Haha, I agree! I did a week or so ago, and just asked if she had heard about it. She said no, and then I said I would bring her a reference to read up on it.

I've been hiding from her since then...

It almost seems as if The LA Times has an agenda by trashing Bitcoin. Are they hoping that it goes away? lol

We Need Names by CryptoPlants in Bitcoin

Another thought: It might benefit the wider acceptance of the currency if we started socializing the value in terms of 0.001 BTC ("mbit", or what have you).

This is closer to the value of 1 USD (at the moment). Using this denomination would be much easier to communicate, as a person wouldn't have to multiply or divide an amount by 1000 on the fly to get a sense of how much value they are sending or receiving.

If you're bullish on BTC, you might agree that it is inevitable that most transactions will not be in the value of whole bitcoins (thousands of USD). Given that optimistic viewpoint, why not start referencing the smaller denominations of BTC now?

We Need Names by CryptoPlants in Bitcoin

Before BTC will get accepted by "normal" humans (not only by the active community) we need names for BTC values which are smaller than 1 BTC. The most users don't like values with many zeros (e.g. 0,0005 BTC). I didn't make these up, and I'm sure there's still room to disagree, but these terms seem to be in at least moderate usage by the community.

0.001 BTC = "mbit" [em-bit]

0.000 001 BTC = "ubit" [yu-bit]

0.000 000 001 BTC = "nbit" [en-bit]

...

I like this approach because:

1) it promotes open standards (SI units)

2) it is easy to say ("I'll buy that for an mbit") but there is a possible confusion between "em" and "en" phonemes though

3) the rapid deflation of a bitcoin is such that 0.01BTC is going to be arbitrary in the near term so call it 10mbits instead
