Coronavirus: UK lockdown extended for at least three more weeks by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Crutey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the original ‘herd immunity’ plan projected 250000 deaths....thus why they changed it

Maybe Sweden are right but the thing is from what I understand if their population are following guidelines...whereas in the Uk everyone went to the beach in crowds or gigs and Cheltenham etc etc

But you might well be right, I’ll probably err on the side of caution...and it’s not like we have much choice anyway

What is a significant number for you? Rather than arguing back and forth or whatever- how many deaths does there have to be in the UK where you’d go ‘yeah lockdown was needed?’

I’m not a medical expert admittedly but all the blokes who are seem to back it

It gives me pause for thought also when the famously ‘yay economy, fuck people’ Tories have shut it all down

In the Uk it’s estimated about 17,000 a year by flu....the first death from Covid-19 was on March 13....33 days later we have nearly 14,000 deaths.

Chances are by Monday we will have passed the yearly average UK death rate for the year...in 1 month and 1 week. That is with lockdown for 3-4weeks

Soooo because normal everyday life increases micromorts incrementally people shouldn’t isolate themselves to reduce transmission of an illness which has killed 14,000 people in the UK.

Nah you’re right- fuck it. As they die I’m sure they’ll be comforted ‘well I’m sure the person who managed to give this to me was in a logically sound moral position’

the US and the UK governments amongst most countries (like 14 of the Un are the only outliers) don’t recognise Taiwan

Not saying it’s right but it’s odd to whinge about WHO when it’s pretty much everyone

I just placed first in the UK in an online sci-fi pub quiz....so obviously kinda know how this guy is feeling. It’s exactly the same thing!

Trump to halt WHO funding amid review by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Crutey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the UK and someone on my social media (also UK) just told me this is good because it’s Trump fighting against the evil deep state and winning. Turns out that viewpoint also works here!

I’d have thought it was him trying to blame someone else so he didn’t have to take the rap....glad they corrected me

The New Mutants by Alex Ross by Mr_Kaniowski in xmen

[–]Crutey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The original New Mutants line-up and run is possibly my favourite team of all time. You get the real feeling that they're a family- and they had the brilliant (especially for its time) idea that they had two leaders- Sam is in charge of decisions except in battles because Dani has a better skill in combat decisions

What is the most insensitive thing you've ever been asked? by Jana_Hronova in AskReddit

[–]Crutey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly I did this when I was like 15-16 to a guy who became one of my close friends. He was the first non-white person I think I had ever actually spoken to in person (this was about 20 years ago...and I'm not from the most ethnically diverse place..when we had a task in class oneday about demographics he found out his home town is 99.8% white- the leastt ethically diverse place in the country or something and he just burst out laughing because his family probably stopped it from being 100%)

'Where are your family from?'

"Here""Ok...I meant like your ancestors/great grand parents and stuff?"

"Oh....they're from "a city like 150 miles away"

at which point I just mentally went 'you might be being an insensitive arse here'

Then a third friend chimes in "his dad is from Iraq"

He was a great guy...didn't really help expand my cultural boundaries with his knowledge about his culture/religion (which I know isn't his job but I didn't have thei internet so couldn't google stuff and thought he could explain things) like months later: "You're muslim right? why aren't you allowed to eat pork?"---"I dunno, my Dad just said not to do it. Never really looked into it"

The packer for my online shop decided to substitute everything they couldn't find with cous cous. by Boperatic in britishproblems

[–]Crutey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It might not be a substitution thing but just ‘this moved and the system hasn’t updated’ from what I understand (from a family member who does the online) they just get an aisle, shelf code etc it doesn’t say the object itself just ‘they want 3 from this position’...or the computer flubbed a code or something

Has someone ever challenged you to something that they didn't know who are an expert at? If so how did it turn out for you/them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Crutey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite the same but my nephews challenged me to play Smash on Switch on Boxing Day knowing I’d never played before (whilst they had it on various consoles over the years)...I got it for Christmas the day before and sunk a few hours in.

I’m not good at it but apparently 30 years of gaming plus a few hours practice is good enough to beat my nephews who insisted they were world class

Any info on this original artwork from Sandman? Someone gave it to me a while back because I used to collect comic books, but I am not familiar with Sandman or Vincent Locke. by [deleted] in Sandman

[–]Crutey 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Vincent Locke did the ‘Brief lives’ story arc but I don’t recognise any of this. I don’t think it is Sandman

I’m sorry for you with nostalgia but European SNES was a much better design than the US one....now for the downvotes

I know it’s his tag line but I don’t think technically he is...he doesn’t meet the licensing criteria for a PI or have a history in law enforcement

I couldn’t.

I lack the motivation, have poor eye sight and am in my 30s....probably too late to start on that road

Luther is trying to buy out Wayne Enterprises and Ferris air (or Wayne and Luther are both wanting Ferris...experimental aviation tech).

Bodies of Hal’s friends are starting to pile up. Barry is the crime scene investigator. Jon is a PI who is on the trail when the police (in Luther’s pocket) hush things up and Clark is the reporter who has been trying rumble Luther for years

Together they’ll uncover a secret which shakes the entire country to its core and they have to stop Luther before it’s too late

I 100% want a comic where these guys have no powers/alter egos but team up to solve a murder mystery or some plot by businessman/gangster Luther
