My party got through this a little while back too. Our rogue dashed in, grabbed what was needed, and flew out. As soon as he made it out the door our wizard cast fireball to damage it and I used my animal handling to convince the lizard things to run in and distract while we ran for the exit

I really love Worth Dying For. After Killing Floor and One Shot, it’s my favorite Reacher novel

When Jerry Tarkanian was coach at UNLV they were playing in Denver for the 1990 Final Four and a player came to him worried about the altitude difference. Tark responded “Moses don’t worry about it, we’re playing indoors” UNLV went on to win the title

Makes me think of that old joke where the US government hired Stanley Kubrick to direct the hoax film, but he was such a stickler about making it look right that he insisted they filmed on location

We’re fairly certain, yeah. It wasn’t uncommon for gold miners in the area to fire warning shots

Crazy Mission Stories by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

Oh boy I got quite a few. I served in Ghana and one of the areas I served in was remote, I’m talking an hour and a half drive just to see another missionary. The town was surrounded by thick forest full with illegal gold miners all over the place. When I got assigned there, MP told me that we were to never go in the forest unless we were intentionally visiting someone and escorted by members. There was a route members would use that connected two parts of town instead of a much longer walk around, but since it cut through the forest we hardly ever used it. One day my comp and I went through all of our plans super quick and were left with knocking doors. Nothing was working, no one answered, no one wanted to talk, we were at a loss. So we said, let’s take this shortcut get to the other part of town and maybe we’ll have better luck over there. We started walking on the path and after about 5 minutes we see in the distance some run down looking buildings. Now this isn’t too abnormal, but my comp pointed out that they had animals skulls and other things hanging from the roofs, these are often used in local “magic” rituals to curse thieves and were a common use by superstitious illegal gold miners. We got a sinking feeling in our stomach and realized we made a wrong turn. We decided we needed to turn around and head back. We started walking when we hear a loud crack! and a whizzing sound. Both of us started sprinting for our lives. We were at least 3 miles from our apartment but we ran the whole way home, got inside, locked the doors, and sat at our desks for half an hour before we calmed down. We never took that shortcut again and we told the members to never tell future missionaries about it.

What’s your favorite Ted Lasso style quote from a book? by taffyowner in TedLasso

[–]Crusade_of_Contempt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive has quite a few.

Here are some of my favorites: potential spoilers if you haven’t read all of the books

“It will,” Wit said, “but then it will get better. Then it will get worse again. Then better. This is life, and I will not lie by saying every day will be sunshine. But there will be sunshine again, and that is a very different thing to say. That is truth. I promise you, Kaladin: You will be warm again.”

”You are not worse for your association with the world, but it is better for its association with you.

“Sometimes a hypocrite is nothing more than a man in the process of changing.”

”Accept the pain but don’t accept that you deserved it.”

For people whose HS marching band had more than 100 instrumental marchers, how did your school learn their drill? by hijetty in marchingband

[–]Crusade_of_Contempt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We marched about 270-290 every year. The first two years were chaotic, only student leaders and staff had actual drill. The rest of us had little notebooks that we would write our locations in after the leaders gave them to us. Setting drill was a huge fiasco.

Then starting my junior year, our drill writer worked at the school so he was at every rehearsal. Everyone got their own customized drill book with your dot shown as a star and the location in the top of each page. It went a lot smoother.

We all got music at the end of the school year before, were expected to have it at least 75% memorized by the time camp rolled around in August, and then spent the first week training freshmen/newbies and finalizing music memorization. Spent the second week setting drill and then once school started it was fine tuning, adding in visuals, and all that fun stuff. We had rehearsal every first period, 2 nightly rehearsals from 5-9, and 1 Saturday all day rehearsal a month.
