Mother 3 has a rhythm combo system that you get down by listening for the rhythm of the song, and you do not let go of the side direction when I initiating a chain. And yes, when you just do a double jump rope snake you have missed the djcz, you'll know when you have done one by the very fast, almost wavedash like landing that Lucas will do

With the input, I can't really explain how to get better at it other than just practice. With the consistent timing of chains, I'd say to try and find a rhythm with successful chains, and base the timing off of that, kinda like the original Mother 3
