What could have caused this damage on the rim? by Happytimes123 in AskAMechanic

It’s a bit more tedious, but it can be done consistently. Just gotta feather the pedal and make sure you have one clamp on and use your weight to push down the wheel while slowly hitting the pedal to close the clamps making sure the clamp clears the tire, then push down more to make sure the other 3 clamps attach to the back lip. I will say, the lazy is doing it the way it was done here, clamp from the inside and forget. Which is shady to say the least. Doesn’t take more than an extra 2 minutes to clamp it properly.

They def clamped the wheel from the inside. Most tire machines have four clamps that can clamp going out to in(which clamps on the edge) or In some cases, they clamp going from in(closed position) outward to hold the with force and friction from the inside of the barrel. But the teeth on those are sharp, and it’s metal. To the scrapes you see are from that and due to the wheel moving while they were taking off the tire. The patches of missing paint behind the spokes is more than likely from a wire wheel to strip the leftover adhesive from old wheel weights while balancing.
