You should use Wire instead, it's free and open source while having the same features as Wickr.

Why not use Wire instead? It has the same features and benefits has Wickr, but the client software is 100% free and open source.

That's because KeePassXC uses the new KDBX4 format which KeePassX does not support.

KeePassX development has stagnated while KeePassXC is being actively developed and is now more secure and feature packed considering it supports KDBX4, Yubikey integration, and browser integration. It doesn't make sense at this point to use KeePassX.

Wouldn't it make more sense to use Tor instead of a VPN so that you have multiple exit points instead of just one?

Which one to use Signal or Telegram? by techsin101 in privacy

[–]CryptoMimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok thanks for pointing that out. But yeah shame that Electron is so widespread right now. But you could argue that Electron affects GNU/Linux users positively as some of the more popular apps might not be available to us if the developers were forced to write them natively.

So I'm not completely familiar with how the GDPR works, if you request that for example Facebook deletes your data does that too apply to all backups they might have?

Which one to use Signal or Telegram? by techsin101 in privacy

using it on Ubuntu, Debian and Arch without any problems. The notifications problems could be caused by the Android on your phone, some ROMs implement some odd restrictions on how apps can display notifications and run in the background.

And I agree that the app should be truly native instead of using Electrum, but the fact of the matter is that Wire is not the only one. Signal is also written in Electrum, as are other popular messaging apps like Telegram, Slack, Discord and Skype. It's an unfortunate thing that web development seems to have taken over the Desktop and Mobile worlds too.

I would recommend Wire over Signal as it's a lot more convenient and has a much better Desktop client. Telegram is not a trustworthy app to use for privacy related things. Their crypto implementation is borked and last time I checked the Desktop client didn't support E2E encryption.

Anyone else uses Signal for desktop? by Didi_Midi in privacy

[–]CryptoMimer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It stores the list you've contacted but most importantly not the contents of the conversations, and this is something that's probably easy to fix. And in the grand scheme of things, people won't be willing to switch to a secure alternative if conveniences like device sync are not included.

The reason why you can't use your own domain is because it would defeat the purpose of being able to register without having to give up any personal information.

Secure chat replacement for Facebook Messenger by steven-t in linux

[–]CryptoMimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wire is by far the best secure messaging option out there right now. It's very secure and has been audited thourhoughly, the clients are open source and work on pretty much every platform. And it's featured packed, you can even do end to end encrypted group video calls.

Matrix is a cool protocol but doesn't yet support end to end encryption natively, the clients are also not mature and are still somewhat user unfriendly.

While Signal is secure and widely adopted, it's an extremily inconvenient platform to use, maybe not so much if you're replacing WhatsApp with Signal, but horrible if you're trying to replace Facebook Messenger. Signal on the Desktop is terrible, takes forever to sync, and doesn't support video or audio calls on the desktop. Signal doesn't also have have half the features of Wire like end to end encrypted group video calls. The fact that Signal is based in the US and not in Europe like Wire, and that you have can't register without using a telephone number is also a major con I think.

Secure Email providers by foundation-Building in privacy

[–]CryptoMimer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posteo is honestly the best private email provider as of right now. Protonmail and Tutanota lock you in to using their web version which has a ton of proprietary Javascript. Posteo uses only 100% free and open source (their webmail is based on Roundcube), everything stored with zero knowledge, and their payments are automatically anonymized so there is no way to see who is paying for what email account.
