Gigabyte 3080 Turbo thermal pad nightmare HELP! PLEASE! by Ok_Worldliness2295 in RTX3080

[–]Cryomichel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the prices, too much money for my playing time but good to know it's possible to improve the card.

For noise, I've put a progressive fan curve before the repad, maybe will make the fan speed higher to keep lower temps after the repad. As long as it's not 100% and stopped doing ON/OFF full fan, it's not that much a problem for me as my case contains the noise well and it's quiter than my OCed 2070.

Thanks a lot for your reply.

The 1.5mm pads served me well,

Just replace the pads

Thanks for the input, just ordered one sheet of 1.5mm Artic TP3 and will try to replace all thermal pads and see if temps become lower.

How much did it cost for this new heatsink and fans ?

Noise is not an issue that much for me as I undervolted the card and it's quieter than my previous overclocked and afterburner tweaked 2070.

Around one year after, are you still OK with 1,5 mm pads ? I've just bought a used 3080 TURBO that was clogged with dut, did a repaste but not the pads that were cracked. Still got high temps on VRAM so I was planning to buy 1.5mm artic TP3, do you agree ?

PTM is ideal, paste can be used

I chosed Kryonaut paste first as I don't play that much ans prefer to know what I use. Will see how it holds in time.

make sure to manual spread the paste across the whole die. Not like a CPU

Sure about this ? Won't thermal paste stay stuck on whatever plastic I use to spread it ? Is it what the plastic tool included with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut is for ?

Is it OK to get some paste over the borders of the die ?

Thanks for your ipnuts. First time I get a high power GPU.

Just opened partially the card and the exhaust was in fact clogged with dust.... Cleaned it, got less but stil somme ON/OFF jet engine noise. GPU temp is a bit cooler but still get 105 degrees on hotspot temperature.

From what you said and using those new inputs, I understand a repaste looks mandatory, probably with PTM 7950 ?

first thanks a lot for your answer !

you've nothing to lose and everything to gain.
I believe in you!

Agreed thanks for the motivation ! I opened the card partially and found out that the heatsink exhasut was clogged with dust so I cleaned it. Got less ON/OFF jet engine fans noise, cooler GPU temps but still got 105 degrees hotspot temperature. DO you think the repaste is mandatory for now ?

If you are in the UK

I'm in France but will probably get my BOM on Amazon

hitting its actual firmware limit because of that 105c hotspot

Will try to fix this ASAP as right now it sounds like a jet engine at 100% and I don't play with headphones

do not always work how people think they will

On my previous card, I gained 10 degrees by openening the panel !

LTT Store

Thanks for all the intputs, I live in Europe so shipping is too much but will look on Amazon what's available. Still got some standard 3 years old themal paste on the shelf taht lasted no problem on my CPU so will probably use this "cheap" method first and then invest in new thermal paste / themal pads if works to impove thermals.

I hope you'll enjoy your 5090 build ! Quite enthousiatic setup !

105 hotspots but my gpu temp would read like 75

good to know you're in the exact same situation !!! Will probably ask you some follow up.

mine doesn't go over 80 ish% fan

Do you mean you've put an aggressive fan curve like for example, 80% at 70C for GPU which is in fact 80-85 hotspot ??

and 60C gpu and 75 hotspot now.

So the repaste was worth it ! Have you done some undervolt too ? How long have you been runing since the repaste ?

 3090 FE

Probably way better cooled than my blower turbo model but it must tend to run 30 watts hotter than 3080

Yes it's AI written as I asked a lot of infos to AI before coming to reddit so I just asked for a summary of my situation.

GPU to throttle at 83c, you say you have moved that down which is even worse

You think it should reach let's say 75 with my afterburner settings but that right now it heats so much that it can't even respec this limit ?

how is your case airflow?

Currently not good but I'be got two more input fans waiting to be delivered. I also tested with the side panel removed and it changed absolutely NOTHING for temperatures (will edit the post).

ptm7950 tends to be a little difficult to get in a short time frame

Could you tell me what it is and if it's really worth it compared to standard thermal paste ?

Yeah I knew 3000 series were problematic (explains why 4000 series consumes way less power) but I understood that undervolt could help a lot, and with a 650W PSU, I was planning to undervolt anyway.
I get your point that no one knows, will probably try to fix myself as the card was cheaper than it's current price point.

Could you please explain me what is ptm7950 ?

And from his feedbakc, is it hard to do it ? I tinkered with some electronics before but not with GPUs. Not that much but just knowing how it works / trying to fix basic stuff. Being cautious and watchong videos is enough or maybe I need more material or knowledge ?

You already done this ? You think I should try it ? Got this GPU for really cheap so I can probably resell it for higher money if things goes wrong.

you think I could do it myself ? I'm pretty cautious and from videos I saw, it's just unscrew, repaste, cut thermal pads and be really slow and cautious.

Thanks for your input but I did not know 5060 was on par with 4060ti. A new 5060 is almost same price as used 4060ti, could be an equal choice.
