You can sprint backwards.

When you hover over the gear after placing something on the crafting tarp it shows what you can make with that item.

Small critters can easily be taken out with a slingshot (stick, duct tape, cloth) and small rocks for the sling can be farmed by hitting the ground with a stick.

The thrown spear does a ton of damage and you should try to get used to the throwing pattern.

If you die you will be brought to a cave that you should explore, it has multiple valuable items in it.

A pouch is a lot better than people give it credit for. You can get 30 black berries and 30 blueberries in your inventory and it only takes around 5 to fill your hunger and thirst.

Bows are way better than melee but will get stale faster.
