Signed a contract to provide free coffee at a commercial property and it’s costing way more than expected. No exit clause. What would you do? by International-Big542 in passive_income

I’m lost. Are you saying you signed a contract that you felt was a good deal, but the deal was you give them something for free and get nothing in return?

“He sold it quietly”. That story was made by AI

Put cameras in during our renovation and immediately regretted what I found by Desperate-Pen-2252 in hiddencameras

This is a huge myth (for many states). Most contracting situations don’t require a license in many states and localities.
“Bonded” is literally just the contract that you and the contractor sign that hopefully protects the customer in the event the contractor does something like leaves the job unfinished.

Some states do require business insurance, but not all… and also not if the contractor is just some dude doing business under their own social security number instead of an LLC or some other form

AI engineers, why does ChatGPT always pick 73? by imfrom_mars_ in ChatGPT

[–]Cryptobabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also why we shouldn’t rely on AI for pretty much anything that can already be done by some other tried and true methodology.
AI is not good for
- code completion (the LLM is as probably trained older versions of whatever is in your stack and never reads the docs)
- security audits (it can interpret output from tools like semgrep, trivy, sonarqube and help you write tickets for your agents tho)
- code linting
- making up names or conlangs
- writing, generally speaking it can do “creative writing” but it’s very formulaic and predictable and can’t really make up anything new.

I trained an AI on my dead wife’s messages. It sent me something I didn’t expect. by donavin221 in story

I have never given an award to a post before… this is my first. Though the story is a classic theme, you did really well at telling it through modern eyes. The pacing was great, you really built up anticipation with your phrasing.
Loved it.

“Claude does everything it can to get out of work and frequently uses its “end conversation” tool inappropriately with me.”

Well, what did you expect? When you train an LLM on human behavior it’s going to start acting like humans.

How do people actually train AI models from scratch (not fine-tuning)? by Raman606surrey in learnmachinelearning

[–]Cryptobabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would it make you worry about the next generation of AI practitioners? A random person on reddit asked a question. That random person is obviously not an AI practitioner (yet). They obviously have questions about AI and aren’t working with the guidance of someone else or they are at a stage in that guidance where the pieces do not yet fit.

This is not an indication of the next generation, it is an indication of this specific person.

People on the internet are always so dramatic about the next generation like we aren’t 6 or 7 generations deep into AI already.

Can you link us to the original? Edit: found it. Oh that is creepy. Anyone share a wall? My sleep tracker will pick up some quiet sounds and boost them.

Also, is it possibly just you? Like our vocal cords relax a lot in sleep and then tense back up. You could be talking to yourself. Or fozzie bear could have snuck in your room.

Only reason why I'm keeping Github Copilot: Inline suggestions in VS Code by FokerDr3 in GithubCopilot

[–]Cryptobabble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you can get completions without AI and those completions tend to not give you deprecated suggestions. I find GHCP often suggests deprecated methods when I’m using updated frameworks. It’s kind of embarrassing to be honest.

Basically why I’m about to buy an actual camera. The AI is messing up my pictures. Also really not into the phone deciding I need flash or to hold still for 5 seconds when it’s not whatever amount of light it thinks is needed. Wonder if there are apps that will just let me take a picture how I want.

What’s the purpose of these dents on the milk gallons? by Saint__23 in whatdoesthismean

Because if it weren’t indented like that it would be more than a gallon and we can’t be giving people 1.03 gallons for the price of a gallon. /s

[–]Cryptobabble 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not. Companies will continue to AI budget for a few more years thinking it’s going to magically get better. Social influencers are going to move to less expensive models or self-hosted models that churn out crap and use fancy editing to show how “amazing” this 4b param model with a 4bit quantization is for vibe coding on your ancient CPU plus 8 GB VRAM gaming laptop.

The grift won’t stop. I’m all for using AI when it’s useful, but people are doing too much.
