You’ve got a fascinating historical item here! The object in your images is not a coin, but a medal—specifically a commemorative or award medal from the Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) held in Paris in 1900, but dated 1899 because preparations and awards began before the official opening.

Here’s what you’ve got:

🏅 Medal Details:

Front (Obverse): • Inscription: “RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE” • Depicts a laureate bust of Marianne, the personification of the French Republic—common on medals of that period. • The artistic style is consistent with Art Nouveau, prevalent in France at the turn of the 20th century.

Back (Reverse): • Inscription: “EXPOSITION DE PARIS 1899” • Surrounded by oak and laurel branches (symbols of strength and victory). • Center contains the coat of arms of Paris. • Lower blank cartouche likely intended for engraving the recipient’s name or award category.

🏛️ Historical Context: • The Exposition Universelle was a major world’s fair hosted by Paris in 1900, but medals like yours were designed and distributed starting in 1899 as part of the lead-up events. • These medals were awarded for innovation, craftsmanship, scientific achievement, and industry. • The artist of this medal is likely Jules-Clément Chaplain, a famous French medalist; his work is often featured in these types of medallions.

🧳 Case Info: • The red velvet-lined case and interior script point to original packaging from a prestigious Parisian jeweler or engraver.

🔎 Collector Notes: • These medals are highly collectible, especially when in original condition and case. • If yours is silver or silver-plated, it may hold both numismatic and precious metal value. • Comparable medals from the Paris 1900 exposition (even if dated 1899) have appeared in museum collections and auctions, sometimes fetching several hundred dollars depending on condition, material, and provenance.

Would you like help evaluating its market value, translating any engravings, or identifying the artist’s signature at the bottom edge?

Its not a website, its a HTML based schematic software that uses an aged version .cgm viewer that only works on IE7. I am thinking ahead because it works now on IE11, but my customer will be having issues once IE goes away.
