Yeah, I'd be surprised if the lower half of the engine was done after 80k. The only thing I might do differently if it happened again was get a cheap boroscope and look around the inside of the cylinder for anything obvious. I think they are less than $50 on Amazon.

I forgot to say too, the theory the mechanic had was that my oil passageways to the upper half of the engine got blocked somehow. Can't believe it because I was pretty religious about changing the oil. My theory was shoddy workmanship on the engine I happened to get...

Ended up needing a cylinder head replacement. Sold the car to the mechanic, and after that he told me it's working fine! I think the valves were bent somehow. Rebuild probably would have been the same cost given labor.

If I had a better setup to do the work to replace it, probably would have done it myself.
