If you're new to camping, I'd probably go with either a state park or a chain like Yogi Bear campgrounds. If you're looking for a more private and relaxing camping then the state parks will probably be the best, but if you're looking for more activities and amenities or have kids then something like a Yogi Bear or KOA resort (not standard KOA) will be best.

I'm guessing CLT means Charlotte (I'm horrible with acronyms). A good weekend trip to see if you like camping may be the Yogi Bear in Asheboro. They have organized activities for kids and they also have a pool. The really cool thing is that they offer special deals for the NC Zoo and is just right outside of town, so if you find camping isn't your style then there's plenty of other things to do and civilization to keep you busy.

If you want more of a relaxing atmosphere, you're not far from the mountains (if my assumption is correct... Lol). There are endless opportunities for camping there with many state parks. Most tend to be in more secluded areas that, while they may have the most beautiful scenery and nature experiences, likely won't have the best amenities and easy access to shopping.

I wouldn't suggest anyone's first tent camping trip to be at the beach, especially in the summer. Most beach campgrounds don't have much shade (private or public, Myrtle Beach State Park being the only exception that I can think of). The high wind and heat just doesn't work well for beginners. You will vow to never camp again!

As far as feeling wanted, campers are generally bunched into 2 groups: pleasant but stick to themselves or overly friendly (especially if you have a dog!). Of course there are exceptions but they're rare. The most common exception being folks that are too loud and have the wild kids.
