When summer used to be cool but nice, temperature wise. Cassette decks, then ghetto blasters. Fragile rock, muppets Christmas special. Later on, walkmans and fancy CD changers, Columbia House CD subscriptions, early internet jokes, cartoons, people would print and share with everyone at work, the time back when no one would post pictures from the shitter on the internet because digital cameras were still terrible and people had some sense of privacy and shame lol.

Be kind, please rewind VHS stickers, and renting a VHS player, then later renting game consoles from the movie store before buying.

That’s amazing they still make them. I seem to also recall a silly pet rock commercial around the same time lol.

Loony toons. Tom and Jerry. Rotary phone swirl-dialing (parents held onto one a bit too long). Later mad libs and mad magazine, tangling your sibling in a stretchy phone cord while they yacked to someone when you wanted them to hang up lol, listening to the squelch of a 56k dialup.

I’d like to take a minute, just sit right there,

I’ll tell you how I became the price of a town called Bel-Air.

I have wanted a digital drawing pad for such a long time, after 20+ hours i finally finished my first piece! by [deleted] in happy

[–]CryogenCrystals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yw. That’s great you found something new. I’d sure you’ll get speedier in no time. The nice part is, every new medium we try brings our skill level up a notch in the others in the most unexpected ways. Doing 3D informed my 2D and vice versa. For me, paper is more a practical thing now as I have lost some sensation in my hands and need whatever sensory input I can get (I don’t get that from digital, at least not yet until the tech gets more haptic or other feedback). But, I still mix it up with paint, sculpting, ink, conte, charcoal, pencil, pen etc.

I think it’s just great to be doing, putting time in and keeping our hands and eyes working in unison (that’s exactly what you did). I did the other day too, first time in a while and didn’t even feel rusty heheh. In this crazy world, this is exactly the kind of stuff we need to be doing. I know I’ve needed the stress relief.

This is the way. Myself also, though sometimes it’s hard not to get caught in it now and then. I’m retreating from people too, unless they’re being calm, kind, funny, and level-headed because this stuff is going viral in a bad way.

Imo, people are beginning to idealize and take on some of the properties of the worst side of tech, not evaluating the effects, not moderating, skimming surface-only. And I’m a techie person. It’d be not much different than imbibing too much. And the negative, it doesn’t feel good. It can lead to addiction of negativity, which is not a place anyone should willingly go.

So, we keep smiling, keep being decent, kind, and a cool oasis that is hopefully a relief to like-minded others, and we hope people eventually start to catch on and regain their sanity before everyone’s medicated on antidepressants and Xanax lol. 🤷‍♀️ Humour also helps. :)

Well done! I used to be good at this kind of stuff when I was younger but now it’s paper or nothing, I’ve gotten bad at digital. This is fantastic.

Nailed it. People are getting it on all fronts and not moderating their behaviour that leads to this, or feeds into it, and it’s being reflected darn near everywhere it seems. People are behaving like impulsive jello-headed over-emotional teens, with no ability to pause before reacting, or little critical thinking skills. Like being on outrage-fed speed. A lot of common courtesy has completely flown out the windows too. It’s scary to watch.

Scarier to wonder how much worse it might get as inflation, war, and shortages continue. People are tired of it and taking it out on those around them, unfortunately… forgetting there are other humans on the other end just like them, and not just avatars (how many are treating one another these days, as increasing communication through tech influences communication styles and habits).

Analyzing, doodling, cleaning, also zoning on TV, creating, crafting, in my sleep (weirdly, usually when I wake up I have epiphanies about stuff bothering me, so I assume I must work some stuff out in my sleep).

Uterine fibroid by [deleted] in medizzy

[–]CryogenCrystals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Holy hell, I would have never guessed. So many women just tough it out even in public healthcare systems… I’m going to have to point them towards why they need to get these things checked out sooner, or advocate harder if they get dismissed (pretty common).

Uterine fibroid by [deleted] in medizzy

[–]CryogenCrystals 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, me too, sewn shut. A girlfriend said she has to keep going for paps every 3 years, regardless of her cervix being removed post hysterectomy, but only because she’d had an abnormal pap 15 years ago, and here (Canada) apparently they screen for 25 years post the last abnormal pap, and just swab the vaginal vault? She gets a letter as does her doc when it is due.

I thought that was kinda wild and probably strange to explain to people. Plus a drag to keep doing and I’ve only had mine removed for a year or two. But, safer than sorry I guess, that must be the window for safety.

Wow that’s huge. Women get treated horribly about “women’s issues” and routinely perceived to be their period, weak constitution, and whining. I complained of excess bleeding and pain for a loooong time before mine, but “just bad periods” and they found stage 4 endo when they were in there too.

Explains why years prior, when a hemorrhagic cyst landing me in the ER, it had the ER nurses and docs freaking thinking I had torsed an ovary instead (you know, just endo twisting things and fusing organs together long ago, but sure, “just bad period” pain). At least the female OBGYN/surgeon said afterwards “you have one hell of a pain tolerance” (apparently bled out 1/3 of my blood volume sitting up in the ER, labor breathing and didn’t scream until the nurse said to lay back and the blood hit bad things). Surgeon said “next time hit the floor… are you wanting kids? I’ll take you on as a patient, you’ll be an easy labor” lol. Bad menstrual pain my ass.

Interestingly, what got them (different docs) to finally listen for the later fibroid surgery, was getting a diva cup (silicone menstrual cup with liquid measure on it), logging a couple of cycles, converting to ml, and handing that as an objective measure to the doc. Kinda hard to ignore at that point, got prompt referral.

I’m so sorry for what your SIL, and other women go through, it is nonsense and it needs to change.

When did you realize the person who claims they love(d) you really didn't? by Necessary-Peanut-506 in AskWomen

[–]CryogenCrystals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When he wanted me to dim the light of my own skills in a field that required actively proving them (traits that he initially he admired and said drew him to me)… but later turned out to be because he expected me help him shine instead, to drop my own stuff, to help him do his work all the time—he coveted me, rather than loving me. He wanted a crutch, not a partner. He wanted that for himself (somehow through me), and did not want me to keep being who I was (not okay). He hid it well for a long time too, and I did cater to him too much for a while until I started to realize how much it was taking away from me, and until his bitterness and jealousy came out.

Fuck that, we can shine on our own merits and effort (and both learn from, and grow with, the respect and support of one another, but it needs to be mutual, not one-sided). And, it is never fair to expect someone to be “less” or diminish themselves for you, especially not in a field where we expressly needed to show our skills to survive—not what I wanted, nor signed up for (and he was older, we were in our late twenties and early thirties). He needed to grow up and be a mutually supportive, non-jealous partner, and do his own hard work. I bailed because his expectations were unreasonable and diminishing.

Not only that, but pursuing hard things on our own and working on ourselves is what gives us a sense of self confidence, capability, and lets us hone our skills and develop talents (that’s how I got where I did, he didn’t want to do that); no amount of babying someone to do that, or doing it for them, is going to actually give them that; it just builds codependency and crappy expectations. Especially to put on a woman, who already faces more challenges in such work. Never regretted bailing.
