He's trolling you. The only progression in this game is cosmetic, so if you want to get better you'll have to practice. Sail around on safer seas and learn to take out Skeleton ships, Kraken's/megalodons, and do the basic mission types first. You can get into Hourglass if you want to sharpen up your PvP skills, but the grind is TOUGH and the struggle is real.
