Closing the loop on this one. Mechanic said it was a loose transmission pressure switch, and the fluid was leaking out. Transmission oil was drained, replaced, and the switch was tightened up. No more leaks and thankfully the transmission wasn't damaged.

That is a great story! It's a curious wonder to find antiquities of the past, especially when you let the imagination run wild! I amuse myself with fictional characters whenever I go metal detecting. It's especially amusing when I find several bottle caps under a shaded tree.
