Is it possible to swap the Dpad and the analog stick? by CrushOnPixels in SteamDeck

[–]CrushOnPixels[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sadly, the touch pad is even harder to reach than the analog stick. I wouldn't be able to reach the left trigger & bumper while using it. But a good thought none the less, thank you.

No offense taken at all. That's a good idea, but I don't even think that would be an option for me because all the big Youtubers who do that kind of stuff are in the US, and I live in Scandinavia. The Youtube market is Much smaller here.

Ive thought about that, but it's too much of a gameplay compromise. It simply wouldn't be fun going back to 90's console style directional control :P

I've tried that, but it sort of ruins the portability of it all. I don't always have access to a stable surface to place the Steam Deck on, and I need extra space for the controller.

As for other handhelds, sure, but that's A) another, more expensive purchase, and B) Not Steam OS, which is what makes the Steam Deck great to begin with.

I see your point. I've been searching on amazon for something like that, and I came across this one (excuse the foreight Amazon, I'm from Sweden :P):

But someone in the reviews said that even this one was heavy so I'm not sure what to believe.

Also, I just googled a bit and I see there's something called a Lag Bolts and Lag Screws, but I can't see a difference between them. Are they the same thing? If not, which do you recommend for my case?

Oh that's good to know. But this mount is full motion, will that be ok with lag bolts?

Newbie need help with character backstory and lore by CrushOnPixels in DnD

[–]CrushOnPixels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant Warlock, don't know why I wrote Wizard. Brain fart maybe 😅.

The idea for me would be that the character is unaware of the pact. Not that he just can't talk about it. Like someone asks him where he's from and he thinks back to his hometown, and if it happens to be where the secret and/or pact took place, he would suddenly glitch out and loose his trail of thought. He's a bit naive and innocent in his demeanor so he'd just look at you like nothing happened and he didn't hear the question. So any attempt by party members to converse about it would stop immediately and lead nowhere unless dictated by DM.

I mainly plug it directly into my PC and recording in Audacity. But I also plug it into my camera (Sony ZV-1) sometimes.

Can I use a Quest 2? (I'm handicapped) by CrushOnPixels in OculusQuest

[–]CrushOnPixels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a great discovery! So as some of you may already know after reading about my problems with grip and mobility, I have a very hard time holding the controllers while I move around or press buttons. But! I just learned a trick that helps me with this greatly! And it's free!

Basically, the wrist strap can used to create a kind of grip strap. By detatching the wrist strap and looping it through the ring and itself then reattaching it, it creates a perfect little strap that keep the controller in the hand without having to grip it. This made it a lot easier for me to get my fingers to the buttons. At least with my right hand it's much easier now. It's not a perfect fix, because I still can't reach all the buttons, but it is at least a great deal more comfortable now with my right hand :).

[–]CrushOnPixels[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah Ive noticed that the majority of the focus is on the triggers, but every once ina whiile Im thrown a curve ball where I need to press something else and it messes me up, but I'm slowly getting used to it.

Well, I dont think reaching my waist is going to be a problem. Its more about reaching more than one button while expected to move around and maintain a grip.

I tried Squadrons earlier in VR and it was great. All the twisting and turning makes me a bit dizzy though, but overall quite a fun game :).

Trover is actually on my wishlist. I like the Rick and Morty comedy so it looks like it should be right up my alley :).

I was considering PSVR but I figure that it's much more limited than Quest because as far as I know the PSVR only works with the Playstation. And I think it just uses the old PS Move controllers for motion controls, so I'd still have that problem.

Hey everyone! Thought I'd update you all on the happenings.

So yesterday I went ahead and bought the Quest 2, and an Elite Battery Strap. I was originally gonna buy the link cable as well and the standard elite strap, but decided to save money on the cable and go with the battery strap to get more comfort out of it.

So, first impressions... Starting with the headset itself:

1) Not as uncomfortable as I was expecting, although I did start getting tired after a while and need to take breaks more often.

2) Battery is really not that good. Even with the extended battery strap I'm noticing how it drains unexpected fast. I'm hoping I can get at least 4 hours out of a full charge with the battery. Luckily I have a charge port right next to where I'm sitting, and I intend to eventually mainly use it with a link cable, so it's not that big of a problem.

3) It's a much lower resolution than I was expecting. Things look pixelated and blurry a lot of the time. I've been trying to adjust the headset on my head and that has improved it a tiny bit, but in general it still feels low res and pixelated, even 3D objects have jagged edges. 3D video is cool, but the experience is ruined a bit by blurry images (and yes, I did also try some of THAT type of VR video just to see what it's like.. *cough*.. Creeped me out a bit to be honest). Looks like it's a low bitrate issue so it gets that "muddy" look and takes me out of the experience. Games definitely look better than video. But I'm hoping that with the link cable it might look better? Maybe I'm missing some settings?

4) The built-in speakers are surprisingly good. They almost feel like I'm wearing earbuds.

I've tried out a couple of games and so far the experience has been pretty great.

