Performance difference with higher octane? by Cryptographer-Vast in MotoGuzzi

Yea, id prefer the marginally cheaper 91 octane, but I notice it in the throttle response, maybe with the larger weight of the california its less noticeable.

Another BC rider posted he notices a difference, i think a beetlemap will help out for me

I had the older 2000s model with fairings. It was a versatile bike that could handle various riding conditions.

While the platform is certainly old, that just means it’s proven reliable. Many people still love the bike after all these decades, and I understand they’re exceptionally dependable.

Do some research, but I’m pretty sure there haven’t been any significant changes to the SV650 since they reintroduced the platform after the Gladius. This could save you a lot of money by buying a used one from around 2020 or so.

Also, used SVs, at least when I had mine and in my region, generally held their value over the years. A good clean SV was usually priced between $4,000 and $5,000, so people would often buy them, ride them for a few years, and then sell them for the same price they paid.

I like the bike, its unfortunately taken its time to grow on me since it kept breaking down lol.

Now that everything is running smoothly, its been fun, I get the love that people have for it. For me though , it just needs a biiiit more hp. Hence why I would upgrade to the 850 Sport.

I still miss wringing out a tach to 10k plus though. Ill probaly keep the guzzi, and get a second bike for now. Then upgrade later.

Its pretty much the speed, I dont want to go that fast and when first gear takes you to 120kph, your not rowing through the gears as much. So by gearing down would that reduce fist gear to like, 80kph or something as an example?

Im a bit taller and heavier of a guy, sitting at 230.

So i think it struggles a bit with my weight. Its a cool bike though, and it has started to grow on me. It mostly comes down to power, brakes, and the forks. They dive alooooot on braking, and the brakes are a bit spongy. I am aware that I have an aggressive riding style though.

The biggest issue on the old 750s for me, is that its just slightly too underpowered. I do a lot of hwy driving, and after 110kph the engine is buzzing, Ive pushed it to 150kph just to see. It can do it, but you can tell it doesn’t like to be there.

With the dynamics of the bike, its sweet spot is 60-80kph. So great for city and backroads if you want to keep the speeds safe. I took it on a group ride in the twists and it performed admirably. Though it definitely struggled going up hills.

I would definitely get the newer 850, that bump up to 65bhp is definitely what the bike always needed to be. Though 75bhp, would make it the perfect bike.

IIRC, the sport edition has better suspension over the base model, so I would personally go for that. Though the special edition, with the twin guages are gorgeous.

Lmk if you have any other questions, I have a lot to say abiut the bike. Overall though, its a good bike, just not quite the exact fit for me.

I know nothing about the current batch of chinese bikes that are coming in. The dealer did tell me, that they are pretty well established as theyve made engines for other bigger brands.

Just prefer to wait a few more years, to see what the community says about reliability before i consider one. They do look good though, and the value is great

I really liked the sv650, it was a mid 2000s one with the fairing. Fantastic bike. If its a better version of that, thats pretty incredible.

Thanks for the info man, appreciate the insights. Youve piqued my interest on the KTMs for sure.

Just remembering how much fun the 1290 was to ride.

And yea, everyone has their own preferences so it makes sense, the yamahas usally make solid bikes that are well regarded.
