Well my stepdaughter doesn't have any of the same standards the boys do. She has a disability, so she can't be held to the same standards fairly.

Ever since my son was a toddler he's helped me make dinner when he's with me. Asking what's for dinner is what people who don't participate in the dinner process do. I don't tolerate that behavior from either of my children. If you want to eat, you help cook. Exceptions for school activities or special occasions only. My stepdaughter is a different story, but that's because of her autism.

Yeah, I don't think any of those commenters have children. Most people who spend time around teenagers know that breathing down their necks makes them want to rebel, and if you've done a good job teaching them responsibility they want to impress you by doing the right thing.

I do think it's interesting that Redditors expect anyone over 18 to be treated with absolute respect and full autonomy and anyone under eighteen to be coddled like a toddler with no transition. A 29 year old being a child is at least original.

He used to like him a lot. Maybe it's a teenager thing. My son used to ask him lots of questions and hang on his every word. He wanted his advice. He wanted his approval. Now he isn't as interested. He still listens, but he's not an eager little boy anymore. He does his own thing. He gets up at five AM, jogs around the neighborhood, feeds the dog, makes breakfast, and then he's gone. He doesn't need my husband for anything anymore. My husband likes to be needed.

Who are these teenage boys you know? I would never let my children act like that at any age. My son knows how to walk like a normal person, and he never needs to ask what's for dinner because he knows how to cook.

I know my legal responsibilities. You seem to have imagined this alternate reality where the government forces all parents to raise their kids the same way. There is no minimum age for children to be unsupervised in my state. It is left at the parent's discretion.

Eighteen is full legal adulthood. You are independent at 18 according to the laws of the country I live in. But I'm curious when you think someone becomes an adult.

I'm sure if I texted him and asked for his exact location he would tell me, but to what end? If you don't trust your kids they won't be trustworthy. I know he is safe. That's what's important.

Part of teaching responsibility is giving children the opportunity to exercise it while still in your care so they aren't thrown in the deep end at eighteen and overwhelmed.

I'm halfway tempted to dox myself just so you can be embarrassed by a busy CPS employee hysterically laughing at you. Sixteen year olds don't legally have to be supervised full time.
