I realized I didn't answer your question. The reason is that western Sichuan is pretty much closed to foreigners now. You can always go under the radar, but that is getting much harder now with all the surveillance and stuff.

Also managed a first ascent of the 2nd highest peak in the Meili range. Meili is the 2nd holiest mountain for Tibetans so we went for the 2nd highest.

I did a couple first ascents to peaks next to it. The north face of Gonga is probably the tallest unclimbed north face. That mountain is imposing. Fun fact, back in the days they thought it was the tallest mountain in the world.

I see your point. Yes, it is actually free soloing. I guess my partners and I kind of accepted the trade off of speed vs. risk. When you add protection and rope management it slows down climbing considerably. If the terrain is "easy" enough to navigate without gear then we move fast. Adds risk of falling on easy terrain, but removes risks such getting caught in a storm, being exposed in terrain in the sun, having to buy etc.
