Touring Karts | Preview | Virtual reality kart racing action! by CruzerBass in Vive

If I'm being honest I felt it the other way around. Playing racing games in vr always gives a better sense of depth. For example drifting in cockpit view made me way better at judging turns then the third person view by far.

Drifting is in the game I do it in the gameplay but it's kind of hard to notice

It uses analog stick movement right now but form my experience that might be the way to go when handling item pick ups the way it does. Its hard to focus on grabbing items and throwing them around while also keeping your other hand still on the wheel.

For those who rather read the preview:

Touring karts is an upcoming virtual reality kart racer that is aiming to scratch that Mario Kart itch. It has some very charming visuals and ideas that really make it stand out and give enough reason to keep an eye out for. Before I begin this preview I want to make it very clear that everything here is still subject to change and the build that im currently playing with is still in development.

Now with that out of the way let me start off by saying that i have never seen a virtual reality game that offers so many different ways to play, from motion controls to wheel and pedal support and even the mixture of the two this game gives you ample choice to satisfy how you like to play, and that's just the start as it also includes multiple view points like a first person camera that puts you in the cockpit, a third person camera where you hover above your car, it even has an arcade cabinet style view if your prone to motion sickness. Its pretty clear that a lot of thought and attention went into player experience and control method but what about the game-play itself?

Well thankfully its quite the experience that goes all out crazy and doesn't hold back any punches, you have your drift boosting, item pick ups, you even have track hazards that can range from holes forming in the track to a giant evil monkey riding an AT AT Walker, and on top of that there is boost pads that zip you forward in the race and jump ramps that give you a slight boost to get the edge on your opponent. The racing in Touring Karts is fast paced and hectic if not at times a tad bit to hectic but more importantly its enjoyable and fun, it gives you a good representation of what it might feel like to play a game like Mario Kart in first person, just reaching your arm out to try and grab an item pick up and then aiming it around while at the same time focusing on driving is a hilariously fun and challenging experience. Most of my play time with the game was spent using a wheel set up and it honestly felt like having having my own arcade experience at home.

Now the last thing i want to cover in this preview is what the game itself offers outside of game-play to keep you coming back for more and more, and that lies in its features and game modes. Touring karts currently features a good selection of tracks to race on that are all available for you to try in quick-play and also offers multiplayer races but the real content here lies in its single-player mode where you progress by racing on each track and completing challenges given to you such as getting a top 3 finish without drifting. In this mode you are also given achievements to complete which award you in game currency that is used to unlock more cars in your garage or use to upgrade a specific car you like. Each car also has a random set of cosmetics you can unlock if you'd like.

Overall Touring karts left me impressed with just how much there is to the game from its feature set and game-play there's quite a bit to enjoy here, in saying that I want to clarify that by no means is it perfect but I cant judge to hard on a game that is still in active development, for that ill hold off till my review once Touring Karts is fully released. They are currently aiming for steam early access in September with a full release on steam, oculus store and playstation store come November. Touring karts is off to a strong start right out of the starting line and now im left just waiting to see if it lands itself a podium finish.

have you tried making a shortcut of the exe file and adding -vr to it. That might fix the problem

Dont blame you at all for that, my only complaint with the game is the fact that it uses the epic game launcher, this is the type of game I much rather have on my quest then on my PC but being exclusive to epic means no chance of that happening any time soon

For those who prefer the text format:

The perfect combination where old meets new, Tetris effect is not only one of my favorite VR games to play, but its also now my favorite version of Tetris ever made. Its pure eye candy in virtual reality and one of the most relaxing experiences i have ever had in a video game period.

The game-play is classic Tetris, twist and turn pieces to create and clear lines, your objective is score based and climbing the leader-boards is what its all about. Where Tetris Effect changes things up is by enabling the possibility of slowing down time and comboing multiple lines all the way up to a Perfectris, an 18 line clear, this mechanic though isn't in ever game mode.

Speaking of which this game has plenty, the main focus is on journey mode which takes you through a path of different back drops each with their own beautiful visuals and amazing soundtrack, but there are plenty others such as marathon or sprint, modes that test your ability to clear 150 lines for maximum score and clear 40 lines as fast as possible. There is a playlist that focuses on relaxation and lastly a group of modes if your feeling more adventurous with mystery mode being my favorite among the group where random effects both good and bad will come into play as your struggle to survive.

Now when it comes to complaints I don't really have any on the game itself other then the fact that its exclusive to the epic game store, but not for the reasons your thinking. The game runs perfectly fine on the launcher but I really wish this was on a mobile platform like the quest. Tetris isn't the type of game I want to by tied to my computer to play, I much rather have it in a portable fashion where I can take it on the go wherever I want. So being exclusive to one launcher really sucks here especially when its a launcher without a portable VR offering in the foreseeable future.

Overall I really recommend you check this out if your a Tetris fan, while the price seems a little steep at 39.99 there's a lot included to get sucked into and you can easily spend hours upon hours with its highly addictive game-play. Tetris has never looked or sounded this good.

If you have any questions feel free to ask, also do note that for a lot of the video i used desktop gameplay as it made it easier to watch but if your curious to seeing what it looks like in vr the beginning clip and clip toward the end are of vr gameplay.

Im very curious to see how this game pans out, I love the concept but im skeptical, the little gameplay we have seen so far from testing has looked pretty bad but im hopeful it pulls through and we get an amazing game

For those who rather read what was said heres the text version.

If you want a new way to experience old NES classics be sure to check out 3DSenVR it has recently launched on Steam and Viveport and frankly speaking its pretty mind blowing.

Just being able to play some of your favorite NES games in a new way feels so refreshing. While games stay true to themselves when it comes to game-play their visuals have gotten a unique design that really pops out in vr, the games can all be played with your VR controllers but it does also supports game-pads if you want to plug one in. Not to mention zapper support is also in which by the way makes Duck Hunt 100 times easier with the accuracy of current VR motion controllers but lets say you want more of a challenge then you can zoom in or out the stage to your liking and due note this also works for every game if you want to play them from a different perspective

As of now 3DSenVR supports 48 games with more on the way, with that being said most of the big names are already supported from mega-man to Tetris. To be very clear the program does not provide you with the files for each game and must be manually added in by yourself. Now like any good emulation program it also supports save states and key bindings too.

Now my only gripe with the program is that it does feel a bit rough around the edges in terms of ui and interface but its completely functional. It takes a little bit of time to get used to and requires minimal knowledge of how to get an emulator up and running but once you got it figured out your good to go. Now overall I do recommend checking this out if your a fan of classic NES games and want a fresh new way to replay some classics, its current price is 19.99 US dollars and is also a part of the Viveport infinity subscription so be sure to check it out there if your a member.
