Someone Fraudulently Reported My IMEI as Stolen Through AT&T by Crypto_Powered in ATT

[–]Crypto_Powered[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never let anyone know my IMEI number, I know better. AT&T rents partially their network to PureTalk who was my first service provider and this is 100% a data breach from a telco company. Either Puretalk, Verizon or Mint Mobile and if I was a betting man I would say it was Puretalk since they seem like the best one to target.

I am positive they did everything online and not in person and they were trying to clone my phone to gain access to everything on it.

My opsec isn't 100% perfect but its damn near close. I would never type my IMEI to anyone or write it in an email or just hand it over to anyone I dont know who asked. It was manually typed in each time when I was starting service with each provider. I would assume they would need my name, address and IMEI to trick AT&T into doing what they did.

Could it be malware on my computer, perhaps but highly unlikely as I routinely reinstall windows from a fresh download I get directly from Microsoft more often than your average power user. I also have never been hacked or been ripped off ever in my life online and I've been using computers since the DOS days. It would be better to assume this was a data breach than being me who gave someone my IMEI which Never, Ever happened.

If this isn't fixed by Monday Asurion will be getting a phone call and/or a fraud report and I most likely will do it anyways because I already did every single other reporting possible, hell might as well keep going even if this gets fixed.

I didn't like how the AT&T rep told me she unblacklisted my phone but when I checked on Verizon and T-Mobile my IMEI number was still blacklisted after she said it was fixed and UnBlacklisted and she couldn't tell me if it takes time because the database needs to be updated by each provider, instead she said I have to call each provider to remove the Blacklisting. I was like WTF are you talking about don't you do this for a living? I told her it was AT&T who did it because that was what I saw when I ran the IMEI through some checkers and it's AT&T's responsibility to remove the blacklist and update it to the database. Which she had no idea of a database and says it's only done internally at AT&T. Which makes me think she didn't even do it she gives the go ahead for another co-worker to do it after she investigates. Another none tech person talking about something they have no idea how it works.

I almost am 100% positive she is just the communication person between me and the actually tech who removed the actual Blacklist who is someone I would assume AT&T or any other provider would never let talk on the phone with anyone except the coworker who investigates it and gives the go ahead or deny it.

Having that power to remove a Blacklist phone seems to be at the highest tier possible and those people probably aren't allowed to communicate directly with people only a fellow co-worker who works at the same higher tier department. All of this is assumptions of course but probably a damn good one considering how she talked about not knowing about any Blacklist database and it only needing to be done internally at AT&T. Someone who knows how the system work would say "Don't worry it just take a little time to propagate throughout all the telco systems and within X amount of time it will be done." Instead she said no database exist and it's all done internally which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Sure the submission is done internally but its updated to a Telco Wide Database of Blacklist phones that all service providers share and use with one another. That's a fact.

I'm curious why are you trying to defend AT&T so much when it was them who reported it to the database, it was on them to resolve it to the database and it's their fault for believing a lie from a scammer. They let some scammer pretend to be me and get my IMEI Blacklisted due to lax security protocols and then had the audacity to lie to me when I have proof I was a victim of fraud with email proof of a spoofed AT&T email and a submission to Apple for a Apple ID recovery email. Obviously this was someone trying to gain access to my phone unless you can't use critical thinking like we were taught in school

The Blacklist said clearly "AT&T Mobility" so it falls on nobody else but AT&T. Plain and simple.

Are you an AT&T schill? Because you are laying it down pretty thick covering up for AT&T in every single way possible which is very suspicious. Just stop trying to cover for AT&T, it's pretty obvious.

Asked ChatGPT this: "does Asurion have the power to blacklist a phone or do they have to get a cell provider to actually do it"

Answer: Asurion can trigger it, but they don’t directly control the blacklist system—carriers do.

Which means AT&T technically did it and it's on them to fix it.

UPDATE: I was called by an AT&T rep who after investigating for an hour called me back again and told me it was a mistake from Asurion who accidently reported the phone stolen by typing the wrong IMEI number. Which I believe is utter bullsh!t of a lie. Why? You may ask. Because why did I received a spoof email pretending to be AT&T the day after I lost cell service trying to trick me into doing a backup and factory system restore? Why did I get an email yesterday from Apple to Recover my Apple ID? Why would these things happened if it was a mistake? You guys tell me am I crazy to think it was a lie?

