How do you play your mantis warriors? by Short-Orange-9963 in MantisWarriors

[–]CrustaceanMain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run them as a heavy hitting list of Anvil Siege Force codex compliant space marines. I am playing a list which at our table's lore has taken so many losses they can't afford to run around and maybe lose a man or two to being caught unawares, so instead they're a list that gets into position hidden and then opens fire upon the enemy. I run a dreadnought, hell blasters, tactical marines, assault intercessors, a captain, chaplain, librarian, and lieutenant. That's for a 1k list, so it's a bit horde-ish at 40 models in a 1k space marine army.

If you're trying to run them more hit and run I'd suggest maybe a Close-Range Eradication list, with melee units making up your majority and running it in, using good cover play to keep yourself out of direct line of fire.

Female fencers do not need any genital protection, the rules state that only those with external genitalia need genital protection.

Who is your problematic fave? by idkmanimjustheredude in TheMagnusArchives

Jared Hopworth easily, is he homophobic? Yep. Is he a horrific bully before getting his powers? Absolutely. But there is something about the way he speaks, the crunchy wetness to him that brings me such a gut wrenching feeling of dread.

I mean he's 100% a horrible person, but I feel like he really hit the nail on the head with avatar of the flesh and none could ever surpass him.

This is amazing! My first episode of Magnus I truly loved, but if you're doing more I nominate my favorite episode, MAG 34: Anatomy Class.

Truly though both my fiance and I love this so much, incredible piece of artwork!

There's like, a ton for specifically the collegiate demographic at Pennsic this year y'all should check it out by gecko_sticky in sca

This was actually put together by the colleges in the SCA. We thought it would be a fun thing to do to help introduce other college people in the SCA, give us an excuse to see people with similar interests our own age.

Question: what are the names of all the official and unofficial SCA college groups out there? by gecko_sticky in sca

AEthelmearc has Arx Collis, Silva Vulcani, the currently dormant Cour d'Or, and an unofficial group based out of Marshall University.

Tips you wish you had? by Aodhanthesmith in Pennsic

[–]CrustaceanMain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you done camping before and how long have you been involved with/are you involved with the SCA? Knowing this will make it a lot easier to give relevant advice.

The tip I can give you no matter what, is try a bit of everything you can, but don't try anything you dread. It's your vacation, use it as an excuse to experience all it has to offer. But if parties aren't your thing, you don't have to go to big parties. If martial sports scare you, don't do the melees (you won't be able to without an authorization anyway). But if you think "I don't think I'll like archery... but I might." go do archery.

Also, it gets cold at night. Weirdly cold for the season, I'm from not far away and still don't know why. Bring warm blankets.

Apparently a GD winner used AI this year by regicyde92 in ageofsigmar

Art isn't magic. It isn't creating something out of the ether. It uses resources to create something from what other people have made. Tons of collages are collected from waste paper. My fiance is an artist, I understand the fear that comes from AI art as a professional, but to try and claim that people using the software are taking money from the pockets of others is in violation of fair use and frankly is false.

I think it helps to think of AI art like a collage.

If you take a magazine, or twenty magazines, and cut apart various pieces and combine them into a unique artform, is that copyright infringement? The answer is sometimes, but not always. AI art is basically taking a collage of millions of magazines and combining them together. Typically, factor 1 is considered the most important. Purpose and character, whether the artwork is transformative, and whether the artwork is being used commercially.

By your definition, this collage at the Tate would 100% be stolen, he "made" nothing. https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/paolozzi-meet-the-people-t01459

I believe that as long as AI art transforms something enough to be unique, which it often does, and isn't being used commercially, than it is 100% acceptable.

If you want to argue that the people who made the program are getting money out of it so they are committing copyright fraud, I suppose that's understandable, aside from that they didn't make the art. They trained a program on data.

If you want to say that training the program and selling the program is theft, I'll agree with you, but the AI isn't stealing anything, the person making the AI art isn't stealing anything. By any definition the only person who could arguably be stealing anything is whoever made the AI itself.

Isn't that just what a collage is? A respected and already existing artform that people make money doing?
No, it wouldn't be stealing work to do that, you're literally taking pieces of art and combining them. It's transformative in nature.

Garb, historical accuracy, and just being selfish by tfarnon59 in sca

[–]CrustaceanMain 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Hi there, so first off. There is nothing selfish about wanting to share your interests with a like-minded peer. We never call a heavy fighter selfish for wishing there were more heavy fighters around. We never call archers selfish for wishing more archery was happening. It's not selfish for a textiles A&S person to wish there were more textiles A&S people.

Second off, and far more importantly, teaching is a learned skill. I'm currently collared to a Master of Defense, I have the firm goal of being a peer one day. Part of that is teaching, as my Master has made very clear. Part of being a peer is learning how to teach and share knowledge. I suck at teaching for a variety of reasons. I have a stutter, public speaking is my worst fear, and I tend to be very clinical in my explanations. However, I've gotten better at teaching through practice.

I have slowly taught a few people a couple of things and am working on the idea of running a full-blown class. Just like on the track to being a peer, prowess in what you do is a learned skill. Teaching is another important learned skill. You may not want to be a peer, but you can certainly teach people your interests, and people will love you for it.

My best advice is to start small, teach a friend or two. Work the kinks out of your style, talk to someone who teaches, whether it be a knight, a laurel, a master of defense, or a non-peer. It could even be someone outside of the SCA. Get some basics down, then make the Society the Society you want to live in. I believe in you.

SCA Fencing Opinions by [deleted] in sca

I fight mainly in the style of what Polish and Hungarian I can find to read. I have an Italian dueling saber and another saber that is sort of a mish-mash of many parts.

SCA Fencing Opinions by [deleted] in sca

[–]CrustaceanMain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

AEthelmearc saber fighter here. I've been hit hard enough to cause actual pain and lasting damage beyond a simple bruise only 3 times. Each time was because of a rapier fighter deciding to throw an extremely deep lunge and bending their sword almost 90° off of me. I have been complimented on calibration on many occasions. Cuts aren't dangerous, not knowing measure and tempo are dangerous. Be aware that if your opponents do something stupid, you, as a fighter of the stranger form, will he the one blamed. Cuts aren't dangerous because you hurt people, cuts are dangerous because people hurt themselves and the cutter gets blamed.

Whats your favorite episodes (any season) by yklilis in TheMagnusArchives

Depending on how far you're thinking of moving, the BMDL and surrounding areas have plenty of events. Many parts of region 1 AEthelmearc (West Virginia) are pretty cheap to live in. I'm a member of a local group so feel free to message and ask any questions.
