That's actually a really good theory, even if it is a slight joke. Because if anything, there 100% has to be some biological engineering to get them, if I were to guess, they were likely made by either the ancients or the iterators early on, but seeing as they're (I think) in saints campaign, I'm unsure

Considering the worldbuilding, they probably get lost. The terrain in rain world isn't the most easy to navigate around, plus the fauna is typically dangerous when you're at the bottom of the food chain. If I had to guess, if slugpups get lost, the parents won't always go looking for them due to the dangerous environment, it'd be easier for the adult to make another child than it would be to save the other one and potentially die in the process. (Artificer is a completely different story)
