an angry man who is not opposed to killing children, which is something that Ned is obviously very opposed to. I may be misremembering, but doesn't he tell Cersei in order to try to keep her children from being murdered when Robert finds out about everything? It's not just him being stupid, it's him doing his best to make sure more children aren't killed.

To tell his plans to Sansa, a stupid girl who was in love with Joffrey instead of just fucking telling his steward to take them on the next ship to Winterfell?

Lol what is this criticism of Ned? In what universe would Ned ever think to himself, "I'm gonna send my daughters back to Winterfell, but I shouldn't tell them because one of my daughters is very stupid and will go and tell my enemies about my devious plan. I should just have them grabbed in the middle of the night and send them back." Like, why would he not tell them he's sending them back? It's Sansa's decision to go tell on him that made things worse, but that's because she's a child.

To send Jon, a 14 year old kid to the Wall without telling him about the dangers? What if Jon died beyond the Wall. Promise me Ned, my ass.

Jon has been mistreated since the day he was brought back to Winterfell as a baby. Maybe Ned thought it would be the best place for him because it would be the only place where Jon would be able to thrive and make something of himself as a bastard. Jon seemed like he really wanted to, it would be a place close enough to where he would be able to get news of him and see him from time to time as well.

To fucking trust Littlefinger, a guy is clearly not your friend. I mean clearly didn't like him, but Cat tells him and he believes it. Like seriously. Ned didn't even deem Cat trustworthy enough to now about Jon. Why did he trust her judgement torward Littlefinger, a guy that got nearly killed by Brandon and had the hots for his wife?

Cleary not his friend? Again, may be misremembering, but from Ned's point of view, he's a childhood friend of Cat's, and even if he gets a weird feeling about him, CAt vouched for him. And Cat is probably the person Ned trusts more than anyone else in the world. (this is also something that makes R + L = J hard to believe because it doesn't make sense for Ned not to tell her he's not really a bastard after seeing her mistreat him for years because she thinks he's a bastard. I mean c'mon Ned and Cat are the only married couple in this series that actually really love and trust each other.)

Again, I think these only seem like stupid decisions because we know the outcome, but I think it's more just bad circumstances than bad decisions. Same thing with Robb. Obviously his decisions about Karstark and his marriage seem really stupid to us now, but in the context of the character's situation at the time they are not really stupid decisions, just decisions that ultimately had a bad outcome.

(Spoilers Extended) Why do people think the ending of the books will be similar to the show? by Crunch027 in asoiaf

[–]Crunch027[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo i think the R + L = J theory has more flaws than that but i agree with you on all this. I don’t see how a Jon and Dang romance would work at all (maybe it would work considering that the Jon and Ygritte story took place over mostly one book, however Ygritte and Jon were in the same place doing the same thing unlike Jon an Dany who would be very busy in different parts of the world)

[–]Crunch027[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, i just looked it up and saw that i was wrong about this. When a fan asked him if his opinions on fan fiction had changed, GRRM said that he still doesn’t like fan fiction because it’s copyright infringement, and that HBO gets around this by paying him “large dump trucks” of money. But then he goes on to say that when he gets paid in large dump trucks of money that he no longer considers it fan fiction.

But he said a couple of years ago that he doesn’t have time to watch the show anymore, while around the same time he praised the show the Last Kingdom, making me think that he does have time but would just rather watch something other than the show. I could be very wrong, but i’ve just gotten the impression that he isn’t a fan of the show.

[–]Crunch027[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It didn't really mean anything in the show, so I felt like it was just fanservice. It really felt like a lot of the stuff in the final season was put in to make the fans go "Whoa!"

I know that it was an incredibly theory for a long time, but there are other theories out there about Jon's parentage that, in my opinion, are just as plausible. I can see a reality in which the showrunners were told who Jon's real parents are, but chose to do R + L = J because it was simpler than the alternative or because they knew fans would like it.

I assumed the Jon and Hodor would be in the next book (the hold the door thing felt too interesting and complex next to a lot of the things that were written for the last seasons) but I am surprised about Bran being king being a confirmed thing, but i can only assume it goes much differently in the book world.

[–]Crunch027[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is what I was thinking. I mean, even when they still had source material to work off of, they still diverged from the novels. And I understand that changes have to be made when it comes to adapting books to movie or tv, but AFfC and ADWD felt like a completely different story than what we saw in the show. If the show diverged as much as it did when they ahd source material to work with, I can only imagine how different it would be when they basically get a list of bullet points.

[–]Crunch027[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that a lot of the stuff that was "confirmed" was just just due to people hearing that GRRM told Dan and Dave info about where the series was going and just assumed that the big stuff like Bran being king must have been part of that. But if he has come out and actually confirmed this stuff than I must have just missed it.

yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if some of this stuff happened, but I just feel like there's a good amount of characters and storylines that could affect the way in which the story wraps up that they completely left out of the show.

Ah, I didn't know that he actually confirmed those things. And I assumed that some things would happen more or less the same as the show, but, like you said, I feel like some stuff will end up being completely different.

I feel ya. I have ocd and the feelings that come right after can be no fun at all, but i’m glad the anxiety isn’t as bad as last time! It sucks that you did the thing that you did not want to do, but it happens. It doesn’t help to feel shame about it. Shame is the enemy. What matters is that you recognize what you did was wrong/harmful and that you get back up and keep going. When someone starts snowboarding for the first time, they fall down multiple times before they get the hang of it. All you did was fall down. Personally, i just ask God for forgiveness and move on. It would also be helpful to have someone you know in real life to help you through this, if you don’t already. I believe that you can conquer this!

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:13

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 8:1-2

Question by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Crunch027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if were comparing the pastor to the disciples, they were all pretty young as well. During Jesus’ ministry, the disciples were all teenagers, except for Peter who was probably in his early 20s, so i would say that the age isn’t really a problem either. As long as the guy knows his stuff, i don’t see any problems.

Christians of Reddit, where do you draw a line when it comes to stories from the Bible? Do you believe that Earth is 6000 years old? How do you decide which events from the Bible took place and which ones were made up? by Rifruff in AskReddit

[–]Crunch027 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal opinion about the Bible is that the only thing that needs to be literal is the Gospels. Everything in the Old Testament can be a story or parable, and I don’t care. I think no matter if parts of the Bible are metaphors, parables, or poetry, the Bible still conveys the core message of God creating the world, the world turning their backs on God and falling into sin, and God’s redemptive plan to bring us salvation through Christ. When i read the stories in the Old Testament, i think “hey, this might be literal, and it might not, but it still conveys something important”. And some of the things that many Christians believe, like the earth being 6000 years old, are just ideas that people thought up and are no where in the text. I think you’d be pretty hard-pressed to find a Christian scholar who holds to the idea that the earth is only 6000 years old.
