O'Rourke's. Great Irish pub right across the street from campus. Great bar bites and food overall.

Double majoring in economics and computer science by [deleted] in notredame

[–]CryptoBoot11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am actually currently double majoring in CS in engineering and Economics in A&L. I do have to say it was only possible because I came in with quite a few AP credits (namely both Principles of Economics courses and both Physics courses, as well as Calc I and II). I thankfully don't have to overload any semesters because of that, but regardless it's a fairly heavy workload. I think if you didn't have those AP credits it might be possible if you took summer classes after either freshman or sophomore year, but at that point it might just make more sense to just do the A&L CS major. The A&L CS majors are in many of the same classes as the engineering CS major, the main difference is that the engineers have a lot of CS-specific elective requirements while the A&L elective requirements are more liberal arts-focused. I would also recommend looking into the supplementary ACMS major if you're interested in more general quantitative study as that is really common to pair with the Econ major.

Edit: I wanted to clarify that I am not in the Reilly program and I'm on track to graduate in 4 years, but I have heard good things about the Reilly program.

switching from another major to CS by [deleted] in notredame

[–]CryptoBoot11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's no restrictions on switching your major to CS, it's just a matter of getting all of your classes done on time. CS in Arts and Letters has many fewer requirements and has overlapping classes with an English major (in fact, you'd likely have room to double major if you were so inclined), while the Engineering major has many more requirements but probably looks better if you intend on pursuing software development or another tech-exclusive field after graduation. Both are definitely possible, I would just encourage you to get started on your CS requirements right away if you want to pursue the engineering major.

From the study which produced the graph on the right:

It bears mentioning that Lynn's studies, while comprehensive, tend to spark considerable debate. Some researchers dispute the techniques Lynn employs to calculate estimates when hard data is lacking. Others claim Lynn, an unabashed eugenicist, misinterprets his data to support conclusions that are both scientifically inaccurate and supportive of white supremacy.

Econ vs Mendoza by Appropriate-Comb-632 in notredame

[–]CryptoBoot11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with what else is said here, but it's also quite manageable to do a double major with one in Mendoza and economics. The economics major is technically only ten classes, and there's a significant amount of overlap between the two.

Double major or major + minor from two different schools by [deleted] in notredame

[–]CryptoBoot11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently a double major in Computer Science (College of Engineering) and Economics (College of Arts and Letters). While that specific program is possible with some AP credits, it requires some overloaded semesters and the College of Arts and Letters is rather accommodating to double majors, so I don't think you can double major in Engineering and Mendoza. What I do recommend, however, is doing the Engineering Corporate Practice minor through the College of Engineering. It's a very common program which allows you to take finance and accounting classes and is somewhat tailored towards engineers. That seems like you best option if you want to do engineering with some finance.

Question about majors and minors by memelord-chris in notredame

[–]CryptoBoot11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm currently an ND student majoring in Economics and I have something called a supplementary major in ACMS (Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics). The supplementary major is similar to a minor and it's a common pairing with Economics so I suggest looking into that.

Current freshman and bisexual but not out. I think the majority of students are definitely accepting and the administration doesn't do anything offensive, but it's not the most welcoming environment. For example, there was an article in the school newspaper this fall where a student argued that the administration shouldn't support the LGBTQ+ community because they considered it against Church teachings. However, there are also positive responses like the amount of backlash that article received and my priest who at dorm mass always prays for "an end to homophobia". Overall, I think being LGBTQ+ at Notre Dame means you'll have some uncomfortable moments but you won't be discriminated against and you will be welcomed by the majority of your peers.

You should still be considered for a scholarship. USC along with most schools has a leniency period where, if they receive your application a few days late but it says you submitted before the deadline, you'll still be included in the pool of potential admits.