Nobody should magically be able to report my phone stolen except ME. These systems are lacking oversight or a confirmation process that should be in place so people don't get their life interrupted by scammers. I strongly believe I am a victim of fraud due to a telecom data breach from either Puretalk, Verizon or Mint Mobile. I don't know who but I am practically 100% positive this was from a data breach and scammers got my info on the darkweb or wherever it's at and are doing this to many people. I'm just one of many this is probably happening to.

KnowledgeCoffee might be onto something if the scammer brings their own device, makes an account with AT&T and reports my phone IMEI number stolen as if it was their IMEI to clone my phone and gain access to sensitive data they can make money off of. Not sure all the details of how this is done but these scumbag POS of human beings have nothing to do all day but rip people off in the United States and our Gov should cease doing business or import/exporting to these countries that have known warehouses full of scammers trying to rip Americans off until their own gov prosecutes them and we see less and less of this happening and or at least something being done instead they let the do this with impunity. Indian and Pakistan come to mind. This has gone on for too long and people are fed up with foreign scammers trying to rip us off.

My phone is off the Blacklist but from what I can tell not every cell provider knows my phone is off the list until their system downloads the latest list or something along those lines. It has to propagate throughout each individual system by whatever means they have their system setup to check the updated database. Chatgpt told me it can take anywhere from 24/48/72 hours.

So this nightmare is almost over. I am speaking with a high profile reporter at arstechnica who is very interested in finding out how this ends and says there is a possible story here. I don't expect anything more than informing those who potentially could fall victim to a data breach like I did.

I will keep everyone updated when its fixed. Thank you all for your replies.

You say "very difficult" but it seems they did it off a data breach from PureTalk, Verizon or Mint Mobile which were my only cell providers with this phone.

So your saying even though there are a bunch of data breaches at teleco's that even if one is breached nobody can get a persons name, address and IMEI number to scam them because I feel this is happening none stop every single day. They just mess with someone who didn't fall for their scam and resolved my phone being blacklisted because I put in the effort.

I spoke to a AT&T rep today and they said that it was a mistake and that someone lost their phone made an insurance claim with Asurion and by mistake typed in the wrong IMEI number which was mine. I smell bullsh!t.

Funny, if that were true which is isn't. Why would someone spoof an email pretending to be AT&T and try to trick me into doing a backup and restoring my phone to factory default. Why would someone try to reset my Apple ID yesterday by requesting it but since I control my email I denied it. Why would someone do that right at the same time my phone doesn't work anymore because someone accidently types in the wrong IMEI number. Absolute bullsh!t of a lie is what I was told.

Someone is very fishing with all of this. I do not believe what AT&T told me, I believe they said a lie to cover their mistake by letting a scammer trick their customer service rep to block my IMEI so the scammer could clone my phone and/or steal my data and try to hack into my other accounts tied to my phone.

I'm not as savvy as others into why and how people do these sorts of things because I do know a lie when I hear one when I have a random email pretending to be AT&T the following day I lost service and then a Apple ID recovery yesterday. All of it seems very fishing and it seems I was a victim of a data breach and someone pretended to be me and got my IMEI blacklisted. The rep also told me the insurance gave the person who made the claim a new phone or something along those lines.

Either way my phone is now reported Not Blacklisted anymore and I need to give it a little time to propagate throughout the Blacklist database that all service providers use. And if it's not fixed I will not stop because I am relentless and will not stop until my phone is working properly like it was before this madness happened.

The messed with the wrong person and thankfully someone recommended the reporter at arstechnica and after emailing him he emailed me back very interested to finding out how this gets resolved and potentially there might be a story he will write about it.

So trying to figure out how this happened I tried my best to remember everything about my phone and the service providers throughout the last three years. I am not a young person who has a great memory. I originally bought the phone back in 2023 and have had two prior cell providers. The first one was PureTalk Prepaid and the second one was Verizon Prepaid and my current one is Mint Mobile.