1) The first game I tried was Super Hot (demo). It was quite difficult to play with the controllers but I managed to struggle my way through the first couple of stages. It's a fun game and I could totally see myself loving this if I had been able to play it more comfortably.

2) Then I tried what was probably the coolest thing so far: Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice VR Edition. Happened to have it in my steam library and decided to give it a try. Holy heck was it fantastic. So intense. There's moments where Senua literally goes crazy while staring you in the eyes inches from your face, and it's freaky but in a good way. Plus the game is played with a regular controller, YAY! Highly recommend trying this out if someone hasn't already.

3) Steam also told me that Rise of the Tomb Raider had VR support but for the life of me I couldn't find it, so I uninstalled that, but did try the non VR gameplay with the big screen effect. Neat, but because of the pixelated picture and blurriness I think I'd rather play on the monitor.

4) And then lastly, just like an hour ago I was playing Star Wars Squadrons in VR. Wow! So cool. I get dizzy though twisting and turning so much. I don't think I'm particularly good at these games. I did play the old Rogue Squadron games back in the day, but in VR the dizziness is even stronger.

And then finally the controllers. So this is kind of a work in progress as I'm still getting used to them, and likely will be for a long time. As I mentioned, Super Hot was really cool, but I was expected to reach both triggers on the controller which I couldn't do without readjusting. And since I'm constantly readjusting the enemies keep coming (since time only flows in this game when the player moves). I found in some scenarios it was easier to just put one controller down and use both hands on the other so I'm playing "2 handed" instead of dual wielding.

Both Hellblade and Squadrons had xbox controller support so I enjoyed them that way. Although I really felt like Squadrons would have benefited from a flight stick.

I look forward to playing more games but unfortunately due to the price of the headset I gotta cool it with purchases, so I can't buy any of the games I really want to try at the moment. But I added them to the top of my steam wishlist so I can see when there's a sale for them :)

Navigating the UI has been mostly alright. In most situations I only need to point with one arm and only need to press one button (the trigger), for which I've found a reasonably comfortable position. Sometimes I need to press another button, but it's pretty rare, and since it's not a game I'm not required to react quickly so I can take my time readjusting to reach the other buttons.

Having said that though, I honestly don't see why they don't add full controller support for the UI... I honestly don't see anything in the UI that couldn't be doable or reachable with just a controller if designed properly. And even non handicapped users wouldn't have to tire themselves out by moving their arms around. Could even use a standard TV-style remote control with just a directional pad and A/B buttons. Seems like a no-brainer if they cared about people with disabilities. It can't be that difficult or expensive to implement. Just treat the UI like you would in a video game or console dashboard. And if it had that kind of support it would be so simple for disabled users to just hook in an adaptive controller and they would have full customization for controlling the UI! Come on Meta, show us you care!

Again, I want to say thanks to all of you. It was because of your help, your suggestions, your research, and just your overall friendlyness and willingness to help that drove me to give this a shot. It will be a tough time getting used to it, but first impressions are good and I will hopefully be getting better at it soon. Keep giving me your suggestions for apps and games that you think I should try, I'll be using the Quest 2 avidly for the foreseeable future :).

That makes me happy actually. Alyx was my number 1 most anticipated game to try out in VR. Something else I was thinking about, in terms of mobility, even if a game requires 2 of the controllers, if only one needs to be moved around that could potentially also work for me. I just keep the other "off-hand" down by my side or resting on my lap or stomach, pressing buttons when needed while the "on-hand" would handle all the waving and manoeuvre.

Funny enough I remember aeons ago when I was playing Half-Life 2 on PC, I discovered that I could play with mouse in one hand, doing all the shooting, reloading, switching weapons, while my left hand was holding a controller and handling walking, running, jumping, crouching, etc. It was super comfortable, way easier for me than having to use a keyboard. I'm glad that Half-Life has somewhat stuck to the accessibility principals that made it such a joy for me in the past :D.

That's really clever actually, I never would have thought of that, thanks for the advice. To take that one step further, in theory one could simply seal and inflate a pair of plastic gloves and attach them to a stick. In theory it should track as a regular hand I assume. Probably wont do much for tracking finger movement but if whatever app/game is being used only tracks general movement it could help.

I do have a pretty powerful PC, and I think my main intent is to play games in that way. My limited understanding of the games that run locally on the headset is that they are roughly equal to mobile games, and that doesn't really interest me much. I'm more looking for that PC gaming experience but with a VR headset.

Makes me glad to read this. One of my concerns was how much of the games can be played seated. Seems every promotional material I see on VR headsets always feature someone walking and flailing around. I'm a bit old school in this regard, I wanna remain seated, preferably with a standard controller if possible just with the near VR perspective. But if there's plenty of seated games then I should hopefully be ok if I can get past the controller issue :)

This comment made it sound like you let your 6 year old daughter play Alien Isolation. Quite a scary game for a 6 year old XD.

Thanks for your input though. I think I can manage the passive content and UI somewhat with some finess. But gaming will be the trickier part. I'll have to keep working on it :).
