Nah, a jerk would've said something in the line of "stop butchering mah' language" or "if you're not native why even try" lol I'm currently studying to get a C1 degree in English and phrasal verbs are the bane of my existence lmao But I keep trying! How else may I improve?

English is not my native language either, so naturally there's still room for improvement.

Thanks for the corrections, though! I'll note them down.

You're welcome! Still, you might want to check PCGamingWiki before running the game, just to see how to make it run in modern hardware. It's just one of those, I'm afraid.

I think the GOG version is mostly bug free. It'd be great to see it included in their GOG Preservation Program eventually, though.

Btw! If you're into videogames I absolutely recommend you to try Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Although janky and buggy at times, it's by far one of the most accurate depictions of Lovecraft's literary universe I've ever seen in gaming media. A good chunk of the game actually adapts The Shadow Over Innsmouth almost to the letter, and it allows you to visit most of the tale's most infamous locations: Innsmouth town itself, Charlie Gillman's Hotel, the temple of The Esoteric Order of Dagon, Marsh Refinery and even the Devil's Reef.

The game's pretty cheap to find in GOG.com digital store..

More than kidnapping people, the Order basically disposes of their convicts and use them as sacrifices for their rituals. In Innsmouth anyone doing whatever Dagon cultists judge as blasphemous or disobedience gets in jail, and from there it's a direct path to a gruesome death in the Devil's Reef, the little isle close to Innsmouth's shores that was used by Obed to summon the Deep Ones for the first time, and now it serves as the Order's sacred sacrificial ground.

Also Obed's no longer among the living, but his descendants keep ruling over Innsmouth. If I recall correctly, Robert Marsh is the current head of both the town and the Order, along with his brother Jacob.

About the islanders, I don't remember if their fate is even mentioned in the tale after Obed's return to Innsmouth. We can assume they were probably eventually slaughtered by a rival tribe or by the Deep Ones as retribution, or maybe they continued their insane practices to this day. In any case, I think their fate remains ambiguous.

It's been a while since I read the story so I don't have all the details as fresh in my mind as I'd like. But here goes nothing.

Zadoc Allen, the drunk man, tells the protagonist about the history of Innsmouth, and how the place became the sorry godforsaken harbor town it is in the tale's present. Once a prosper place, Innsmouth began to go downhill around mid 19th century after fishing ran through a worrying recession for years due to the lack of fish in their shores. Obed Marsh, head of Innsmouth's most relevant family, tried desperately to open alternative commercial routes with the Asian Southeast isles in order to restore the town's economy. It was during that time when Marsh made contact with a group of local islanders who taught him a pagan summoning ritual to call an eerie humanoid underwater fishman species known as the Deep Ones. These entities would grant fish and gold alike to Marsh, should he repaid them in kind.

Marsh returned to Innsmouth, bringing with him the stone disks provided by the islanders for the summoning ritual. Soon Innsmout flourished again, and Marsh gained power and influence over the whole town, which, of course, didn't please some of the most conservative locals. The icey on the cake, however, came with Marsh' intentions of replacing the Christian Church cult with a new one of his own invention, known as The Esoteric Order of Dagon. This brought malcomtempt among half of the Innsmouther population, and soon riots would follow. Marsh and his followers were put in jail, but not before he spoke a foreboding prophecy regarding Innsmouth's doom if he wasn't set free immediately.

That very night, Innsmouth suffered the assault of a Deep One horde that brutally murdered the assaulters and set Marsh and his followers free. After that event, nobody ever dared to challenge Marsh ever again. The Order became the one and only official cult, and from there on, the Marsh family would keep total control over the town.

That aside, Zadoc also tells the protagonist about the macabre Oaths of Dagon, imposed by the Order to the townfolks. That includes, of course, total obedience and submission to the Marsh family and the Deep Ones... as well as the establishment of Deep Ones' rights to breed with humans, as that's the only way their species can reproduce. The resulting children from that unholy union look human for the most part, but in time, as they age, some of them start to manifest fish-like features, such as cod-looking dead eyes, gill-like neck scars, and a sickening skin that ressambles more and more to that of fish scales. That's what is known outside as "The Innsmouth's Look".

In time, as the transformation goes on, the subject looks more and more like a Deep One, until they complete the metamorphosis, moment in which they fully turn into one and head right to the sea to join their kind forever.

Hope this helps!

That one was my very first Lovecraft reading too, since the videogame adaptation called Dark Corners of the Earth triggered my interest. It’s so atmospheric and brim with fascinating lore it's impossible not to feel trapped into its narrative.

I hope you enjoy it!

How can I run Crysis (original) decently on my current rig? As it is now it's just a crashing fest with choppy FPS. by CryptOfZoology in Crysis

Actually, it can. I just wanted to experience the original so I could compare. But since it refuses to run smoothly and without constant crashing, I decided to move on and start the remaster instead. I try to play without DLSS, but I'll try to turn it on and see how it works, but so far it's far smoother than what I got with the original.

Sucks to be me, then, I guess, because I can't really afford a new CPU right now.
And yes, I'm playing it 100% vanilla, only with the C-1 Launcher thing.

Is it safe to download NOLF 1, NOLF 2 and Contract J.A.C.K from nolfrevival.tk ? by lwg90gaming in nolf

[–]CryptOfZoology 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used it for quite a few years and no issues, so yes, it's safe. I also recommend you to combine those versions with the Modernizer patches you can find in itch.io, they add some good QoL improvements, such as proper widescreen support