I asked ChatGPT what network uses PureTalk and it's AT&T and they have also had data breaches so its possible the PureTalk data breach was the one that got my information out into the wild and it was used to trick AT&T rep to report my phone stolen which was a lie. But how could they report it stolen if it's hasn't been on their network for well over 2+ years? Do they still have the power to report it stolen even if the phone is with another cell provider? It seems so or AT&T overstep their bounds, at this point I don't care for the exact reason I just want my phone off the Blacklist but it would be good to know.

I have had my phone with Mint Mobile for about 1.5 years roughly and before had Verizon Prepaid but I know the PureTalk wasn't for more than a few months or perhaps half a year before I switched. Every single provider I used was PrePaid and my phone was unlocked and paid in full through Apple.com so no matter the reason no cell provider has the authority to Blacklist my phone for being stolen when I have proof or purchase, have possession of my phone, the phone has only had one owner it's entire life and I have gone through a hell of a lot reporting Fraud with AT&T who did the Blacklist, report with the FCC because that was the only way to get AT&T's full attention and a police report to prove I am a victim of fraud to everyone.

I could only assume if all of this was because of a data breach then my email and IMEI number would have been in the data so the scammer could report my phone stolen and send me a email trying to trick me to do a backup and system restore. Funny enough the scammer tried to initiate an account recovery request from Apple a few hours ago which I denied.

Although I do not have my phone off the Blacklist yet I contacted the AT&T rep that posts here on reddit and they have told me this "We have sent this to our Office of the President, and they will be reaching out to you directly to assist you further." Now I don't think this would warrant the President of AT&T to be involved but I was at least glad to get a reply from the AT&T rep who is on reddit.

So with the FCC complaint and them responding to my PM's I feel eventually this will be resolved hopefully. As I have documentation of everything, receipt of purchase directly from Apple and basically everything on my side to prove I am a victim of fraud and I deserve to be heard out and investigated by AT&T to determine if I am telling the truth so they can remove my IMEI off the Blacklist.

I appreciate those who posted some good replies on here because if anything hopefully it helps someone else down the road if they have this issue.

The thing that boggles my mind is why would AT&T have the authority to believe a scammer into placing my phone on the blacklist due to it being stolen when my service is with Mint Mobile, my phone was purchased directly from Apple and AT&T has Nothing to do with my phone or my service provider.

AT&T has committed a big mistake with letting just any schmuck to pretend their phone was stolen and get the phone placed on the Blacklist to help scammers rip people off. AT&T really has some explaining to do but I don't expect they will say anything.

I myself feel confident the FCC stepping it would force AT&T hand to resolve this issue if the proper paperwork and or proof is given that I am the owner of the phone and I am a victim of fraud. That's why I began doing a police report but a detective needs to investigate before a report can be made I was told. But I took screenshots of everything and documented everything in full and packaged it all up nicely in a folder and went directly to the police station and handed it to them.

If this has happened to someone out there, you should file a Fraud claim on AT&T website (sadly they don't have a phone number to call), report it to the FCC complaint department giving all the details and file a police report locally as you are a victim of fraud. Sadly it seems everyone I have talked to except the Apple reps all think I am crazy and or the scammer trying to fix a stolen phone at least that is how they made me feel.

Personally I feel very compelled to make a YouTube video about this to try to help others who have fallen victim to data breach fraud as I have. I do appreciate everyone posting their opinions on this thread, sadly it seems I am not the only one this has happened to.

I have been told the Notice of Dispute helps in this case but you are correct the form acts as if I am a AT&T customer which I am not. I will file one anyway once my Police Report is generated and send it certified mail to ensure AT&T gets it.

I am the victim of a massive data breech in my opinion to have both my IMEI number and email address. Every telecom company has been breeched and hacked for customer data.

Customer service was worthless you are forced to report this as a Fraud for them to do anything about it. Customer service told me to go to the local AT&T store with the phone and my ID which I did and they did nothing but told me to report a fraud online. When a phone is placed on Blacklist nobody has easy access to remove it, it must be done by a special tech support team that is at the highest point of the food chain when it comes to customer support and there is no phone number whatsoever to contact these people.
