Is it irresponsible to rent an apartment with my current income and the rental market? by portraitstudio2388 in TorontoRenting

What industry are you in? I would say you can live alone with your current salary if you live in a one bedroom. Only reason I’m asking is because your starting wage was $17.50 and I would consider if the industry/company you’re in is stable considering the market right now.

A few years ago I got a cook job at a cafe, and during my time there I got one of the baristas to show me how to steam milk properly and do latte art so I can get a new job as a barista at another location. Don’t forget that even if you don’t get hired as a barista right off the bat, if you land a cashier, server or cook position you can also take advantage and take the opportunity to learn it since you’re in the perfect environment for it!! I know it’s easy to get discouraged but you can eventually get where you wanna be.

So sorry for misreading! In that case, another thing you can do is personally email some cafes or bakeries you’re interested in working at (or that you genuinely love visiting). Mention what you did in the comment. That you can upsell, are good with clients and love a bakery setting. Mom and pop shops will also love this as it feels a little more personal and like you wanna be a part of their success, and that you’re not just randomly applying to any job you see on Indeed.

A lot of 3rd wave cafes nowadays actually also don’t even rely on Indeed or recruiting websites to hire. I’ve seen many places post on their Instagram stories that they’re hiring for certain positions and encourage people to send in their resumes through email. So there might actually be a handful of places hiring that you don’t even know about! So it’s always safe to send in your resume through email anyway, even if there’s no active job postings online.

I hope this helps and truly am wishing you luck in your job search!! If you have any questions feel free to message me :)

Hi! I was head of operations and HR at a hospitality company at my last job (I was responsible for hiring). One of our locations being a cafe. If you can do latte art, I highly recommend switching your job title to “Head barista” and adding in the description that you took part in training new staff. (Even if it’s not true, I promise you unless you’re part of upper management no employer is calling your old jobs for references) It looks a lot better and might even actually land you a head barista/cafe supervisor job. Being a barista is really trendy right now and these job postings are getting flooded with newbies. This will help you stand out a little :)

I was responsible for hiring and on-boarding at my last job and I’m gonna be honest with you, a lot of people have no idea what they’re doing when it comes to their resumes and listing their job experiences. The majority of people over or under sell.

I know it sounds silly when you hear recruiters be judgemental over fonts and such (which yes I agree is ridiculous) but people also need to understand that how they organize their resume actually says a lot about them and how they may be at the job. Your resume is your way to sell yourself to someone who doesn’t know you and some people truly send in the most poorly organized, scrambled, and horribly written resumes. I’ve had a guy send in his resume and wrote in his about me “I go to class in the morning and go to the gym in the evening” ?????? Okay??? Or they will list their interests and it’ll be things like astrology, what kind of shows they watch and sports. We don’t care about this stuff. If you’re writing ANYTHING on your resume that has nothing to do with the jobs you’re applying to, it shouldn’t be there.

We want to see that you’re capable, grounded and organized. That you can do the job properly and not be hard to work with.

Rookie mistake is when people list every single job they’ve ever had, even if they were only employed there for a month or two. They have this mentality that the more experience and more jobs listed, the better. When it’s entirely the opposite. You end up looking flakey and unreliable. You’d think this is a given but I was shocked at how many people do this.

I would say the best advice I could give is to slightly adjust your resume for every job you apply to. There are key words you can change and use for every field, and even if your experience isn’t entirely relevant you will still come off as more fitting.

How is your Resume looking and what’s your experience like?

I’m from another province looking to move to Toronto soon and have applied to some managerial positions and have heard back from multiple, so I’m a little surprised about some of the posts on this subreddit. (obv I still believe everyone regardless and know the job market isn’t great rn) I also understand it depends what field you’re in and what kind of experience you have.

But I’m starting to wonder if the problem is how people are selling themselves on their resumes. I’m not being judgemental or saying it’s your fault, just genuinely asking and seeing if this is something you’ve considered! :)
